Is there any band/artist that can even hold a candle to Those Poor Bastards? Nothing I've encountered can compare.

Sometimes. But that dude gets a bit boring for me. I like my death country to be slightly more uptempo.

Their latest works are kinda weak compared to early ones.
Jay Munly for your question.
Sioux City Pete and the Beggars is pretty good

seasoned TPB listener here, i agree wholeheartedly, with the exception that 'Behold the Abyss' was their best album.

Dude. You just changed my life. It's a completely different ballgame than TPB, but goddamn.

I know them already. They're not bad, just slightly too Motorhead for my taste.

I dunno. I kind of liked their last two albums as well. All Dolled Up is a killer track. As is Mysterious Things.
The only 'Death Country' band I know is TPB. Too be honest i didn't even know that it was a genre. Tell me more about it and other bands in the genre.

I think tpb invented this tag for themselves.

I'm disappointed to see that there are no Nick Cave releases tagged as gothic country on that site. He was arguably the first performer in the genre.
