I Really enjoyed this whole album for like a 4th time listen through, with being alienated the first 3 times... the deluxe and the HQ quality will definitely make this album worth it.

Some good tracks here and there, but it's so feature-heavy, that it sounds like Damon phoned it in during his moments. Also the sudden transition from Hallelujah Money to We Got the Power is so jarring that it felt like the latter track was hastily written to leave listeners on a positive note, when Demon Days did the same thing but so much better.

Granted, I've only listened to it once but it feels kinda meh to me. I realize features have always been a thing with Gorillaz, but this album just had too many for me (they should be the side dish, not the main course IMO). The remixes just go to show how much better Plastic Beach and Humanz would've been if Damon enlisted a more competent producer.

How wrong can one opinion be?
Gorillaz haven't made an album that can be put up as best of all time but Plastic Beach was far more disorganized and loaded with forgettable filler than Demon Days. The high marks of Demon Days are beyond anything Plastic Beach came close to and the low marks on Demon Days are better than some of the better tracks on Plastic Beach.
It was a poorly produced, aimless mess. Up until Humanz, I agreed with the popular theory that the album got rushed and that's why the live sessions of the songs on PB were so superior. After the Stylo leak, supposedly, Gorillaz had to get the album out so it was somewhat unfinished.
They had as much time as they wanted for Humanz. This is what they came up with. I think Albarn needs to get back into the mindset of "I'm not good enough to do everything on my own" seeing as his solo album, the latest Blur, and now the last three Gorillaz albums are huge steps down. He needs a producer stopping him from this shit.

What the fuck happened in Albarn's life that caused this shift? Like, how? From the '90s through the 2000s he was just hitting so many peaks, 13, Gorillaz, Think Tank, Demon Days, The Good the Bad & the Queen, then just out of seemingly nowhere his entire style shifted and I cannot think of a bigger string of letdowns for me than Everyday Robots, Plastic Beach, the Magic Whip, and now Humanz.
Like, what? How? I was able to say "Everyday Robots isn't his best but it's fine" and "Plastic Beach was a step down but it's okay" but they keep getting worse.
And then in the middle of all this is DoYaThing which is up there amongst the best Gorillaz tracks and I think you may have nailed it, I think maybe James Murphy had a hand in keeping that good.

The dude's a notorious perfectionist, I think he got sick of having producers and label people and other musicians telling him how to do things or trying to add things. I'd guess that's why the features have gone down in quality, too, at least on Humanz (Plastic Beach maintained some of their best features and other than Mark E. Smith they usually didn't feel wasted).
I know there was in-fighting with The Magic Whip, I'm guessing Damon probably won more than he lost there and the album suffered for it.

Well Blur was a pop act. They have critical acclaim behind them but that was pop music. Then, with Graham pushing the way, they shifted into more artistically interesting stuff. Damon went off to do Gorillaz, which was straight up an attempt at moving into a different pop territory and it was wildly popular. Over time Damon got critical acclaim and the pop landscape changed. Demon Days was the last album he made where both the talents he truly thrives at aligned with pop music and he was able to be both wildly popular and artistically interesting.
Then he started doing operas. He's always been anti-pop, but he'd always been pop at the same time without wanting to embrace that. Then while he's doing operas and trying to be artsy pop keeps changing and when he came back for Plastic Beach he abandoned rock and wanted to do something more artistic, hence its acclaim. But it was still pop-oriented because that's just what he does.
As the pop landscape kept shifting, he wound up chasing after what the kids liked rather than going his own way and finding success, seeing as Plastic Beach wasn't as commercially big as his previous output.
Hence, Humanz is a bunch of mediocre, forgettable dance pop songs with no soul behind them manufactured to try and follow the trends in pop music right now.

That's my two cents. It's like Bowie's 80s output. Once he stopped being a leader in pop, he had to choose between his art and his popularity and he went with popularity.

previously, i felt like the album was sort of split up between the first half which was mostly upbeat tracks, and the second half which was mostly dark tracks, and then suddenly ending with we got the power which just made no fucking sense and felt completely dissonant with the flow of the album.

I just listened to the full album of Humanz and I have to say I'm disappointed. It's not because the music is necessarily bad, the album lacks the finesse early Gorillaz had.

See, I loved Demon Days straight away, Gorillaz I grew to appreciate more as I got more into post-punk and hip hop music, but Plastic Beach was one where I thought it was pretty good and the more I listened to it the more it fell apart and I realized it was really shitty.
Humanz is just immediately obviously bad.
