The biggest problem with pop since around 1968 is the way that radical and strange music of the past has been normalized as the inevitable, natural step to have taken, while anything that leads forward is demonized. Elvis was incredibly strange to those people. Lots of people, many of them not even that old, thought he was awful, unmusical, a joke, and to some extent a dangerous one. A lot of the mockery was defensive, but some people never came to terms with him musically either.
