All music is from the past unless it's live.
Some of the artists are just dead and some are still alive and touring. Really unless you see bands live it should make no difference to you. It sucks loving bands that you can never see live, but at least you have their recordings.

Obviously, I mean to say I struggle a lot to find contemporary music I like although I'm sure there must be something out there. The most recent music I like is some early 90s electronic and ambient.

On the plus side I actually have seen 2/5 of those I posted live (Bob Dylan and Leo Kottke) and I saw David Gilmour live as well, covered a lot of Pink Floyd material.
