It was a message that said fuck you to his record label.

Then why did he make a band later on to play it live?

Jesus the level of pleb on this board.

MMM is babby's first harsh noise record and easily accessible. No, it wasn't a "fuck you" to the record company, it was a childish attempt at making harsh noise, but turned out to be nothing more than industrial pop. If this album is difficult for you, you should probably go back to the top 40 radio stations and nu-folk "feels" music that your infantile ear craves.

It's a bad noise album, especially so for people new to the genre

reminder that John Cale and Sterling Morrison were recording stuff like this while still in the Velvet Underground:

while Lou might have released MMM due to contractual obligations, I think it's very likely that he had an affection for drone-y music and recorded MMM earnestly

Metal Machine Music [RCA Victor, 1975]
Lou's answer to Environments has certainly raised consciousness in both the journalistic and business communities. Though it is a blatant rip-off, it is not--philistine cavils to the contrary--totally unlistenable. But for white noise I'll still take "Sister Ray." C+

I think he recorded it earnestly and also knew that the reception, critically and commercially, would be mostly negative.

Lester Bangs had some pretty funny things to say about it:

>If you ever thought feedback was the best thing that ever happened to the guitar, well, Lou just got rid of the guitars.

>In his excellent liner notes, Lou asserts that he and the other speedfreaks did not start World Wars I, II, "or the Bay of Pigs, for that matter." And he's right. If everybody took amphetamines, all the time, everybody would understand each other. Either that or never listen or bother with the other son of a bitch, because they'd all be too busy spending three days drawing psychedelic lines around a piece of steno paper until it's totally black, writing eighty-page letters about meaningless occurrences to their mothers, or creating MMM. There would be no more wars, and peace and harmony would reign. Just imagine Gerald Ford on speed- he might manifest some glimmer of personality. Or Ronald Reagan- a blood vessel in his snapping-turtle lips would immediately burst, perhaps ridding us of that cocksucker. As is well known by now, JFK enjoyed regular injections of Meth and vitamins from happy croakers. 'Nuff said. Hey may not have actually accomplished anything (except the Bay of Pigs- wait a minute, Lou hasn't been doing his homework), but he had style and a winning smile.

Also,

>In an interview with rock journalist Lester Bangs, Reed claimed that he had intentionally placed sonic allusions to classical works such as Beethoven's Eroica and Pastoral Symphonies in the distortion, and that he had attempted to have the album released on RCA's Red Seal classical label; it is not clear if he was being serious, although he repeated the latter claim in a 2007 interview.[6]
>>
>>72385876

the consensus opinion will always be either: A. he did it for drug money, or B. he had too much drug money

what is Environments?
