this is a shit-tier contrarian list... the point of a Big Four list is that each artist is BIG, so Doom is automatically out. BIG implies sales and popularity

the top four high-selling rappers are: eminem, kanye west, jay z and lil wayne in that order.

this isn't a list on YOUR opinion

objectively the BIG FOUR of rap are:

Eminem
Kanye West
Jay Z
Lil Wayne

these are the biggest names in the genre. Period. I don't even like 75% of that list, but my opinion is not valid here.

>>
>>72373476
I'll add that the fifth high selling rapper is technically Flo Rida

so in terms of popularity

Eminem
Kanye
Jay Z
Wayne
Flo Rida

are the worlds most popular rappers of all time

nobody would say these are the five BEST rappers or the five CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED artist, but there is a strong case that these are the five BIGGEST names of the genre all time.

The big 3 are:
Bowie
T Rex
Roxy Music

and if you're even going to include a fourth (and probably you shouldn't) it should be Sweet. New York Dolls weren't even into the theatrics and cabaret-influences that was so important to the genre-defining glam rock artists. They were proto-punk!

You picked a hard-ass genre my man.

Bob Dylan
Joni Mitchell
Billy Joel
Elton John

No Faithless?? You're doing it wrong.
I don't think Sneaker PImps deserve to be on there either. They only had one really stellar trip-hop album.
>>
>>72374045

I'd say that's characteristic of trip hop in general as it usually draws from an eclectic blend of styles. I wouldn't call Gorillaz that much more all over the place than Cibo Matto or even Garbage, and the latter merely adopted trip hop into their brand of alt rock.

Honestly, I'm not sure if anyone could narrow down" definitive artists of rap" to just four. Biggie and 2pac on the same list seems redundant to me, but if you choose one or the other a shitstorm will brew.
>>72373217
I'd like to replace Weezer or Cheap Trick with the New Pornographers, but I suppose they're not nearly as big.
>>72373242
plenty of other artists mix genres on the reg

Good choices but 'noise rock' is a pretty broad category. SY definitely belongs, though.

seems about right

this list includes the only three "britpop" groups anyone really cares about so yeah
>>72373309
is "pop rock" really a genre? you could include any rock band that has enjoyed a lot of mainstream success, in which case the beatles definitely belong at the top

This depends on whether or not we include neo-psych. Regardless, Floyd was only psych for their first few albums, and most of the Doors' material wasn't overtly psychedelic.
>>72373706
What about the Byrds? Basically created the whole jangle pop sound, and did it better than almost any of their followers.
>>72373752
Swap CD and SoM with Banshees and Joy Division (nobody ever calls them "goth rock" but if they'd worn more makeup they'd be regarded as the quintessential goth group)
>>72373801
All good choices but Wire should be at the top.
>>72373853
Perfect list - these are absolutely the four most important immediate influences on punk rock.
>>72373910
I'd offer Pavement only because they're usually labelled 'lo-fi' - but IMO only their debut sounds 'lo-fi', their other albums have great production value. Mountain Goats would also be a strong contender.

>>72374050
indie rock is also not specific enough
>>72374073
Same as above, "singer-songwriter" isn't even a genre. I get what you mean, though - folk-rock-ish poet-singers and whatnot, in which case Joni Mitchell belongs on this list.
>>72374206
No Wave could basically just be a 'big three' with Branca, SY, and Swans
>>72374369
Jazz and folk are way too broad, although if your folk list was changed to "folksy 70's singer-songwriters" I'd agree wholeheartedly. Calling Animal Collective 'folk' in any ways is absolutely ridiculous, and Wilco is also a real stretch. Seconding the opinion that it's not a proper new wave list without Talking Heads.
>>72374380
Needs Neko Case and Lambchop. Maybe Wilco, too.
>>72374640
I like this better but still needs Talking Heads, and I'd definitely put XTC ahead of the Cars or Devo.

Just because something is "rooted in folk" doesn't classify it as folk music. I understand what you're trying to say about animal collective but, at least in terms of my definition of "big", they don't deserve to be there. They are not influential in that genre nor do they exemplify it. Folk and contemporary folk are just too broad anyway.

Yes they are both duos but they are different

It would be hard for me to include a group with such a limited discography. I think Outkast is a given, Mobb Deep is a tier below but still a solid representation, and then after that you'd choose your two out of Run The Jewels, Clipse, UGK, or 8ball & MJG.
