Trent's life story is genuinelly motivating, no memes.

Seeing Trent now, releasing Not The Actual Events and Hesitation Marks, personally I consider those being one of his best albums, for him to release those so late into his career while having such high quality is impressive and satisfying to see, a true victory of a man.

One thing that is overlooked nowadays (more since his passing) is that David Bowie was shit on the 90s (nobody really cared about him anymore) and he jumpwagon on the Reznor/Manson wave.
Bowie had a pretty good eye to tell where "new" things were happening.

I'm not talking about the quality of his works, I'm talking about the general consensus within the music industry and with the audience. Thee were a lot of venue changes due to low tickets sale and, in general, on the music press his releases were poorly recieved and had either low o mixed reviews.
The tour/collaboration with NIN and working with Floria Sigismondi helped him gain MTV time and the appeal to younger generations and music critics.
I am not flaming, it's just history. Of course I enjoy those releases but it' stupid changing facts just because.

The musicians and producers involved can't have the same mindset so it'll always end up being weak.

All of Hesitation Marks was one big message to his fans about how the old Trent isn't there anymore, and in fact it was never really there to begin with.
It was a fictional character created by a combination of drugs, depression, and becoming what he thought his fanbase wanted from him.

That's me, but at the same time that's most of the NIN fanbase.
Almost every single (moderately obsessed) NIN fan is "that guy" that spends a disturbing amount of time on the ninwiki cross checking shit to make sure it's right and is constantly looking for that one alternate version of that one track and likes Trent a shit ton and wishes him to be happy but at the same time really wants Trent to finally die at some point so we can finally get all those alternate/cut/demo versions of tracks Trent refuses to release in any form since he's such a stubborn perfectionist, so the only way we'll ever get to listen to even half of it is post-mortem.
Sounds grim and even disrespectful, but at the same time it's true.

By the way, talking about versions of tracks that Trent will never, ever fucking release even tho they're all perfectly, fully recorded and stored somewhere.

I think they're from the Live With Teeth Tour Rehearsals and Live Tension Tour Rehershals or something like that.

Yeah, they do seem like that, personally, I am not a fan of the Tension rehearsals for whatever reason, they do not go all out as they did on the actual tour.

The art is referencing prototypes that were meant to be for With Teeth.
You know how TDS has a "dirt, metal and insects" aestetic and The Fragile has a naturalist aestetic with extreme close ups of plants etc?
With Teeth main thing was supposed to be fucked up text repeated.

It's actually a motif that sorta started immediately after The Fragile with the title of Still, if you remember.
It was supposed to then transition into With Teeth with this repeating text shit and printer smears, that kinda thing.
However it wasn't meant to be and instead we got the "semi glitchy art" motif for With Teeth that was, in my opinion, much more boring to look at.

I don't know if this means anything moving fowards in terms of aestetics, but there you have it.

I don't think it's correct to say that there's a "divide" between the two, it's more like Manson never got out of his JUST phase and kept constantly talking shit and doing stupid things while Trent was trying to live his life.

It's like being at school and there's this weird goth kid sitting next to you, you hang out with him for a couple of years but eventually he starts spreading rumors about you while at the same time self harming and calling you in the middle of the night crying for your attention, while you've got family problems at home and need to focus on more important shit.
You don't exactly hate him, you simply don't want to get involved in his stupid shenanigans when you've got actual real life shit to deal with.
Now you're all grown up and have a wife and a kid and the weird goth dude still posts edgy selfies of himself of facebook and keeps messaging you hoping for a response acting like the myspace era never ended for him.
It's like, how the fuck do you even handle such a person anymore at this point?
You don't, you just detach yourself from him because he's a lost cause.

Maybe once in a while you open up your drawer, watch old photos and think back about the wild freaky parties you two used to have, and it reminds you of your youth, but at the same time it also reminds you of all the fucked up shit you were going trough at the time, all the drugs and the downward spiral of self destruction.
So you lock the drawer back up and move on.

This thread has caused me to get into NIN/Trent Resnor again since I last listened to some singles years ago in middle school lol. Giving PHM my first listen right now.

It's also making me want to just say fuck off to my insecurities and pessimism about making creative music, because while I'm going through the depressing university grind I feel like making music might be the only thing that'll make me truly happy.
