Joshua Tree 30th anniversary edition.

Who's going to this tour? What would you like to see on the setlist? Also the 2017 mix of Red Hill Mining Town is out now, for anyone who's interested.

U2 are one of the most critically acclaimed and popular bands of all time and were defining artists of the 1980s and 1990s (both in the college rock/post-punk scene and then in the mainstream). Just because you have no knowledge of them beyond the iTunes thing and "Vertigo" doesn't make this any less true.

It was actually acceptable to proclaim a like for their early stuff up until about 2012-ish and then the tide shifted. The itunes bullshit only cemented that (not to mention the new era of /mu/ posters who hadn't been exposed to anything outside 00s era U2/Bono being in the public eye)

>>
>>72340851
Pop is a rushed album and has fair-good songs
>>
>>72340879
and a couple absolute shit ones

It honestly could have been great, but they didn't know what direction they really wanted to take it and ran out of time to finish writing. It was like October all over again. This phenomenon would also resurface during the recording of No Line on the Horizon
>>
>>72340879
Yeah I know is their most rushed album and unproduced but with 3 zooropa demos being in actual songs is great also during promo tour and proper popmart they improves their songs
>>72333243
like gone and others.
I thinkg the playboy mansion and maybe miami are the worst songs from that album, even liking a little miami in my case.
>>
>>72340922
>I thinkg the playboy mansion and maybe miami are the worst songs from that album, even liking a little miami in my case.

Yeah those were all pretty poor. Though they did get better during the tour.

It's a shame that they could do tracks like Lemon and Zooropa and then Hold Me... and Miss Sarajevo and Your Blue Room, but by POP they had ridiculous writer's block.

Not to mention the album was doomed from the start in America thanks to Discotheque and it's video. The Popmart tour was even more lost on the public. Check out 1:10 of this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHOP5Iig-yQ

Literally >15,000 people in a 50,000 capacity stadium that they could have two sold out nights at during ZooTV. That's how much of a flop it was...
>>
>>72340974
And this is why you don't make tour dates before the album is complete
>>
>>72340974
Well, I know about that poor tour debut but in Europe and Latin america they did a little better.

Yeah is a shame they don't use more OST1 they only use Miss sarajevo in 360 tour

About that album I want to buy it, is the only one missing in my collection

what a excelsior album, I know larry hate it.
>>
>>72340851
Pop is why U2 plays it safe with soft rock now
>>
>>72341008
Pretty much. ZooTV didn't even start until like 4 months after Achtung came out.

>>72341010
Yeah, their Latin America shows were all pretty much sold out since I don't think they had ever toured there before. And the European shows were also mostly sellouts (with the exception of a few shows in Germany). In fact, they played their biggest concert of all time on that tour. 150,000 fans attended a September 20th show in Italy.

Passengers is certainly an interesting album to have. Larry does hate it, but he was never as interested in U2's experimental phase.

Nah, missed out on this one
Songs of Experience and accompanying tour when?

Also, Zooropa is their most underrated album. They could've continued down that route instead of playing it safe this century and they'd be indisputably one of the GOAT.
>>
>>72341037
Yeah I know, but it wasn't that bad, maybe public and critics were wrong even being a rushed album is better than ATYCLB and HTDAAB.

>>72341056
about recordings popmart in Leeds is pretty good and good quality audio.

And as I pointed before:
>Bono and the Edge had written a few songs before recording started for Pop in earnest. "If You Wear That Velvet Dress", "Wake Up Dead Man", "Last Night on Earth" and "If God Will Send His Angels" were originally conceived during the Zooropa sessions. "Mofo" and "Staring at the Sun" were also partly written already.

the good ones comes from Zooropa sessions.
I also love this one:

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - U2
like glam electronic rock
>>
>>72341084
>They could've continued down that route instead of playing it safe this century and they'd be indisputably one of the GOAT.
They would have but:
>>72341037

It was all fine and dandy when they did whatever they wanted and still had hit singles and best selling albums and critical acclaim, but after POP they became as calculated as possible. Each song seemingly written with the intention of being a purposeful radio hit, of being able to be easily sung along to by 80,000 fans. They became honestly just somewhat toothless. The media/critics, general public, and many longtime fans loved ATYCLB and HTDAAB (to a slightly lesser extent) when they were released because it was a "return to form", but honestly those records don't hold up at all.
>>
>>72341093
Were there anymore Zooropa/Passengers outtakes that haven't seen the light of day? I'd kill for those.
>>
>>72341146
Sadly no, as far I can know zooropa demos and pop demos never were into light.

Only achtung baby outtakes, there are several like 10cds most of them larry sessions on drums and the edge doing stuff

For me Zooropa hasn't got any bad song I rellay enjoy all of them

>>72341132
for me ATYCLB doesn't work as album but has some great songs and HTDAAB work as album but their song even being a little bit better thatn ATYCLB you can't get hoo up in them maybe Yahweh, miracle drug. Even vertigo demo's "native son" is far better thatn proper vertigo.
>>
>>72341132
except all that you cant leave behind is still gr8
>>
>>72341146
Who knows. Bono claims that there's hundreds of songs that don't make it. Reminds me when the edge was interviewed a few years ago and said that they had a whole bunch of songs that they didn't release because "it didn't sound like U2". Really pissed me off
>>
>>72341224
kite, in a little while and new york tour version are the best songs from that album and maybe wild honey, walk on, stuck in a moment and elevation, also beautiful day is really powerful.

As I said in another thread, t's a shame because they made some really fantastic music early in their career but most people won't even bother with it because of more recent Bono fuckery and Vertigo and the iTunes album thing.

Hell, I had a conversation with my roommate the other night when With or Without You came on shuffle on his pandora playlist and he said "This is pretty good. Too bad it's U2" and then skipped it.

Of course, I did play him New Year's Day later and he said "Oh, I forgot this was U2. I like this one". He also liked the atmospherics and guitar ambience in the song The Unforgettable Fire.
>>
>>72341353
Yeah, the unforgettalbe fire is their more raw album for me and I love that vibe.

Also, no line in the horizon and song of innoncence are better albums than the two previous one by a mile or two
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VFQ-UNkh3A
>>
>>72341394
No Line could have been a top-tier U2 album if they followed through with the music they had made in Morrocco with Eno instead of scrapping most of it and trying to build admittedly good, but not amazing, U2-by-numbers anthems around that material.

That and then forcing in 3 throwaway pop songs in the middle for "hit single" material only made things worse.

I haven't actually listened to Songs of Innocence to be quite honest.
>>
>>72341204
>Only achtung baby outtakes, there are several like 10cds most of them larry sessions on drums and the edge doing stuff

Weren't those the early Hansa studios sessions where somebody found 8 hours of scrapped demos in a dumpster and then pressed them into a bootleg?
>>
>>72341225
>said that they had a whole bunch of songs that they didn't release because "it didn't sound like U2". Really pissed me of

For fuck's sake. Literally modern U2 is only good when they aren't trying to force themselves to be the band casuals want them to be.
