For all the critical worship bestowed on them, punk bands accounted for a rather tiny amount of rock album sales back then. The average teenager's record shelf in 1978 was much more likely to have KISS, Styx, Rush, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, etc on it.

That came out in 79, not 78. It got a positive critical reception and did quite well in the US, hitting #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was less successful in Harrison's home market where punk/New Wave worship was at its greatest.

Brits have always had more "out there" tastes than Americans. A lot of New Wave groups like Devo and Blondie did better there than here. Not The Cars though; the British never really went for them.

The whole Airplane crew completely lost it as soon as the counterculture era was over. Even the handful of decent singles they put out after 1970 seem like an anticlimax, and they're never played anymore, you only still hear Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. I guess Grace and Co. were just too rooted in the acid/Haight-Ashbury days to survive.

I've never liked Jefferson Airplane desu. They had some first-rate musicians, but their lyrics always felt uninformed, preachy, and over-the-top. A lot of my parents' generation picked up some pretty stupid/destructive ideas from them, and their music has aged like dirt.

That leaves Jefferson Starship, who did some fine pop hits in the late 70's, the underrated Blows Against the Empire, and a trio of superb melodic rock efforts once Mickey Thomas joined (prior to the Starship years). So I'll go with them.
>>
>>72316976
White Rabbit is still pretty cool tho.
>>
>>72316976
>>72316081
IIRC a lot of Starship's songs were written by professional song doctors, not the band members.

I agree that Airplane are very overrated and their political songs were cringeworthy. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit were good songs which is why they're still played today. Other than that, the band had all the subtly of a sledgehammer.

Not 80s Starship though. Their master tapes should all be burned, and anyone who likes them should be stripped naked, chained to a lamppost, and be forced to listen to Coldplay on repeat for three days.

Starship aren't in the same league as the band's earlier incarnations...but for 80s radio rock, they're honestly not bad.

The only thing I can say about Starship is that Knee Deep in the Hoopla showcases all the worst aspects of the 80s on a single album.

See, I don't agree. I don't hate KDITH and while it may have not aged well, Jefferson Airplane aged 1000x worse (for that matter, almost all 60s psych rock has aged horribly), from the gibberish they wrote while tripping balls to the cringe-inducing political songs that became dated in 5 seconds. Honestly, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit are the only reason anyone still talks about Airplane today.
>>
>>72317519
All music becomes dated and sounds like its time, kiddo, even Beethoven.
>>
>>72317559
There's dated, and then there's Dated with a capital D. For example, The Cars S/T still sounds good today even with the obviously late 70s production. Surrealistic Pillow and Volunteers do not sound good today. Why would anyone in 2017 want to hear a bunch of acidheads complaining about the Vietnam War?
>>
>>72315163

>>
I personally don't find Starship worse than Journey, Foreigner, or any other corporate rock of that time.
>>
>>72317700
I'm of the opinion that Starship were decent by 80s radio rock standards and don't deserve most of the hate thrown at them, but still, We Built This City is beyond defending.

I'm older than a lot of /mu/, so I remember how difficult it was to find information on artists/albums before the Internet was a thing. You didn't have a lot to go by except the professional critics like Christgau and publications like Rolling Stone Mag. I seriously believed all the hype I read (no doubt written by nostalgic aging hippies) about how awesome that Jefferson Airplane were, and when I went out and got a copy of SP, I was all like wtf this is terrible.
>>
>>72317700

Mickey Thomas was a terrifyingly good singer, and still actually sounds pretty great well into his '60s.

Grace Slick has disowned those 80s albums anyway, saying they were meaningless junk and she'd mentally checked out by that point and was just in it for the money.
>>
I wanted to like Airplane during my foray into psych rock, but I found myself more respecting than enjoying the 60s San Francisco scene, and desu the British bands from that time were a lot better.
>>
Airplane have aged like dirt, I'm not denying this. But put in the context of the late 60s, they were a force to be reckoned with, had some interesting songwriting ideas, excellent musicianship, phenomenal live shows, and along with the Grateful Dead strode over the 60s San Fran scene like a colossus. The post-1974 incarnations of the band and especially 80s Starship are just another cheap, manufactured corporate rock group like Journey or Styx.
