On first pass this is the worst Gorillaz album. Worse than The Fall. Maybe it will grow on me. Just seems like it's not very cohesive, and most of the good songs came out before the album were released. Because there are some good tracks on it. Hallelujah Money is one of my new favorites. Busted & Blue feels like it belongs on Demon Days. I kind of like Let Me Out, even though it's kind of generic. We Got The Power is just fucking terrible. Interlude: Non-Conformist Oath is just fucking cringey, even though it's not a song.

I just feel like there's not a lot on here, that's wasn't released as a single to tease the album. She's My Collar is alright, I guess? Strobelight wasn't terrible? I don't know. Maybe it needs time to grow, but a lot of the album feels like filler.

Ugh, I don't want to compare it to Plastic Beach, but like it's similar in the fact that most of the songs aren't really Albarn lead. But like Plastic Beach had an interesting sound and everything seemed unique, yet cohesive. This just all sounds like generic brandless fucking garbage, aside from like Hallelujah Money. Not a huge fan.

I feel like I just listened to an album of DAREs and I don't like DARE. Also nowhere near enough Damon, which sucks because he does fine in the roughly 5 minutes he gets on this damn thing. And to top it off I don't give a fuck about pretty much any of these features save Jehnny Beth and she feels kind of wasted on We Got The Power. Even the requisite De La Soul track was flimsy. I don't know who this album is for but it's not for me.

I didn't dislike none of the tracks, but i think that we got the power is weak.


The problem is that it don't feel like a gorillaz album. Really, sometimes i just want to listen Damon/2-D voice singing, not some artist that i don't even know. But the sound of the album is good, this sad dance vibe is great etc.

Self Titled is still their best. I don't like Demon Days. Plastic Beach is Good, so is The Fall.

I mean to each their own. I'd be willing to bet that I'm about as old as the average Gorillaz listener, and I discovered them later. Demon Days (before Humanz) was easily one of my least favorite of the main albums, and everyone wants to suck that album's cock. None of the songs on it stick with me, except Feel Good, which is probably why it was overplayed as fuck.

Plastic Beach had a different sound to it than their previous two. It was notably more pop, and had way more guest artists, but it had far more memorable songs than DD.

Exactly. When Painting With came out people nearly immediately knew whether they loved it or hated it. I loved it even when the 192 kb release came out and the low end and higher end parts were missing. The song writing and arrangement spoke to me immensely. All of these minute aspects and frequencies add a bit of flavor to the overall tone of the tracks but they don't drastically change the delivery or reception of the album to a point where it's going to greatly influence a rating.

The best thing this album has going for it, is it transitions cleanly from track to track. Literally all of the best songs were released as singles. The rest is filler as hell, every feature on this has performed subpar and severely let me down. Danny Brown and De La Soul especially. Vince Staples verses on Ascension, while I disagree with the overall message, are about the only redeeming aspects of this album, along with the other singles. Everything else feels derivative and uninspired.

Both are fine tracks. Hallelujah Money is an acquired taste. Easily one of the best Gorillaz songs. Not commercial enough to be a leading single, but one of my faves as well.

I don't fucking understand why everyone is shitting on this album this much. It's a perfectly listenable album from start to finish. Even the singles grew on me.

I only think I legitimately dislike about the album is the lack of Damon in terms of vocals. I would prefer if the features didn't basically take over the album, but the actual execution isn't bad at all.

I must say It's much better than I would have thought. The production is still pretty interesting and different from each Gorillaz Album, and some songs have really good hooks (Strobelite and Momentz for example).

It has less of a cohesion and more of mix of good songs than DD and PB, but it still flows and grooves. Wasn't expecting some deep shit anyway from the album.

So yeah, not bad really.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I liked most of the tracks on except Momentz, Busted and Blue felt like filler, and all the interludes didn't feel necessary. Strobelight, She's My Collar, Let Me Out, and Submission are all good tracks. I also enjoyed all the singles. Right now I'm gonna rank this higher than Plastic Beach. But none of the songs come close to tracks like Empire Antz or On Melancholy Hill.

Strobelite would be 10/10 if Damon sang the hook. The lack of him vocally is really my only complaint so far. I love the dark party vibe and the production is interesting. The songs are poppy but unique in that classic gorillaz way. 8/10 for me.

A lot of the songs are actually pretty good, but there isn't any sort of unified feeling like every album in the past.

Just finished my whole listen.

The only worthwhile song was Andromeda, my only complaint about it is that it was mostly beat and lyric, not much in terms of instrumental.

Everything else just sounded like banger rap dogshit with Albarn kind of murmuring in the background or stupid pop shit. In both cases, Albarn is the primary vocal feature on maybe two or three of the songs? And on the rest he was just muted and edited to sound like he was on a fucking intercom. Imagine cucking your way out of your own fucking album, what a fucking mess. I'm really upset considering Gorillaz really appealed to me with nearly every album they put out, The Fall was the first album that I just couldn't enjoy and I guess it was the beginning of the end.

2/10 is what I give it, over saturation of feature artists/lack of the actual lead singer's vocals along with a lack of a coherent sound for the entirety of the album really make it terrible, or maybe the whole album being terrible is where it IS coherent.

Saturnz Barz, Strobelite, Submission, Let Me Out, Andromedia, and She's My Collar are all great imo. Not sure of my least favourite, probably Charger, but need to listen a few more times. Overall it's decent, it's not like Demon Days and Gorillaz where every song is enjoyable, but it definitely has some good tracks. My main critique is not enough Damon, also it's not the smoothest or most consistent of records. Some songs I really don't like.

But the fact that there were hidden gems in there like Mementos, She's My Collar, and Submission makes up for that in my book.

After first listening of the already released tracks i was like:

Then came Let it Out and i was:

Now after two listens of the full album i think it is a strong 6, the best tracks were released before everything else, and the interludes don't really help. The album seems to be all over the place, kind of a party album or something like that. Really liked the themes and atmosphere of Plastic Beach and The Fall, in Humanz they blow it all to the skies for more pop appeal and catchiness with really rare exceptions. I feel that those decisions will considerably shorten the lifetime of this for me.

Too many guests, good tracks released before the rest, few 2D moments (they were all good) and too much bad singers with auto tune or/and misplaced in the song, instrumentals are pretty good.

After first listen, absolutely heartbroken how meh this album is. ~17 minutes are good or great, ~17 are boring or bad. So middle-of-the-road quality wise that I'm surprised it came out like this. Hopefully all the bonus tracks will allow us to make a great album on our own.

Biggest gripes are the juxtaposition of sonically fun songs with boring-ass dredges...how does a creator think one is great as well as the other?

Rating 1-10 in the context of Gorillaz, 10 doesn't mean perfection.

Also warning, I'm a huge fanboy and it's going to show.

1. Ascension: 6. Really grows on you, but I can't see past the shitty lyrics.

2. Strobelite: 9.5. I miss 2D, and I don't think it experiments enough, but it's still fucking amazing.

3. Saturnz Barz: 8.5. I hated this track initially but like with Rhinestone Eyes once you realize the vocals are just another instrument it stops bothering you.

4. Momentz: 9. Self-Titled material, in a good way. I hate the female vocals though, kinda stop this from being a 10, and the end isn't very good.

5. Submission: 7. I feel like the entire track is waiting for Brown to come, but then Brown doesn't deliver. It sounds good, but it doesn't fit the set-up. Still fun to listen to, but disappointing.

6. Charger: ?. There is no good leak of this song, but the first half is a 10 judging from the leak.

7. Andromeda: 8. Not much to say. I think other Gorillaz tracks do a better job at this kind of song.

Thinking maybe not worth $100+ for a concert of this shit.

Just bought my tickets, got good seats for 50 bucks. Do they play older stuff when they tour or do they just stick to the current album? I'm fine with either, just curious

Depends on the tour. Last ones I saw were specifically for albums. I'd assume it'd be a nearly complete set of Humanz and a few older tracks here and there.

listened to it through for the first time last night and was definitely underwhelmed
like many others ITT, the static and poor mastering was a major distracting force
the features were either poorly utilized (Grace Jones, Danny Brown, Kali Uchis, De La) or completely unnecessary (Pusha T, Jenny Beth)
listened to it a second time through this morning and like it a bit more, but still not in love with it
Looking forward to hearing the CDQ

Honestly liked this more than Demon Days. Maybe I need to relisten that and then get to other albums, but currently my opinion persists.
