This isn't suppose to be a loaded or bating question. I just want /mu/ thoughts on this.
>>
>>72307365
It will never be as rounded as Illmatic
>>
It's up there
>>
>>72307520
overrated fucking album kys
>>
>>72307365
It's garbage
This isn't supposed to be a loaded or baiting answer. I just say my thoughts on this.
>>
>>72307520
I took another listen to Illmatic the other day and it dawned on me that it isn't that great. It's very straightforward and unambitious, and its quality comes from the sheer tightness of the beats and Nas' great delivery. TPAB is, by contrast, extremely varied, but there's just something about it that doesn't make it the GOAT.

The crown for 'greatest hip-hop album of all time' hasn't been worn yet, and it may never be
>>
>>72307553
Oh no someone has a different opinion than me and told me to kill myself brb killing self
>>
>>72307553
And TPAB isn't? Please actually die.
>>
>>72307565
Enter the 36 Chambers I think covers the the ambitiousness and tightness that the GOAT needs. It takes the cake over both IMO.
>>
I think it's Blackstar, but that might be a generational thing cuz you had all this gangster rap happening, Tupac and Biggie had died, and then Blackstar came out with this fresh sound and lyrics like "too much violence in hip hop"
>>
kendrick sucks
his best album was gkmc and that's like 7/10 at best
>>
>>72307365
It's not even close. I can never sit through this album from front to back cause it's all over the place and tried way too hard. An exhausting listen.
>>
>>72307955
weak
>>
>>72308053
Yea it is
>>
>>72307955

>>
>>72307365
It's my fav hip-hop of all time, yes
>>
It is an entertaining album. You'll find something interesting from each listen. E.g. there are no any 4 bars measure has the same instrumentation in "wesley theory". It was that detailed! IMO best album of the decade.

*cough*

Liquid swords imho
>>
it's definitely the most ambitious hip hop album and Kendrick manages it incredibly well. The concept is also very fleshed out and permeates every single aspect, including instrumentation. It's not my favourite hip hop album, nor is it my favourite Kendrick, but I see it as his best work purely in terms of its writing and how well he manages to piece everything together. The only weakness is that the ending interview has no replay value, but it's at the very end so you can just skip it, so it doesnt really bother me that much actually.

Buhloone Mindstate is the better jazz rap album
>>
>>72307365
this is better tho
>>
>>72307365
It's a good album, a definite contender for the greatest, but it's definitely far from perfect.

There are many songs that don't stand on their own, especially in the second half (basically anything besides How Much A Dollar Cost, Complexion and The Blacker The Berry). A very enjoyable and "full" listen, but song-by-song both DAMN. and GKMC are much easier to listen to.

Yes

>>
>>72307365
It's a tie between kendrick's Good Kid M.a.a.d. city and Kanye's MBDTF for me.
>>
>>72309007

It's funny how people pretend they know anything about hiphop and at the same time manage to ignore or downplay the quality, status and sheer impact of MBDTF.

Yes Kanye is a retard now, and yes, he is not a fantastic lyricist, but that album is still widely regarded as one of the best rap albums of all time.
>>
>>72309075
you're widely regarded as a buffoon
>>
>>72308971
Hood Politics is probably the most boring and uninspired track on the album, I'm sorry. Especially with the annoying kid voice Kenny does.
i is very good, but it's elevated so much higher in the context of the album, but ok, I guess you can count it in.
Mortal Man is basically its hook repeated 4 times, followed by two cool poems and really corny (yes, it's corny, admit it finally) Tupac interview tie-in. The most overrated song on the whole album imo.
>>
>>72309007
>>72309098
nice r.eddit formatting retard
>>
>>72309127
mortal man is objectively the best song on the album if you disregard the fact that there's a Tupac interview where pac spews retarded bullshit

If we were talking any hip-hop ever it'd have to be It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back or Paul's Boutique

Hip-hop is at it's best when utilizing sampled sound collage with raw ghetto inspiration.

In no particular order, these are the 5 best hip-hop albums I've ever heard, and I've heard a ridiculous amount of hip-hop so don't give me any shit.

To Pimp a Butterfly
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Illmatic
36 Chambers
Paul's Boutique

This is such a stupid meme. Butterfly was universally acclaimed and most people don't know Fantano exists. If Fantano's opinion is canon law than why is MBDTF (which he gave a 6) tier 1 /mu/core?

Now fuck off
>>
>>72309127
I love Hood Politics. Not because it's a good song (it's like a 7 or something) but because he says BOO BOO a whole bunch ahahaha
>>
>>72311320
lmao that guy was high as balls when he wrote this
>>
>>72311396
this doesnt include the rest of the world, just /mu/ who takes everything he says to be the only thing that matters
>>
>>72311504
I could spend a while doing a proper list but off the top off my head the next 5 would be something like

Reasonable Doubt
Madvillainy
ATLiens
Low End Theory
Nation of Millions

I dunno it's not really a competition the top20 records are all more or less equal. And I tried not to include 2 album by the same artist
>>
>>72311339
tl;dr
In my opinion, TPAB is great but somewhat overrated. /mu/ isn't one person btw
>>
>>72307365
This is my choice, it's just pretty much perfect
Other albums that I think you could argue include Low End Theory, Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Madvillainy, Donuts, MBDTF, GKMC
>>
>>72311551
That doesn't explain why MBDTF is /mu/ core.
>>
To Pimp a Butterfly has too many small spotty moments, it's still a great album, but not one of the best. Ice Cube's Amerikkka's Most Wanted might be it for me.
>>
>>72311551
Also /mu/ still isn't one person btw, in case you'd forgotten
>>
>>72311519
10 = Perfect/Incredible
9 = Outstanding
8 = Great
7 = Good
6 = Promising
5 = Mediocre
4 = Lacking
3 = Bad
2 = Awful
1 = Appalling/Unlistenable
>>
>>72311721
correct
>>72311519
incorrect in every sense
>>
>>72311660
its /mu/core because nascent black art aesthetic + 'prog' elements - efectively hip hop as a mature art form
>>
>>72311754
What a clueless fucking post. Won't even type a thoughtful reply.

Huh, so /mu/ doesn't actually strictly adhere to the opinions of the melon man? Really makes me think
>>
>>72311660
the reason we like kendrick, kanye, death grips, madvillainy etc etc is because we're all white kids who are most comfortable with rap music when it adopts this arty/progressive stance rather than just gangsta rap bling blling

but you could if you wanted to right?

all I'm saying is hip-hop got arty, the tracks got longer, the production matured etc
>>
>>72311803
Shut up bitch I like it because it sounds good to my ears. The gangsta stuff from the 90s also sounds good to my ears. People can like several types of music. Speak for yourself.

>>72311830
If you think hip-hop only started getting artsy in 2010 you need to seriously educate yourself by listening to more music. We like it because it sounds fucking incredible.
>>
>>72311792
if I wasn't watching melon man in another window right now I'd have a good comeback

Not saying hip hop wasnt arty before but you gotta admit the current 2010s era took a new direction in terms of aesthetics in hip-hop, and albums like MBDTF and GKMC are a large part of that

>I'm speaking on behalf of people who like it
Yeah, which is retarded. You don't know the reasons anyone else likes it, unless they've stated them.
>>
>>72311897
>current 2010s era took a new direction in terms of aesthetics in hip-hop, and albums like MBDTF and GKMC
I definitely agree with you there. It's been a very good decade for the genre. The advancements in technology have allowed for some very lush production that otherwise was unthinkable.
>>72311944
It's good is a pretty good reason and I'm pretty sure everyone in the history of the world who says they "like" something would say the thing they like is "good". This is going to come as a supreme shock to you but every form of music criticism ever is some variation of "I like it, it sounds good" or "I don't like it, it sounds bad."
