I recently started learning drums. The problem is, I don't really know how to learn them the most efficiently. I'm teaching myself through youtube and playing along to songs, but I click random tutorials in random orders. I think this lack of order is hindering my learning so I progress very slowly. Does anyone have any handy guides in how to tackle learning drums? Or just good channels, videos, techniques, even general drum-based musics are helpful.

This can be a drums general too.

Just spam rudiments. It's not very fun but it's the fastest way. There's a million online resources for this sort of thing

People will probably disagree with me but drumming along to Beatles tracks is a great way to get a solid foundation. Ringo uses very simple, repetitive beats and fills, easy enough for a beginner to use but very effective. A great way to understand the very basics.

Get a copy of Stick Control and learn rudiments. Play along to a metronome at slow enough speeds to play everything flawlessly before increasing your speed.

Pop/Rock: Drum Play-Along by Hal Leonard is good too.

I don't know if this applies to drums, but when I started learning guitar and bass, I picked the hardest fucking songs I knew of at the time and tried playing those.

Honestly rudiments and listening to music EXCESSIVELY. Figure out exactly what the drummers are doing just by listening. Rudiments build technique and gives you basic rhythmic tools to add variety to your playing. I also recommend learning to read sheet music, as it builds greater understanding of rhythm imo. A thing to strive for is limb independence, aka being able to do separate things with each limb. Limb independence is very necessary for all kinds of drumming especially fir latin grooves

Try drumming to Yes - Close to the Edge to start off.

Speed and flashy rudiments are overrated.

The thing that separates a good drummer from a bad one is timekeeping, the whole point of a drummer.

There are so many people who play drums and memorize shit like YYZ or other flashy prog/metal songs. Yet, they can't keep a simple beat. >>72293079 is right. Play along to the Beatles, AC/DC, maybe the Ramones, etc. They all have simple 4/4 beats but will show you the basics of timekeeping. They'll also teach you constraint -- there's nothing more annoying than a drummer who can't play through a simple tune without spamming his awesome complex drum fill he learned from Dream Theater.

Sure, learn some basic rudiments. But you can honestly tell a bad drummer from a good one based on the way they keep a 4/4 beat with a snare, hi-hat, and bass drum.

I highly recommend desk drumming with your feet/fingers if you're in school or have a desk job where you can zone out a lot. I've spent a lot more time desk drumming than actual drumming and it really can pay off if you slow down and practice it the same way you would drums.

It doesn't help with playing fast, or on time in general, because it removes factors like drum/cymbal location/distance and stick bounce, but it really can help with limb independence and learning the sort of patterns that you have to practice super slow a shitload of times.

Oh my God, this. I fucking hate how, in this one live performance of YYZ, Neil fucking HAS to throw in a goddamn 3-minute-long (not even exaggerating, that's actually how fucking long it is) drum solo that has literally nothing to do with the actual song, completely destroys the flow, and is just, "Oh, look at me, I'm such a fucking GOOD DRUMMER look at how big my fucking DRUM PEEN is."
