How does /mu/ feel about Noname?

"conscious" black music for white people.
>>72259141
Trite, stale, tries to hard too be soulful.

You mean (((white))) people

I like her, her main theme is going back to when you were a kid and I can relate with that

yass queen her skin is flawless. beautiful black ivory!

Can you explain to me how you feel she's trite in particular? I mean I definitely agree that stuff in her neo-soul vein is overflooding the market recently, but she kind of sets herself apart in my mind precisely because she can be really strong with imagery and metaphor. 'Casket Pretty' is a strong example of that, where she takes an overused subject (fear of police in the black community) and makes it intensely personable through the driving metaphor of the song (being "casket pretty") and also through evocative imagery ( "Roses in the road / Teddy bear outside / Bullet there on the right" ).

As far as I know she only has one project so I can't really say much about her. Telefone was good but it felt really light on the ears. She's so quiet I could fall asleep

>beautiful black ivory
fucking kek

her mixtape had like 2 or 3 cool songs, it's too samey and almost every song sounds the same though.

I almost shut it off right there. The harmonies were awful.
It's about presentation. Those themes can be explored but I came away from the album feeling bludgeoned with it with very little sonic interest to speak of. I really can't stand when music stumbles over itself in favor of pushing "meaning". It's especially important to realize this because English too will be a dead language one day and all songs eventually become meaningless.
That's why sonic character is of paramount importance and I find Telefone, musically speaking, fucking awkward. It doesn't create, but approximates something; it SOUNDS like what it's approximating, but it's ultimately not that.

She's my music waifu, if that's saying anything.
Telefone is seriously great
