Listened to pic related last night, it gave me a feeling really similar to HANL(I think they're even on the same label?). Really heavy but still has that sort of shoegaze warmth

Have you listened to this album? I think I've found it in a sharethread or an earlier /shugazi/ thread. As with most shoegaze albums I've listened to, it seems to me that most of them get better with multiple listens and Newmoon''s Space might become one of my favorites. It has a bleak, crushing and finally a feeling of relief. Definitely give it a listen.
>>
>>72218007

Yeah they're both part of The Flenser, you could probably peek at some other bands on there for more shoegaze bands of a similar variety.

Planning for Burial even manufactured some cassettes of HANL's compilation album Voids which was pretty sweet.
>>

>>72220340
i think it didn't quite get the exposure it deserved in the shoegaze community, but it fell kinda flat with me overall. the individual tracks range from alright to great, but everything blends together after a while.
>>
>>72220789
Yeah I'm getting some Whirr vibes from this too, pretty nice. Speaking of, does anyone know anymore Whirr-like bands/songs?
>>
>>72220974
>i think it didn't quite get the exposure it deserved in the shoegaze community, but it fell kinda flat with me overall.
This is what I've felt when listening to most shoegaze albums for the first time, except Loveless, though it grew on me. Which shoegaze albums would you recommend if I enjoyed Loveless, m b v, was disappointed by Isn't Anything and Going Blank Again and still indifferent to Souvlaki?
>>
>>72220640
not really a riff, but the chord porgression after the chorus on Change by Stella Luna always hits me hard
>>

if you want Loveless sounding albums, Despondent Transponder by Fleeting Joys, Stargazer by Stella Luna and In the Presence of Nothing by Lilys might please you. if you're indifferent to Isn't Anything and Souvlaki idk how much shoegaze you'll like tho, as most OG gaze sounds more like those than like Loveless.

Does anyone have an opinion on this?
>>
>>72221167
This bugs me to shit about rym, shoegaze is probably the worst offender. You'll have a band like Gene, who has a sound kind of reminiscent of Strangeways Here We Come, and all the reviews will talk about is whether they do or don't sound like the Smiths, and it stifles any real discussion.

The most baffling one I've seen is Idlewild and R.E.M. Any resemblence is such a tiny part of their sound but people can't shut up about it.
>>
>>72218849
Just listen to Starik and Sinister Waters II, that's the only time when it's not dreamy and floaty,

kinda same with STGSTV. Technically it's noise pop but not really /shugazi/. Mercury Rev is also kinda borderline /shugazi/ but I think there's enough guitar feedback in their first two albums to warrant discussion on here.

Beach House made sure that dream pop stayed dead. They are enjoyable to listen to but completely sanitized and safe. Dream pop needs to rediscover it's gothic roots because the genre is much more interesting when it blends light and dark sounds.

Just completed a second listen (although I had to skip some tracks during the second round, something I rarely do). It is bad. I went in with an open mind after being disappointed by the singles. It is uninspired, the production is bland, Rachel sounds like a transgender. I'm let down. Going to try again in a couple of days.

try OKC or other online dating websites. I've never seen shoegaze listed on tinder bios but on OKC I've seen a few girls who listens to shugazi. You can always try to start convos with girls at shugazi concerts but it's going to take some serious balls. It's really rare that girls go there on their own, they usually bring friends or come with their bf.

First of all who the fuck gives a shit about going to a gig alone, I do it and I always see plenty of other people alone too, especially for a big band like Slowdive. Second it's not a big deal because they will probably play new material and it's trash so you wouldn't miss anything.

Just started getting into shoegaze and have listened to maybe ~20 albums so far. Any other songs like Sweet Trip's DSCO? Probably one of my favorite songs so far.
>>
I really like the first track, sounds like a nice modernisation of their old sound.
I don't think I'll ever be that keen on Star Roving - it's fun I guess but it just sounds really uninspired compared to their old stuff.
Don't Know Why has potential to be really lovely. Really surprised in the first few seconds, sounded a bit like pinkshinyultrablast. I can't understand the vocals here though, at all. People might say shoegaze isn't about the vocals but with Slowdive I feel like they were always important. I feel like a lot of detail is lost in the mixing here. First impression is that it's kind of a waste of a potentially amazing song.
Sugar for the Pill... fuck you I like it.
Everyone Knows is nice I guess. Kind of washed over me.
No Longer Making Time is a highlight for me, has that beautiful almost Souvlaki-tier wall of sound. Last 40 seconds seemed weirdly tacked on but whatever.
Go Get It was pretty cool. Dark sexy atmosphere. Kind of like Souvlaki Space Station.
Falling Ashes feels like an evolution of the Pygmalion sound. I really like it, great way to end the album.

As a whole, lot better than I expected. Doesn't quite stand up to their '90s work - Souvlaki's atmosphere in particular was perfect and this just doesn't feel as satisfiying. I think it'll grow on me.

You're very right here, Slowdive usually writes pretty good lyrics and it's partially what makes Souvlaki stand out among the other shoegaze albums. For the new one it seems like they bought into the whole "muh obscured vocals" meme, which wouldn't be a problem if the instrumentals made up for it. But Souvlaki is better in that department too.

Holy shit man. The clean guitars remind me almost of U2 in the best way possible. I wish they did more straight-up noisegaze stuff like that, it's beautiful.
A few of the middle tracks were a little bland, but I'm really liking it. Agree that Rachel's voice hasn't aged well, which is a shame, but Niel carries it very nicely almost all by himself.

I've only listened the album twice but I I feel like Go Get It is one of the best songs they've ever done.

I tried out their album Pinkshinyultrablast but I can't find a good place to buy it and I have to piecemeal it from youtube, sadly. Don't like downloading all that much if I can, especially if it's stuff I'd like to learn to play.

I've been listening to Flying Saucer Attack for the past 24 hours. I don't know what I see in it but it's addicting. I like the part where the guitars go vvvVVVVVVvVVVVvvvvvVVVvvvVVvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVVVVVvvvvvv. Probably gonna treat myself to that reissue someone posted earlier in the thread.

I've also been struck by a kind of existential sadness that nobody who has been in space has listened to Flying Saucer Attack.

I haven't played guitar in quite some time but I have a Big Muff and an amp that has some great reverb on it. I feel very inspired listening to shoegaze.

Huh, I ended up buying it last night. Funny, I actually don't frequent /shugazi/ but the last time I was here I bought that Blonder Tongue Audio Baton reissue. And now I'm kinda hype for the new Slowdive and goddamn it, this place would make me broke if I stayed too long.
