The only issues I have with this is that Kendrick threw shots at possible rappers and the industry but barely followed up with that. What a fucking disappointment in that regard

Still one of the best hip hop albums of all time

DAMN being his best work doesn't take away from any of his other albums, as they've all been great projects.

But with DAMN we finally see Kendrick for himself. Even with GKMC a story about his childhood it was always an outside perspective and the perspective of so many other people around him that it was pretty much about everyone but himself in that story. Even when he holds a first person perspective it's not personal at all and is a tool.

But on this one Kendrick takes a backseat from the storytelling, pun intended and puts more emphasis on the his bars and the concept. You might think that this album is aimless but it's actually his most concise album. Sure, GKMC and TPAB, hell even Section 80 had a bigger concept but that was given to us at face value. Kendrick wasn't hiding anything, he wanted y'all to see what he was saying.

However on DAMN. he's MUCH more subtle. It's harder to see how songs and themes connect to each other but they do. If you look at the reversed segments on these albums they fit in a greater theme. The lady that shoots Kendrick in the beginning is lady justice. At the end of the album Kendrick reflects on how things would have been if him and his label's CEO got into a fight and died. The album plays with a different theme if you play it back to front. LUST-->LOVE becomes LOVE-->LUST. PRIDE-->HUMBLE becomes HUMBLE-->PRIDE. Wickedness back to front, Weakness front to back. You can really see this on the best song of the album, FEAR. Playing it front to back, we see Kendrick become more fragile and weaker to the end of the album. But reversed, seeing his father die, FEAR becomes the beginning, but delves into anger and ignorance until justice is done towards him. Even if you think this is a reach it still holds a lot of ground.

Even through all this depth, the songs on this album hold great replayability and value outside of the major concept which is something Kendrick hasn't been able to emulate since Section 80

listening to this I wonder where the "kill whitey" meme comes from. seems like Kendrick steal harbors a deal of resent for the black kids in Compton that used to gang bang and whoop his ass. it didn't help that his own Mom (and many black parents in these sort of circumstances) would threaten to beat his ass too for nearly anything, including for being afraid of the thugs outside.

somehow Kendrick managed to preserve and make it out of that situation but now he's facing a new set of fears, afraid that if he makes too many mistakes he'll end up back to shitty living, afraid of being judged by the people, not only because he wants to be seen as the greatest but because now he understands that his public appearance is a reflection of more than just himself but really everything he stands for. not to mention him touching on being tempted by the vices that often come with being rich and famous as well as feeling like he's been given the ridiculous duty of keeping the entire world in his prayers but all the while feel like nobody is even reciprocating and returning the favor. that man has had something to be afraid of his entire life and I think he's sick of living in fear. tons of emotion on this album, he touches on so much really.

I forgot where I saw it but Kendrick also commonly voices this fear that he's gonna revert right back to where he was before becoming famous, which I think is interesting because it shows how much of a toll his past life has taken on him. Being a millionaire and one of the most famous rappers in the world still isn't enough to give him comfort.
>>
I think it's pretty cool how GKMC, TPAB and DAMN can be seen as a kinda trilogy. With GKMC dealing with life in Compton, TPAB being about leaving the hood but still struggling personally and DAMN is a look back at it all showing that Kendrick still has some inner demons to fight.

TPAB > DAMN > GKMC > S80 > UU

Very interesting and great post. Well done. I think think the theory of development of Kendrick's character is very interesting, and you could make the argument if you zoom in on the 2 transitions you mentioned, but what is the logic behind Love > Lust > Humble > Pride, or Pride > Humble > Lust > Love? An additional narrative that would explain or support the development, like one he implemented in TPAB, is insufficient. Also, what are your arguments for the lady representing lady justice? Because of the two developments you described? But wasn't that also an argument for the lady representing lady justice? So are they supporting each other?

So I'm having trouble with the transition between Lust and Humble, and isn't GOD after FEAR very weird and contradicting that development?

>Why do american white males feel the need to listen to artists that blatantly hate them and call them abominations?
This is how /pol/ operates. They come up with rhetorical traps like this one or the hilarious "why do we import brown people who hate us and want to kill us"

Not really, it's just another one of the many sides of Kendrick so it sounds fresh

Bunch of faggot puedo intellectuals in here.
S80 > GKMC > DAMN. > UU > TPAB
>>
I don't get it. This album totally fucking sucks. It's garbage, sounds like any other hip hop out right now. How are people seeing genius in this? Also I feel like he's trying to sound like Drake hardcore
>>
I dont understand. Why is Kendrick trying to be drake.
>>
>>72213801
Fuck this album.

On half of the songs he's trying to be DRAKE. He even got a Rihanna feature. Shit's embarrassing.
>>
>>72219993
>>72220008

It's what he calls "giving back to the community." It seems like in hip hop culture, selling out is what you're expected to do. Especially a lot of black people and hip hop fans in general are glad to see a return to more traditional hip hop beats rather than the jazzy art stuff from TPAB. Also, competition is a huge part of hip hop. Rappers sort of "copy" each other with certains types of beats and flows just to say they did it better. I think that's what Kendrick is trying to do with DAMN. rather than push the genre forward. Seems like more of a personal thing for him.
>>
>>72219993
>sounds like any other hip hop out right now

yeah, it's, I don't know, generic?
>>
>>72220132
Then it would be the antithesis of TPAB, doesn't make a lot of sense, especially considering the narrative in TPAB.
>>
>>72213999
>how things would have been if him and his label's CEO got into a fight and died

I don't think you listen to these songs well enough
>. But reversed, seeing his father die

Like kenny just makes a song and you get on your knees IF you really think that was what fear was about
>>
>>72220190
>>72220190

I guess you could say that. To put more emphasis on the "giving back to the community" thing, I think with TPAB he was putting out his vision primarily to intellectuals and critics in a way to be appreciated as an artist.
Now the targeted demographic is flipped. By that I mean now he's making music for the masses because he got his point across. Also probably to make that $$$
>>
>>72219993
The whole reason I like Kendrick is because he DOESN'T sound like todays "hip hop." I am in my 30's and can't get into any of the new rappers.

I grew up listening to C-BO, Brotha Lynch and other west coast rappers. Some of the beats that he uses has some of the old west coast feel in the base lines and the high pitched sounds (I don't make beats, don't know what to call them)that go along with it.
>>
I think i heard elsewhere the main sample in PRIDE but for the love of God i can't remember where. Please someone tell me they know it because i'm going crazy over it.
>>
TPAB = DAMN. > GKMBC > S80

He's not reached his peak yet.

he peaked at OD

I strongly disagree.

TPAB is a historic album.

DAMN. is a complex as fuck album that is going to leave people fighting about interpretations for years. I can't really think of any music that has ever managed to do that to this extent.

Maybe some of the Beatles stuff...but not really.

it's not really not that complex, in the year 2009 the ghost of 2Pac was busy with Charles Hamilton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2PGZCfgU1g

but after Charles gave his audience at a show some free time on the mic and K Dot stepped up 2Pac jumped ship and went to hang with K Dot and DAMN. is the culmination of all that's happened since then

The song is aimed at Gerardo Rivera, so there's that. But obviously the song is Kendrick baiting fox and all the racist neocons, it's the song they'd boil him down to anyway.

Conservative pundits have no real reason to tear him down. This guy regularly brings the bible into his work, dismantles and unpacks the gangbanging, pimping, drugslinging ways of his city with ingenious literary flourishes, then takes a step back and offers God as the answer. It's literally just racism.

And everytime somebody goes all /pol/ on DNA. or anything, you KNOW they missed the point entirely. You KNOW they missed all the poignance of FEEL., PRIDE., XXX., FEAR., and DUCKWORTH. You KNOW they didn't bother to take DNA., LOYALTY., HUMBLE., and GOD. for anything but face value, and they will NEVER give anything to one of the furthest-right thinkers in the pop culture sphere.

And don't tell me that bringing up Trump... maybe twice? Three times? negates all of Kendrick's conservatism. Trump isn't a conservative, he's godless. But that's beyond the point.
