I can't say I miss much of the music from the 90s, and I was discovering my own music in the 00s so I wasnt really paying attention to the radio or anything.

But I distinctly remember a lot of awful things about the 90s, like boy/girl bands, shit like Aqua. Do you remember fucking Aqua? Jesus christ I'm mad just thinking about it.

00s. I'm 27, so the 00s were my teenage decade. The entire era felt so retrospective, that was the problem. It seemed like every band, movie, and TV show wanted to be a retro throwback. Nu Metal and Teen Pop may have started at the end of the 90s, but they were really dominant in the early 00s. Those emo-pop bands were awful. People here like shitting on the modern "pizzacore" pop punk bands, but they're infinitely better than the mainstream pop punk bands of the 00s.

Looking back, there was some great music that happened in the 00s. It was probably screamo's greatest era, and a lot of interesting things happened in extreme metal. But that stuff didn't define popular culture at all. In the mainstream, the garage rock revival had many great bands, but it doesn't get more retro than that genre.

Of course there was tons of good stuff from the 80's, I know that. But the production techniques of that time just sound so fucking bad to me I don't know. Especially the drums. Drums in the 80's were just really annoying. Even some of the good stuff loses a bit of quality because either the drums or the bass sound bad in the mix

2000's is very underrated.

I mean we're already at 2017, this decade has just flown threw with nothing interesting other than dickheads arguing with each other about what causes they support.

In 2000, the internet was still primitive and really did feel like you were ostracized for anything you put up. This site, even though it has become complete shit, is one of the last remnants of that time.

As for music, the music in 2000 felt like a throwback to the 80's, but we did get the rise of indie rock and hip-hop changed as well. I would still say the 90's were better ,even though the late 90's were uninspiring.

The best part of 90s/early 00s internet was the lack of homogeneity. There were tons and tons of unique, tight-knit communities, and even all the regular websites felt different and unique, and like they had a soul and their own personality.

But ever since about 10 years ago, everything feels so samey and soulless. Most of the online communities have died out, and the ones that still exist (or have newly formed), both small and popular, feel like they're just a part of one bigger single entity: the new internet, where everything is an oh-so-hilarious meme. Sure, in the old days there were memes, but they were way more rare and didn't take over everything. Now it's just ridiculous.

The internet has gotten too easy for the normies to use, and this was what ultimately destroyed its charm. Yes, the internet being somewhat of a secret club WAS actually a good thing. When everyone (thinks they) knows everything that everyone else does, it all gets watered down and the signal:noise ratio gets out of whack. And nobody really has their own personality anymore, it's all the same copy and paste style and shit that everyone does to fit in and it just sucks ass.

In terms of mainstream music and pop culture?

The mid-late 2000s for sure.

The mid-90s and early 2000s at least had mainstream alternative music and subcultures that kids could get into if they didn't want to listen to N'Sync or Puff Daddy.

You had bands like Korn and Marilyn Manson and Blink 182 and Rage Against The Machine and Rammstein and Sum 41 that were as mainstream as everything else at the time and gave a chance for kids to discover real punk or real metal through those gateways.


Sure looking back on it now especially if you weren't part of that generation it's easy to go EPIC CRINGE XD but it was still -something-, what the fuck do kids have as an accessible alternative music culture? That shit all died out with 3rd generation "emo" and scene kids around the myspace era of the mid-late 2000s.

It's really hard to choose, and hard to be objective considering how much I've listened to their earlier albums.

You know what, even though it's often their most-hated album, Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses has to be my favorite. It was such a contrast from the balls-to-the-wall brutality and edgyness of Iowa while still being heavy as fuck, it was just something completely different from them. I still love it to this day.

Then, their self-titled, then Iowa, then AHIG and .5

Their last two albums just felt like bad imitations of Vol.3 .5 especially was so bad IMO that I can't listen to it.


It's also amazing how I used to think that their music and their look was totally scary when I was like 14.

Like I said it's really really easy to look back now and judge it and say it's bad or cringe or whatever - but it's a million times better than today's mainstream rock scene which is completely non-existant at all.
