Minor 9th.

The exact root note doesn't matter, just like all of the chords posted ITT. its the quality of the chord, not the root note that makes the difference. Unless you have synesthesia and perfect pitch, you're not going to be able to discern an FMaj7 played in isolation from an EMaj7 Played in isolation. They are both Major7th chords, and have the same general quality.

Minor major 7th chords are also cool - the james bond chord

for me it would have to be a "modified" F#/Gb m7.

don't have a diagram on hand but just pick up your guitar and play it

>2x020x

shit sounds pretty smooth, especially if you arpeggiate it and leave the A string open instead of muted.

>>72192575
Diminished and Augmented chords are beautiful.

>>72182621
The root note does matter, as it tells you in which part of the octave the notes lie. If the chords aren't inverted next to each other it's easy to tell if a note hangs around A versus E. Peoples voices have a range and thus they tend to favor chords that work well with their range.

>>
Not a chord, but I'm a massive sucker for I-Imaj7-I7 chord movements.
>>
>>72195975
A minor 6th is also an inversion of a half-diminished chord.

Try resolving it a whole-step lower than the root of your m6 chord.

I think if you do this, though, you're really treating it as a half-diminished chord with a root a half-step lower than the major chord you're resolving to.
>>
Caug(add9)
Go ahead. Play it
>>
>>72196787
Okay, I gave it some more thought and I thought about how the only minor chord that has a natural 6 or natural 13 in major scale harmony is the ii chord. So try resolving your m6 chord up a 4th or down a 5th to the V7 chord.

Example:

Dm6 to G7

lol no, they are ugly pointless chords without context
>>
I have a question for all the theory nerds out there, how can you tell which chords go together when you start dealing with major 7th's or flat 5th's sharp 9th's and what not. Like I understand the circle of fifths but how can you tell how more advanced chords go together without playing them.
Also my fav chord is Cmajor7 but played open not a fan of barre chords desu.

In major scale harmony...

The I chord:
Ionian: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13

The ii chord:
Dorian: 1, b3, 5, b7, 9, 11, 13

The iii chord:
Phrygian: 1, b3, 5, b7, b9, 11, b13

The IV chord:
Lydian: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, #11, 13

The V chord:
Mixolydian: 1, 3, 5, b7, 9, 11, 13

The vi chord:
Aeolian: 1, b3, 5, b7, 9, 11, b13

The vii chord:
Locrian: 1, b3, b5, b7, b9, 11, b13

Sorry I'm a shit teacher
>>
>>72198878
I'm not quite following honestly
So do these different modes just work better with non-standard chords?

>>
>>72199092
Sorry man I'm shit at explaining things simply and succinctly.

So an example... in C Major, your chords are based on each note of the C Major scale:

Template for any key:

I ii iii IV V vi vii(dim)

Example in C Major:
C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim

Each note of the scale has a corresponding mode that you build the chords off of. So if you keep extending the harmony out, you get the formula/template

IMaj7 iim7 iiim7 IVMaj7 V7 vim7 viim7b5

In the key of C Major, that would be

CMaj7, Dm7, Em7, FMaj7, G7, Am7, Bm7b5

In this way, you can use the modes' formulas to further extend out the harmony, for example

CMaj9, Dm9, Em7(b9), FMaj9, G9, Am9, Bm7b5(b9)

or even further, though I'm not really sure about what the naming conventions are for some of the chords
