I wasn't too hyped up as I don't really get hyped for things but Kendrick is one of my favorite rappers around for sure and this definitely ranks high up on his list of albums. It's a lot smaller in scope but every song is very good except for Love which I just kind of tuned out

There is a lot of very memorable moments as well. FEAR is probably my favorite track but there's a few other contenders.
It doesn't feel as much of a timely classic as TPAB and isn't a classic coming of age album like GKMC but it feels like another classic in it's own way. Only first impressions from one listen. I do get the concept of the album tying back to the beginning and how easy life can be influenced

Does anyone else feel the beats ruined the album? His rapping is the best I've heard for who knows how long while the prodcution sounds uninspired.. I'd be excited if a personal friend made these beats, but I expect a lot more from someone who's catalog includes MAAD City, Sing About Me, Backseat Freestyle, U, etc. etc. etc.

From the Ground was a nice little rest track, but starting out so slow with tracks 2-4 felt like a bad decision. Downward Spiral sets the tone for the album really well, but the tone isn't really explored again until Lost. Makes no sense to me.

Meanwhile, Dance in the Water comes in at an almost perfect time. Danny is clearly high as all fucking shit by this point in the album, so he basically does the Rick Dance. Its such a perfect house party song.

I now get why i dont like this album. It sounds like a watered down TLOP to me. More conventional bass and sample usage, same simplistic melodies, more beat changes, but it isn't entertaining to listen to. The existential qualm isn't interesting unless you give a shit about Kendrick beforehand.

Part of it is Kendrick addressing that record labels and mainstream media are tainting rap/hip-hop. The former by signing wack artists to million dollar deals and the latter being Fox News (partnered with CBS, the channel that hosts the Grammys), specifically their small remark on his Grammy performance. They promote the garbage you hear on radio, but then when someone tries to come out with a hopeful message for people, they attempt to twist that message into something negative. Kendrick's response to these issues is exposing Fox News, and taking out the pop shit to put even more uplifting messages on his album. He then attempts to separate black artist from wack artist.

This is probably going to go over alot of people's heads and the wack rappers are going to feign ignorance and keep putting out crappy music.

I really like it. If you went in with expectations of the same structure and approach of GKMC/TPAB, you'd be disappointed. This feels so new and inventive, like Kendrick's own Atrocity Exhibition.

It's a rewarding experience and I want to get to know the album even more.
