come on now
The fact that so many books still name My Bloody Valentine as “the greatest or most significant or most influential” shoegaze band ever only tells you how far shoegaze music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Shoegaze critics are still blinded by commercial success. My Bloody Valentine sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Shoegaze critics are often totally ignorant of the shoegaze music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that My Bloody Valentine did anything worthy of being saved.

The end of his m b v review:
>However, the problem remains the same: a trivial idea gets repeated endlessly without coalescing into anything of substance.
There is little to salvage on this collection of mediocre derivative songs. This is the confused work of musicians with no inspiration who desperately try different styles hoping that at least one will work. Maybe they were not so great after all. In the annals of rock music i can't remember a reunion that did not disappoint. I would be glad to write that this is the exception to the rule.

I've listened to Loveless 8 or more times by now and I've only listened to m b v once. However, I had instant favorites from Loveless, but no real standouts from m b v. Perhaps I should listen to it more times. Did you have the same opinion?

It's no Loveless, but it's not a 5/10 either. Here I'm just trying to point out that Scaruffi is too old to review music at this point if he thinks that all reunions have been shit.
