This is spooky, I was just pondering making a Lizard thread.
It really is a remarkable album, one of my favourites in any genre. It's so jagged and baroque in its instrumentation, and yet every track coheres with the overall oppressive mood of the album.
My track ratings:
Cirkus: 9.5/10, absolutely stunning, dark, surrealist fantasy, one of the band's best
Indoor Games: 8/10, clever lyrics which suit Haskell's voice, shame it sounds so damn much like Cat Food in places. Better lyrics than Cat Food, though
Happy Family: 7/10, sets the mood of madness very well, and again a few smart Sinfieldisms, but not as memorable as Indoor Games
Lady of the Dancing Water: 8/10, one of the prettiest Crimson ballads
Prince Rupert Awakes: 9/10, Jon Anderson does really well with this, fantastic combination of darkness and optimism, the instrumental arrangement is fantastic, even though some have criticised it for being too simplistic (hogwash)
Bolero: 10/10, the best bolero in rock music, much better than Abaddon's Bolero from Trilogy
Battle of Glass Tears:7.5/10, slightly overrated in my view, fantastic contrasts in dynamics marred by a slightly listless structure and a Haskell that has just given up pretending to care by this point. Still pretty good
Big Top: 1/10 Why?
Probably my fourth favourite Crimson album after ITCOTCK, Larks and Red. There are days when I rate it above Red, though.
