The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

here are some of my fav albums, what should I listen to
Morton Feldman - Rothko Chapel and Why Patterns?
I enjoyed the first piece, especially the dissonant vocal chords in part 3. I would definitely listen to something that explored more of that. The minimal, free time thing he had going on for most of the rest of the piece was interesting but I didn't find it super engaging. The melody of the last part was quite beautiful, and worked well in between periods of dissonance. I also think this would be amazing to hear live in the right venue. Why Patterns? wasn't much to listen to, but reading about it was interesting, particularly how Feldman would screw with performers by intentionally making his sheet music slightly inefficient to read. Overall not bad, I would listen to the first piece again, but I didn't particularly grab me.

I was slightly disappointed in Stage 1, but after hearing this, I definitely have more hope for the rest of the stages. Function - The Secret Miracle Fountain (2006)
>ambient pop
Very unique album that goes above and beyond its often bland genre. It mostly succeeds because of how often it strays away from "ambient pop", experimenting with folk, psychedelia, post-rock, and even straight-up ambient. The ambient tracks are much more sound-based than anything else, and the general lack of interesting textures makes them feel entirely unnecessary, but all of the other genre experiments are very nice. They definitely stick out in the context of the album, but all of the distinguishing characteristics of these genres are changed in a way that makes them fit seamlessly in the mix. It's a perfect length, shockingly enough considering it's 74 minutes long, but it's paced in a way that makes the whole album feel like a journey, and a pretty damn nice one at that.

>shake - ...waiting for russell
this drove me crazy because "arise" and "detroit state of mind" are really really great but i'm not sold on the middle two tracks. "arise" is a beautiful track that really doesn't seem like 8 minutes. i like the synths that just hang out low in the mix for most of the song which add a nice dimension. "detroit state of mind" honestly sort of reminds me of boards of canada for some reason. really liked the melody of this one, made a satisfying conclusion to the album. i find "frictional beat" to be extremely grating and unrelenting. "stereotype" is certainly not bad, but it doesn't match the level of the first and last track. i feel like there just isn't enough content/variation to warrant a 7 minute track. so 1/2 really good 1/4 bad and 1/4 ok for me
best tracks: "arise", "detroit state of mind"
>built to spill - perfect from now on
'how have i not heard this yet'-core pt 1. i'm not crazy about the vocalist but i don't actively dislike him. the first song is easily the best on the album, though i also really liked "stop the show" too, which builds up real well. the guitar work is well done. i didn't dislike any tracks, but they are all pretty similar in sound, which means the album is cohesive but it can feel a little same-y to me. when i look at the tracklist i notice that the longer tracks, like "velvet waltz", were the ones i liked the least. there's also "kicked in the sun", which has a great great great last minute, but the rest of the song is honestly not that good. i expect that this album may grow on me the more that I listen to it.
best tracks: "randy described eternity", "stop the show", "out of site"
which albums should i do next?

My FUCKING computer crashed and deleted all my reviews plus a project I'm working on. I'm so fucking sick of this Lenovo. Every time I try playing music and using Chrome for over a few hours it just shits out on me. Short, shitty reviews it is sorry about that.
I spent a lot of time talking about stuff, but the only two things that I thought were really incredible were Ice Cube's Death Certificate for it's untamed humor mixed with unbridled rage and Pierre Schaeffer's L'œuvre musicale, in which he displays a lot of his really interesting styles, but part of it feels lost on me.
I also listened to
>Madlib - Madlib Medicine Show: No. 6 - Brain Wreck Show
Very cool mix of psych music, but not everything sticks.
7
>The Dovers - We're Not Just Anybody
Two beginning songs are amazing. Everything else ranges from disappointing to mediocre.
7
>Yamir C. - Mullväd
I enjoyed the Branca-esque angular melodies and full band performances, but long for the atmosphere I know Yamir is great at creating. Having a noise-rock track titled "For Keiji" is the most Yamir thing I've ever heard of.
6
>Chick Corea - Return to Forever
Side-B is where it's at. Explosive, really out there fusion is where it's at, but side-A of this felt a bit subdued than some of it's former contemporaries.
6
>Ethan Chandler - Rituals
I just think the last two tracks' lengths are sort of a stretch for how simple the songs are. I enjoyed the first track though.
5
>Grateful Dead - Europe '72
I have decided I do not like this band.
5
>Simon Bookish - Everything/Everything
Some okay pop melodies and "Carbon" is an alright track, but the zolo styles don't really lend themselves to the songwriting here imo.
5
>Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun
It's very bad but also not good. "Southern California" is almost good, but just one of the few fleshed-out songs on here, making it by far the best.

Anouar Brahem - Le pas du chat noir (2002)
>chamber jazz, arabic jazz
It's ECM, so this is about as close as you can get to easy listening jazz while still having some substance. This is technically put together perfectly. All of the instrumentalists are at the top of their games, especially Brahem with his beautiful, flowing, stream-of-consciousness oud playing and Couturier's impressionistic piano playing, but the pieces themselves amount to little more than noodling. Very pretty noodling, mind you, but there's still a very little sense of progression in any of these pieces. The melodic nature of every piece is a nice touch, but they all have little else to offer beyond that. It's also got some definite """world music""" vibes at points, but it's still a decently enjoyable record.

Thats what i love and hate about ecm. Abdullah Ibrahim - Water From an Ancient Well (1986)
>cool jazz, cape jazz
Like a Vince Guaraldi record with no charm. Ibrahim's music is incredibly easy-going and passive, which doesn't make for a terribly interesting listen, and that's a shame because he's obviously got the power to make some really great, spiritual music as evidenced by segments of the twelve-minute title track and the beautiful ending to "The Mountain". It gets better and more subdued as it goes on, but it never really gets all that great, and the first half before the title track is really bland and cheesy stuff.

This was a really tough listen for me. Not just because of the length, but because I started out being extremely bored with it. But as the album went on, I found myself absorbed more and more with the unique atmosphere of it. The noise on this thing manages to swallow me up, and make the 2 hours it packs fly by. I loved the American primitivism on here, and I especially love the last song. I'm still a bit unsure of this album, but I think in the end, I really enjoyed.

Contortions - Buy (1979)
>no wave
A lot of funky no wave is very percussion-based (Liquid Liquid, Konk), so it's interesting to hear an album in that style that has rather subdued drum work. In place of flashy drums is Chance's incredibly flashy, skronky sax, which anchors every track with it's unique, atonal style. Chance's vocals perfectly compliment his sax, they're both screaming, loud, and abrasive as hell, which works really well. The guitar work is great as well, it's perfectly angular and jagged, like good no wave guitar work should be. The only major criticism I have is that it's really, incredibly one-note, but that's not a major issue because of how short this is, which is perfect.

To quote a compilation of Zappa's, shut up and play your guitar! The instrumental tracks and the less comedic vocal tracks here are really great jazz-rock remiscent of Hot Rats, with the title track and "Cosmik Debris" being major standouts. The comedy tracks here, on the other hand, are seriously some of Zappa's worst stuff. An obscene amount of '70s slang tanks "Uncle Remus" (which was practically dead on arrival, let's be real), and "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" and "Nanook Rubs It" are both mind-bogglingly dumb. There's a lot of good here, but there's definitely some seriously bad stuff to balance that out.

Roly Poly Rag Bear - Straw, Water, Pinstripe (2004)
>indie pop
Nice, charming little EP. It sounds a lot like My Little Airport, primarily because of the similarly whisper-thin, cute quality of the vocals, and just like that band, it's probably /too/ cute. It's twee as hell, but I mean that in its regular derogatory meaning. Some nice melodies here and there, and it is /really/ damn cute and cozy, I can't even deny that, but it often sacrifices good songwriting and good hooks and melodies for it's cute atmosphere, which sometimes misses its mark.
2.5-
Jessica Pratt - Jessica Pratt (2012)
>contemporary folk, singer/songwriter
Not as good or as ambitious as On Your Own Love Again, but a fine singer/songwriter album on its own merits. It's incredibly simple, consisting of Pratt and her guitar, nothing more. The stripped-down approach causes a lot of the tracks to sound basically the same, mainly because Pratt's guitar parts aren't terribly ambitious, but the vocal melodies and Pratt's unique vocals keep each track fresh and enjoyable. She really is an astounding vocalist, very similar to Joanna Newsom in a lot of ways but rougher and more down to Earth, and her guitar parts are decent (take "Hollywood", for example), they're just certainly the weakest part of the album. Can't wait for her next record.

Jib Kidder - Teaspoon to the Ocean (2015)
>psychedelic pop, neo-psychedelia, indietronica
I love "bad" vocalists, rough vocalists, nasally vocalists, whathaveyou, but whatever the hell Kidder is doing with his voice here I fucking ABHOR. He's got an incredibly nasally adolescent voice (like I can talk), which could be fine on its own, but the layers and layers of effects he slathers on them make them about ten times harder to stomach and a hundred times more gut-wrenchingly irritating. I can safely say that the album is essentially ruined by the vocals. The instrumentals aren't great by any means, they're competent but really unmemorable psych pastiches, but any good that they bring to the table are negated by those damn vocals. I never thought vocals could kill an album like this, but here we are.

Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers (1976)
>rock & roll
Even though this is definitely a lesser record than The Modern Lovers or I, Jonathan, Richman's effervescently charming personality and songwriting talent carries this album perfectly, every track is catchy and every track makes me smile. It's mostly basic rock & roll stuff with a heavy emphasis on simplicity, and the tracks more rooted in this tradition aren't my favorite, but Richman's delivery is so damn great and the band is so on point that it really doesn't matter. Bonus points for the falsetto leap on "New England", that made me crack a humongous smile.

Dumping some reviews before i totally delet @ me
Colleen - Captain of None
>Art Pop, Folktronica, Reggae influences, Electronic dabblings
A flickering cloud of sound, held up by the sounds of a viola; the bass is her viola under an Octaver pedal, the plucking is her treble. I'm not a fan of reggae, but the sonic control and usage of her cello made the ideas Colleen borrows from the genre feel fresh and new. Colleen's voice also has echoes of Bjork, but takes a backseat to the production and exposed instruments.
A solid and comfy listen.
7/10
Loke Rahbek & Puce Mary - The Female Form
>Noise, Industrial, Dark Ambient
Not a huge fan of noise, so this didn't do too much for me. It felt kinda cheap using high frequency waves to irritate, because if they weren't there this would be an otherwise unremarkable industrial album. Doesn't mean that ALL of the album is bad, though, but the first two tracks were a rough start for me. The 3rd and 4th were more along the lines of minimal synth, the 4th feeling actually hypnotic.
And then it goes back to high frequences in the 5th track and I barf a little in my mouth
Overall, not very interesting or explorative from other noise/industrial albums I've already heard.
4/10
F ingers - Hide Before Dinner
>Ambient, """"Death Folk"""", Minimal Synth, Psychedelic
Murky psychedelic drone, rather than spook-core (sadly). Also features LST (on this chart, Th Duo), with his lo-fi electronic production. Album starts off slow with unmoving drones and far off vocals, but really builds with the whole "twisted childhood memory" theme with Tantrum Time. Under The House Hard To Breathe is another standout, as it mixes a playful square wave with throbbing bass.
Don't go into this album thinking it'll be scary, though. It's more like remembering childhood memories that have never happened.

but any album with avantgarde in its name is bound to be a joke so whatever
Butthole Surfers - Butthole Surfers (1983)
>noise rock
Probably my favorite thing I've heard from these guys, but I'm still not a huge fan. The vocals from both Haynes and Leary don't appeal to me that much, and the slower, more alt-rocky tracks suck. There are some great batshit noise rock jams here, "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave" and "Wichita Cathedral", especially. If the whole EP was like those tracks, I'd love it, but as it stands I'm pretty mixed.

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle
>Synthpop, New Wave
You know, I’m not really one for the synthpop thing but I loved this album. The synths on here may sound a bit dated, as you may expect if you’ve heard his tracks like “Cars”. But the synths aren’t used in a corny/gimmicky pop way as most of the stuff in the 80s. Instead, they add a dark, almost post-punk kind of sound to the album. On tracks like “Metal” and “Films”, they wail eerily in the background, creating this ominous little soundscape for Numan to sing over. There’s even little violins or something on here that add a cold little twinge on a couple of tracks. It’s pulled off surprisingly well and has this paranoid, sci-fi, futuristic for the 80s kind of feel that I dug.
At the end of the day though, this sound is a little too cold for me, with the tracks kind of wearing on me by the end of the release. The riffs are all shockingly similar and besides, artsy pop from this era isn’t exactly in my lane all the time. The less abrasive standouts, notably “Cars” and “Observer” are pretty fantastic. And I definitely appreciate what Numan was going for here, he pulls off the style quite well. I’m just not 100% sold on the style even though there are a fair number of nice moments.
3/5
Wilson Pickett - The Exciting Wilson Pickett
>Southern Soul
If you find a soul album with a bold adjective like “Amazing”, “Incredible” or “Exciting” in the title, I think it’s a guaranteed win. This is no exception, as Pickett has some tight little numbers on here. Lots of aspects I like from soul on here, with the instrumentation really kicking things up a notch and adding a peppy, upbeat vibe to the whole thing. It’s not the most amazing or innovative stuff but it’s certainly a great listen. Plus it’s only about 30 minutes so it’s nice and manageable.

Scott Walker - The Drift
This thing was a real mixed bag of heavy and often terrifying instrumentals, weird lyrics, and the sort of atmosphere that would make David Lynch jealous. I liked the songs that sounded like a more modern take on no-wave, and while the lyrics were certainly unique, I found I was trying to decipher them just as often as I was blocking them out. The shock value started to wear off towards the end, but for those first songs especially it was pretty thrilling. For the most part I enjoyed it, I can admire how the whole album is designed to be a sort of nightmare. Also some gr8 memeworthly lyrics. I guess I'll call this a 7-

old school hip-hop
>>72083185
That project in particular is pretty okay, it's split into two parts which is interesting. First half is full of mellower poppy tracks and the second half is harder and more political. >Tennis - Yours Conditionally
Say what you will about how this doesn't grab you or how they're not breaking any new ground even in terms of vintage AM-radio-tinged indie pop--think something on the easier side of Beach House--but these are well crafted pop songs, nonetheless. Each song is masterfully layered in the right way. My only criticism is that the album as a whole doesn't display much of a musical range. It's pretty one-note in that respect. In fact, few of the songs themselves evolve enough to end any differently than they began. But neither Tennis or their fans should take this as criticism--it's breezy music, seemingly with remaining easy and unforced as a main objective.
And they just do this really well. Maybe more than songwriting ability, they have a phenomenal ear for production. Each song may follow a similar strict formula, but they know so well how and when to peel back the percussion or add the right type of effects to synths and guitar lines, etc. They have some great knowledge of song structure and although none of it may really jump out at you, it's clear they know what they're doing in the studio, and they deserve more attention than the masses of hazy indie pop acts.
