If you're asking that question you're blessed much more than you may know. At least you don't have cancer, or a terminal illness that will kill you at 30 or something.

Definitely didn't wait to long. You just gotta take it pretty seriously. Take lessons with a good teacher and you can improve very quickly. After that, you just have to practice enough.
>>

Go for it. It's better to try and fail then never try at all. I'm actually trying to teach my dad to play since he's always wanted to learn.

Batio seems like a genuinely nice guy, if anyone ever wants to chill and watch some guitar shit I recommend watching this guy's guitar clinics and his interview with Troy Grady. Which are all on YouTube
>>
>>72056239
How much should I practice each day if I want (relatively) fast results? Is 3 hours enough?
>>
>>72056388
What the fuck is up with Troy Grady? He has a multimillion sub production quality yet only has like 50k
>>
>>72056414
At the very least practice an hour a day. 3 hours a day would be good. I would recommend, if you can, to practice 5 hours a day. When I went to school, pretty much everyone practiced for at least 5 hours a day. Although, it's not just the amount you practice, you have to make sure you do a good job of practicing and not just messing around. It also depends on the style of music you want to play.

>>
>>72056567
Yeah this is a super early model. the headstock is a little different now. I won't have this one for long but I'll certainly be buying another
>>
>>72056555
That's certainly doable. You probably don't have to practice 5 hours a day in that case. 1-3 hours would suffice. I would still recommend a good teacher too. Navigating a guitar can be pretty tricky. The main thing is just finding a good teacher that can help you set up a good practice routine and to help you understand what you need to practice. It can be hard to figure out what to practice and focus your energy on by yourself.
>>
>>72056646

>>
>>72057415
Aren't a tele and strat close enough that you only need one?
>>
>>72057894
Well strat now you have a guitar with a floating trem which can be very useful, also no tele can sound like a strat in the neck/middle combo setting

Also strats you could in theory put a humbucker in the bridge and now you have your super strat/metal guitar
>>
>>72057922
Fair point. What sound can you get out of a tele that you can't get from a strat?
>>
>>72057415
>>72057894
>>72057922
friendly reminder that Leo Fender designed the strat to be used for western swing style music and be able to perform any and every part of a song, from rhythm to lead, and back.
>>
>>72057951
Personal experience when I play a tele in a band setting nearly any genre it will always cut through and be heard

If there's another guitarist, strats tend to get lost in the mix, plus bridge setting just doesn't quite have the bit of a tele

If I had to choose one and one only it would be a tele, maybe add a bigsby.

>>72057979
like I said strats are great if you're the only guitarist or in the studio, live every time with another guitarist they just tend to get lost
>>
>>72058015
well when you're using singles and the slash wannabe is using both humbuckers with everything turned to 10, yeah

>>
>>72058054
I pick it up every day, but never do anything that makes me better. I can't go without it but I can't commit to it enough to get better.
>>
>>72058038
Like I said more of a personal thing, but I think strats really shine when they're the only guitar, the range of tones is very beautiful

General question:

I live in an apartment and sound is a big issue here, so I feel I can't really play unless it's through headphones

I need a way of playing guitar through headphones while listening to music a the same time (i.e. I get both music and guitar through headphones).

I know fuck all about this sort of thing and how I can make it work. I've got an amp, laptop, wireless headphones, ... I just don't know what to plug into what. Forgive me for being a retard.

Yikes, ashamed to admit it but about a year. A few times... a year or 2 after starting when i got discouraged because 2 dudes i played with told me i sucked cause i didn't learn metallica shit, when i moved out and my brothers wanted to play L4D and COD WAW on 360 online all the time. Again when my kid was like ~2-3 and every time i picked it up she'd come over and grab at the strings and shit until just stopped trying to pick it up. I play every day now tho, with maybe 1 or 2 days a week break if i got grown up stuff to do but never 2 in a row.

Any luthiers here that can provide some information?

So I have a Les Paul. Just a regular Les Paul with a regular Les Paul neck joint.
I used to love them but my current main axe is a neck through guitar that I've had for a year and now my fingers are so used to it that trying to play solos on a Les Paul is annoying and frustrating as shit.

From what I understand, the neck of a Les Paul is not only glued at the base, but from the sides as well. So in theory I could use a wood file to reshape the neck joint and make it look like a Gibson Axcess heel, right?

This guitar always has .10 strings and I usually keep it tuned half step down (or Standard D#) so I'm guessing the string tension is not a lot. Do I risk fucking the neck up? It's not a Gibson or even Epiphone, but I still like it and don't want to ruin the guitar.
>>
I've been playing guitar for about 10 years, and over the summer I picked up electric bass to join my college jazz band
But I still have a lot of trouble with proper slaps, it seems fucking impossible to me and everyone tells me it's "so easy" to do
am I just a retard? tips? will it even matter for performing jazz?

sell it , you could fuck it up ! buy something that is made to be that way , one example could be the les paul matt heafy signature guitar from epiphone comes with 6 and 7 strings . reshapeing it with a wood file is a bad ideea , besides , doing this "guitar tunning" could cost you a new one. so why would you invest work, stress and money into something that could go wrong ? keep playing the oe you have and hide 100$ very month ... bam... in 4 months you can get a new one without stressing over it.

Will a Fender Strat neck drop in to an SX Strat body ok?
>>
So now that I've got a looper pedal I've started actually playing against backing chord progressions using scales, and I'm trying to mix in different positions etc. I've just been practicing scales by themselves for the most part without actually making music out of them. Any tips for making my playing less boring or repetitive when playing against backing like this? It sounds pretty good at the moment, but I'm not really doing much more than avoiding the wrong notes and playing in some random rythms and stuff w/ occasional slides and bends

Thanks, anon, it's probably the most fun I've had since I started playing guitar a year or so ago, very glad I invested in a looper pedal finally. Was just worried about making it too habitual since it doesn't really feel like it's expanding my playing too much when I'm just sort of using the same techniques etc while playing along.
>>72065826
Eh, I bought one of these things, helps a decent amount at getting all the skin flakes out of strings etc

It should be fairly close, you'll want to get one that doesn't have holes drilled in the back yet. What radius are you thinking of? What mods in general are you planning?

Yeah, but that device thing is kinda handy because it gets under the string and cleans them at the same time as cleaning the fretboard itself, Working under the strings to clean the fretboard usually is a pita

Sounds like you're boxing yourself in from practicing scales, and also aren't connecting your "inner melodic ear" with the guitar as well as you could. Try singing melodies over the progression then try to play them as accurately as possible on the guitar.

Also, find different ways to practice your scales so it's not just going up-and-down with the same rhythm throughout. Play them in sequences and explore different rhythms, including syncopated stuff.

What's the procedure for being in a band where you write all the music? How is the money from gigs split? What do you do if other members want to include their own ideas and they suck?

I got a zoom g3n, it sounds great. If you want to have a whammy, the other versions have that. I used to have the g3x, and it was pretty great besides the amps and distortion. I actually don't use a ton of effects at once so the upgrade made sense for quality distortion. I think if you don't care about the amp models, boss gt100 is the best choice. I don't like the amps they have but the fuzz and overdrives are so realistic it's crazy. GT100 is surprisingly cheap used, so if you're running into a real amp and don't feel the need to have the versatility of switching amps, this is for sure the best choice.

ME80 is just as good sounding, but I don't like the layout. I want to be able to move pedals around in the chain digitally and shit.

What is the safest type of locking nut to install?
I've already seen two guitar necks break at the nut that didn't even have locking nuts, so I know how delicate that part of the neck is.
Should I get a top mount nut with wood screws, a bottom mount with bolts, or a nut that goes behind the original nut and blocks the truss rod opening?
>>
>>72070147
I play metal on my tele fuck off
>>
>>72070222

>>
I've had my main guitar for 10 years now. 5 years ago I changed the electronics a bit. Now I find it's time to tinker with it again because my soldering skills were poor back then and I want to make it more "my own".

Right now it's got two humbuckers, a 3-way blade switch, a tone knob and a volume knob. The pots are push/pull which switches the coils of each pickup between parallel and series. The switch lets me select between neck, bridge and both pickups in parallel. The tone and volume knobs are swapped, i.e. the tone is closer to the pickups and the volume is closer to the jack.

Here are some things I've noticed:
>very rarely use tone pot except for switching neck pickup coils to parallel
>tone pot is in an awkward spot
>almost never use bridge pickup in parallel mode
>almost never use bridge for clean sounds
>for overdriven leads prefer neck pickup on its own with coils in series
>for overdriven rhythms almost always use bridge pickup on its own with coils in series
>for clean sound prefer both pickups in parallel, and sometimes neck on its own
>use neck pickup in parallel and series mode roughly equally as much

What should I do? I'll definitely replace the tone knob with a switch but I'm on the fence as to what each of the three switches should do, and whether I should get a 5-way blade switch to replace the old 3-way one.

Maybe have the new switch change the neck coils between series/parallel, the volume pot push/pull switch as a phase switch? Which coil should I reverse?

Liked him when I was 14
>>
>>72070919
It's all legato, no groove. You need more percussive effects, like muting, staccato playing, chicken pickin' etc

I've been playing for about 6 or so years now and I want to do something kinda weird.
They sell fake guitars on aliexpress: I was thinking of buying something like pic related and having them send me one with a blank headstock and then replacing the electronics with my own.

I figure it would be a good way to learn basic maintenance + get a really unique instrument out of it.

Anyone here buy a fake before?

Good luck. I hope the joint comes out comfy and strong.

I'm curious about these shitty cheap guitars too, doubt anyone on here has ever used one though
>>
>>72071687

>>
>>72071687
I haven't personally done it but a friend has, and the guitar required so much work in the fretboard area that he just gave up
If you keep at it I think it might be worth it as a fun project
