just reminding the weebs that this record isnt just good because its from sunrise land. really an unremarkable record. idk why it pops up on here so much. nothing compared to Poo-Sun by masabumi kikuchi if were gonna talk about japanese fusion records
>>72052988
nip jazz is pretty horrid, it rarely swings and is never in the pocket.
>>72053004
they do well in certain contexts but straight ahead jazz isnt really it. theres a few guys i can think of that are pretty killin at free or fusion but masabumi kikuchi is by far my favorite musician that fat man and little boy ever produced. hes really incredible. whites cant swing the way blacks can, nips cant swing like whites can, and the europeans dont even try.

They're classics for a reason. Start a thread for good obscure albums if you don't wanna see the essentials crop up.
>>72051689
He does have a point in that one could just google for top lists.
>>72054384
When people post classics, there is sometimes genuine and thoughtful discussion of them though. It is kind of uninteresting talking to someone who doesn't "get" A Love Supreme or Kind of Blue for the umpteenth time, but there's other well known albums ITT which aren't quite as discussed to death.
>>72054445
You can google those explanations as well, and get much better stuff than here on /mu/.
What we need is a Quality Anti-Top Jazz Album chart, where we start with all the great albums we know and then remove all the commonly listed ones. A list of good shit free from all the shit that no longer has to be listed.
Anybody heard this yet?
Thoughts?
>>72051446

>>72054479
>You can google those explanations as well, and get much better stuff than here on /mu/.
True, but discussing albums and giving a personal perspective is kinda the fun of discussing music somewhere like this.
Discussing an album with another person in real time is more satisfying than reading an academic dissertation.
That was kinda the advantage to /blindfold/. People posted obscure tracks and got people talking about stuff that never would have been discussed otherwise.
>A list of good shit free from all the shit that no longer has to be listed.
This would be class to see though, just to see the sort of albums that get posted. There are a couple of people on here with phenomenal taste who know a lot of great records off the beaten track.
>>72054638
Be careful my guy, you'll get roasted by contrarians piece of trash expecting you to post some estonian unknown free-jazz on a "God-tier Jazz" thread

>>72054638
This is my favourite Duke Ellington record even though from a semi-objective standpoint, it's kinda bad. I just love how human it is...listening to it in chronological order as it's presented in the Blue note reissue is an experience.
You can sort of trace out the troubled nature of the sessions by the playing. There's some brilliant music on there too, but even the outright bad tracks like A Little Max feel part of the story of the record and by the time I get around Caravan and Money Jungle, I'm always just really invested in the frustrations they were all feeling.
>>72054607
I'm not gonna help or get anything started tonights though, I'm all used up for the day, if not the whole weekend.

Maybe it wouldn't call it a "bad album" but when you consider its a trio of three greatest artists ever, its very mediocre
>>72055292
As my post implies, I'm kinda biased because of how much extra-musical context I'm thinking of when I hear these tracks, but even without all that, I still think some of the better tracks like Money Jungle or African Flower would be some of the most creative and emotionally powerful music these guys or anyone else for that matter ever played.

>>72056682
I'm with you except for
>organ
How can you not get down for some Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, or Dr. Lonnie?
>>72056883
The timbre of the thing in general is kinda a turnoff but the way it's played in jazz has a lot to do with my dislike too. I've heard a lot of cheesy poor quality hard bop records with badly done organ. Often with rampant abuse of long held notes over annoyingly basic harmony. I've heard more fusion stuff I've enjoyed than say, hard or post bop, but otherwise, I think it works way better in art music.
There was a /blindfold/ themed around organ where I enjoyed one or two of the tracks, but nothing enough to interest me in hearing the rest of the records and most of the rest were meh-bad.
>>72056682

Holy fuck yes, this shit is amazing. European jazz from the 60s was so good.
The rhythm section from that session went on to form Guru Guru, a pretty good krautrock band. Their album "Dance of the Flames" is a very nice Mahavishnu Orchestra rip off.

>>72063668
There's nothing wrong with it. Listen to whatever you want, fag. I find /mu/ proper cares more about style than substance and/or listens to boringly simple and shallow music.
If you feel like spreading the gospel of Pharaoh Sanders and BBNG, plz, feel free though. I won't stop you.
>>72063785

Why would I do that? They cross the realm of hip-hop and I don't enjoy that. I don't think there's anything wrong with jazz fusion, that's all.

>>72063852
Yeah, neither do I. I dislike the cheesy 80s and 90s pop crossover/synth driven fusion that birthed smooth jazz. I think it's a pathetic successor to the sort of ground breaking and intense albums that were coming out in the early days of fusion like Bitches Brew or Emergency. Back when it was more like an alternative to free jazz than a commercial enterprise.
It's gotten better in some circles in recent years, but /mu/ approved fusion like bbng, is not good.
>>72063990
>It's gotten better in some circles in recent years, but /mu/ approved fusion like bbng, is not good.
I'm not aware of great modern jazz fusion albums, but I always try to recommend Allan Holdsworth, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Sun Ra, Weather Report, etc. wherever and whenever I can. Could you recommend some newer jazz fusion albums you like?
I feel like I'm the only one who likes this LP
>>72064083
Rudresh Mahanthappa - Gamak
A lot of Dave Holland's recent stuff. Aziza was one of my favourite albums last year.
Wadada Leo Smith can be a bit hit and miss but when he's good, it's great. His playing takes a lot from early 70s Miles too which pushes a lot of my buttons too, but it's often just jams which can be a bit messy and aimless at times. Ten Freedom Summers is a great record, albeit a little overambitious.
They're some pretty straight fusion records, but often where the best fusion music is played, ends up being in ensembles that aren't explicitly playing fusion. People like Chris Potter regularly play post bop with ideas endemic to fusion. Something like Follow the Red Line isn't a fusion record, but there's strong flavours of it there. I think that's a little more what I mean when I say fusion has gotten better. More like, it's found a nice place in modern jazz.
