When did vaporwave stopped being a meme and became an actual genre?
It sold out. The original anonymous wave from 2010-2012 still remains the best and most genuine.

I know people who act like they're into vaporwave and make dumb A E S T H E T I C jokes all the time but have never even heard of Eccojams let alone actually listened to it.

lol no vaporwave is normie
When the meme reached the normies and the joke went over their heads.
>My local record store now has a "vaporwave/future funk" section.

Just ignore the "vaporware" bands pitchfork are reviewing and you'll be fine.

Sounds to me more like an ambient album than a vaporwave.

Vaporwave is one of the silliest things the internet has made for a joke, it amazes me how the normies actually took it as real music
>B-but this music talk to me

eccojams was interesting, but that tupac song just really make vaporwave seem like chopped n screwed music applied to every genre.
>>72045277
That and this album are the only two exceptional vaporwave releases.

Around the time Dream Catalogue started getting big, so mid 2014. Pic related really changed the game.
There is a line between the cheap shit produced in Audacity by 15 year olds in their mothers' basements and the actual, "unironic" music released on DC, Bloody Carpet, Beer on the Rug, etc. So really, it's both a meme and an actual genre, just because a lot of people still don't know anything beyond basic Facebook memes. The fact that most people still consider Macintosh Plus' Floral Shoppe to be representative of an entire style that has grown extremely diverse since 2012 further proves my point.
