The Frankfurt School of Social Theory considers music to be the lowest form of art.
Theodor W. Adorno writes: " Modern music sees absolute oblivion as its goal. It is the surviving message of despair from the shipwrecked."
How do you respond?

It was when a celebrated historian and art critic, a man of European fame, had announced a lecture in the university hall. I had succeeded in persuading the Steppenwolf to attend it, though at first he had little desire to do so. We went together and sat next to each other. When the lecturer ascended the platform and began his address, many of his listeners, who had expected a prophet, were disappointed by his rather spruce and conceited air. And when he proceeded, by way of introduction, to say a few flattering things to the audience, thanking them for their attendance in such numbers, the Steppenwolf threw me a quick look, a look which criticized both the words and entire personality of the speaker -- an unforgettable and frightful look which spoke volumes! It was a look that did not simply criticize the lecturer, annihilating the celebrated man with its crushing yet delicate irony. That was the least of it. It was more sad than ironical; it was indeed utterly and hopelessly sad; it conveyed a quiet despair, born partly of conviction, partly of a mode of thought which had become habitual with him. This despair of his not only unmasked the conceited lecturer and dismissed with its irony the matter at hand, the expectant attitude of the public, the somewhat presumptuous title under which the lecturer announced -- no, the Steppenwolf's look pierced our whole epoch, its whole overwrought activity, the whole surge and strife, the whole vanity, the whole shallow play of opinionated intellectuality. And alas! The look went still deeper, went far below the faults, defects and hopelessness of our time, our intellect, our culture alone. It went right to the heart of humanity, it bespoke eloquently in a single second the whole despair of a thinker, of one who perhaps knew the full worth and meaning of man's life. It said:
"See what monkeys we are! Look, such is man!"

How about you actually read some of their work instead of just making shit up?
>>
literally no one takes adorno's music criticism seriously
>>
>>72045407

First off, literally the only person in the Frankfurt School that wrote about music was Adorno. There was no stance The Frankfurt School took on music's legitimacy as a form of art. Secondly, Adorno did not hate music. In fact, he wrote music himself. He hated what capitalism was turning music into. Also he predicted the modern pop music industry.

Get off your containment echo chamber and read this book.

He hated pop music and jazz. Two trash genres. What's the issue here?
>>
>>72045502
only going to read this book if you read my book
http://alfa-omnia.com/resources/Phenomenology+of+Perception.pdf
echo-chamber? what does that mean, mean, mean, mean, mean, mean, mean, mean, mean.
1) modern pop music is bad
2) pop music is bad because capitalism
3) music is easy to exploit
therefore, music is the lowest form of art
whats not to get ?

>The customers of musical entertainment are themselves objects or, indeed, products of the same mechanisms which determine the production of popular music. Their spare time serves only to reproduce their working capacity. It is a means instead of an end. The power of the process of production extends over the time intervals which on the surface appear to be “free”. They want standardized goods and pseudo-individualization, because their leisure is an escape from work and at the same time is molded after those psychological attitudes to which their workaday world exclusively habituates them. Popular music is for the masses a perpetual bus man’s holiday. Thus, there is justification for speaking of a preestablished harmony today between production and consumption of popular music. The people clamor for what they are going to get anyhow.

>To escape boredom and avoid effort are incompatible — hence the reproduction of the very attitude from which escape is sought. To be sure, the way in which they must work on the assembly line, in the factory, or at office machines denies people any novelty. They seek novelty, but the strain and boredom associated with actual work leads to avoidance of effort in that leisure time which offers the only chance for really new experience. As a substitute, they crave a stimulant. Popular music comes to offer it. Its stimulations are met with the inability to vest effort in the ever-identical.

Adorno was right, OP.

>Pinker is critical of theories about the evolutionary origins of language that argue that linguistic cognition might have evolved from earlier musical cognition. He sees language as being tied primarily to the capacity for logical reasoning, and speculates that human proclivity for music may be a spandrel — a feature not adaptive in its own right, but that has persisted through other traits that are more broadly practical, and thus selected for. In How the Mind Works, Pinker reiterates Immanuel Kant's view that music is not in itself an important cognitive phenomenon, but that it happens to stimulate important auditory and spatio-motor cognitive functions. Pinker compares music to "auditory cheesecake", stating that "As far as biological cause and effect is concerned, music is useless".
