I actually came upon a realization the other day about Video Game OSTs. One could argue that most video game osts are going to be relatively conventional, or at least enough to fit the game. So with these limits, there is a certain artform to making a good video game OST. It must fit the atmosphere of the game, be symbolic in it's composition (scary melodies for scary moments, triumphant melodies for triumphant moments) that sort of thing. It really is an artform, and it's interesting to see different composers approach to these limits. I particularly enjoy the Japanese video game OST composers take on things, especially those old JRPGs, and the actual PHYSICAL limits composing on such a medium would present. And a lot of them STILL made good music.
