The review is the smartest thing they've done. They've had at least a month to sit with it and I think they've handled it right.

It's just not as good as Honeybear, it feels a bit dated too, I think I read that most of the wons were made in 2015, and it feels like it.

The feeling that the songs just blur together and are too sonically similar is really big here too. No doubt that leaving LA is a fantastic piece of work, probably the best song he's ever made with his voice working at the best too.

I get that people find him grating, but that never really transferred to his music before, but it has now. I would have given it an 8.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Pitchfork divides music into four categories: music that is trying to be fun, and music that is trying to be meaningful. They then further divide this into successful and unsuccessful music. They then subtract points if they feel the artist is repeating themselves.

MBDTF got a 10 because they felt it was trying to be and succeeded in being both meaningful and fun while also being a complete break from Kanye's previous work.

A 7.6 in this case means "Father John Misty is trying to be meaningful and he mostly succeeds. However, he is repeating an established formula."

It's infuriating to a lot of people because a guy can release two equally great albums and have the second one get ducked points for being too similar to the one before it.

I kind of agree with the score. I think the album is a 6/7. It has highlights but a lot of the songs are incredibly samey. That being said, the way this review is written IS legitimately concerning. I know this isn't exactly new to pitchfork, but the music really isn't being discussed here, and the lyrical analysis is troubling to say the least. They have to single out the white guy lyric from leaving la as him admitting that he's annoying? I listened to this last night

I loved ILYH and Fear Fun but this was kind of boring. I wanted it to be lighthearted and fun and a bit corny like his old stuff but it takes itself too seriously and mostly all sounds the same. A few very forgettable songs.

I think a 7/10 would be about right
