Can we talk about this guy for a second? Okay, he's probably hitting the bottle and the pipe a little bit too much. Okay, he's borderline incoherent in interviews.
But god damn can he play the shit out of a guitar. New album, meh overall, but the moments when he's on are incendiary. He's got such a distinct style, sloppy as hell but that's part of the charm. His melodies always take unexpected twists, his modulations are on point, his tempo changes are like a bungee jump. Unlike other dime-a-dozen prog metal guitarists playing perfectly on the beat he sounds like he's just having a blast on the guitar.
Anyway, thoughts on this? Mastodon's new album?

I can see where you're coming from though I disagree. I'd say some of the stuff they've come up with could not have been written by either one of those groups (thinking mostly Blood Mountain era). Never been much of a C&C fan for what it's worth.

Your comment about them not playing super fucking tight with programmed drums are why they're so incredible. Same with his sloppy runs, it sounds like zeppelin and has soul to the music. Even with their abundant use of effects it never sounds processed. Hinds is a top 5 modern player, and cold dark place could be aoty if it exists

Brent's the gawd but Brann Dailor is the true virtuoso here. The drumming on this album is some next next level type shit.

Completely agree pretty much op
Brent Hinds has no stylistic peers, and I love that he's part of a metal band but hates metal. It all makes a lot of sense because the way he plays is so unlike anyone in metal or hard rock

Extremely average guitar player however who is painfully sloppy live at best, at worst he completely forgets his parts.
Mastodon is alright.
