The dirt transmitter kicks ass. It's not a natural, "smooth" fuzz. You can kinda get that, especially if you smooth it out with an overdrive after it in the chain, but it's not what the pedal is good at.

It's tons of fun to mess with the bias knob. You can get it to sound like a bit crusher. Gritty, loud and awesome.

It is really loud though, like fuck. You can see where I have the level on it.
>>
>>72006288
Yo, you ever try flatwounds on mandolin? I saw some videos and they sound shockingly similar to rounds on mandolin. I figure less squeeky string noise for free is not too bad.

Also what mandolin is that?

As for the difference between the EQD fuzzes I think that JustNick has a video on them. I think the Dirt Transmitter was his favorite too.

Anybody play an aluminum guitar or bass?

This is a 2007 Electrical Guitar Company Series One. For those unaware, the neck is carved from a single billet of aluminum and runs through to the bridge. The bridge and pickups are attached to it. The body is basically bolted to the neck instead of the other way around, making this the most resonant, alive-feeling guitar I've ever played. The neck is the thinnest I've ever seen. Looks like a fucking sword. It doesn't have a truss rod and will never need one.

The downsides:

Incredibly heavy, with a good amount of neck dive

Incredibly expensive (cheapest models go for $2000 used, MAYBE 1800 if it's beat to shit, with awesome models going for $6,000 new)

But good GOD I love this thing. If you have the means, I highly recommend it

People do it, but it aint fuckin easy. There's a group on FB dedicated to aluminum axes and there's a dude that just made his own neck. There was a guy that started his own neck company called Bastin (or BGC) and he did full guitars too but then gave up. Apparently it's really fucking tough

EGC alnico-pole single coils. The main guy behind the company makes the pickups too. The knobs are 2 volume, 2 tone, one 3-way switch.

It's hard to compare the pickups to Jag or Strat pickups because the neck changes the sound so drastically, but they sound incredible on this. Apparently their humbuckers are really great too. People rarely switch out the pickups on these things.

you don't have to be good on an instrument to play in a band... it just helps to be good and know everything about music

I never have a problem with that, but maybe it's because I knew about it before I got one. Just gotta warm it up before you play or tune! It's really not bad at all.
(painting the neck chrome might look neat but it won't get the sustain from having the whole neck made from aluminum)

I'm sorry but you now have cancer... Seriously though, this is one of the worst/most mean spirited generals in the whole of 4chan.

>>72007329

My tuners are a pain to use (One constatnly flashes F or D until it finally picks up the string, regardless which guitar or sting it is, and the other doesn't pick up anything period sometimes) so I'll admit I only do it before I record. I need to get over it and do it more often or just get another tuner
>>
>>72007386
Learn to tune by ear? Using harmonics makes it really easy and Bretty accurate
>>
>>72007418

Well as long as one string's tuned enough, I know my way around the neck to play the note on another string, even another octave, and tune it by ear. If nothing's in tune, then I just get one string as close as I can by ear and tune the rest from there.

>>72007298

Honestly the thin neck is what I like the most (my hands are fat with short fingers). The sound/feel comes in at a close second. Honestly the stability is just fine (although I haven't toured with it, I do live in the north and shows I've played in the winter haven't been a problem. just gotta warm it up before you get onstage)

The next one I get will be an EGC 30" scale Bass VI (I normally play Bass VI). Gotta save up for a while tho
>>
>>72007176
>>72007272
https://clyp.it/rleyp25i

Not anything revolutionary but I like to make my guitar sound like an old recording by holding the trem down slightly and modulating it while I play. No effects at all. I think it sounds really cool.

Hey guys. I'm trying to figure out the chords for a song. There's a chorus and a verse structure that's repeated 3 times, so all in all it shouldn't be much work. However, I'm having trouble. My ear ain't that good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq4SSlsZ_p0

I think the first line is

Am, Dm, C, E, Am
Two men walked on a beach in the sun
F, C...
One left footprints, the other left none

And I kind of lose it. I wonder if I'm totally wrong about the rest of it, because nothing sounds right. Would anyone mind giving the song a brief listen and letting me know if I'm on the right track?

Before I got an interface and microphones, my dad bought me this bullshit Mustang amp, which is super weird not only because I'm in my fucking 30s, but also because I own a 4x10 Fender Deville and a 59 Bassman LTD and he's seen them. ANYway, I was just planning on returning this dumb little modeling amp when I noticed that it had a USB out. Not only that but you can download other amp models. Not only that but you can switch the cabinets on those amps, or have no cabinet at all. But the best thing was that you can record without a microphone, straight into your computer, listening to the track with headphones and with the amp speaker turned off.
Meaning I could record at my apartment at any time of day.

There's probably wayyy better options out there but jesus christ I was impressed with this cheap fucking thing. I think he got it for $100. And I think you could probably find one for $50 used.

Fuck you can record with a mustang?? My little brother has a mustang 3 in his room. It sounds good recorded through yea?
>>
>>72007903
bass i plug directly to the onboard mic input
guitars i dont do that cause their output impedance is higher and sounds muddy that way. so i either plug them to the actual amp and mic it with a cheap dynamic mic (sm57 copy) or plug it to a bypassed multifx, to normalize the impedance, > computer input

wow

The Mustang comes with free recording software.
>>
>>72008259
>>72008320

I used Garageband for a while and then Logic, so I know it works with those. Honestly it takes a while to dial in a great sound (a lot of the distortion stuff sounds good through the amp but on the recording sounds..."crinkly"?) Just sit there and dick with it until it sounds good. But DEFINITELY download the "Fender Fuse" software or whatever it's called cuz that's where you can really adjust everything. Plus the interface is a whole lot easier than trying to do it with the knobs on the amp
>>
>>72008198

i thought they were cool amps for those exact reasons you liked it but around here theyre priced like handmade tube ampes

Ive written like 20 bass lines with nothing to put them to, so recording couldn't hurt. My guitar playing is really bad so I doubt it will have more than simple riffs, but I'm fairly confident on bass so I'm hoping that will shine through. You have any examples of stuff you've recorded that I can listen to?

My mic placement right now is pic related. Don't even have a stand.

That sounded cool and sounded like old recordings

You can also achieve that effect with a Tape simulator VST that has a "Wow & Flutter" effect, which is what caused that on old recordings

Yeah I've actually been looking into this sort of thing for convenience's sake. A plugin works great for recording but I would also like to get that sound live as well.

There aren't a ton of good options there... Best thing I can find is the el capistan because I can use it for more than just that. Most tape delays don't cut it (pedals not actual). Still searching though. Even stuff like the ZVEX lo-fi junky isn't quite right for me. It just sounds like a weird slow chorus/tremolo.

The main thing with pedal effects is that they are very consistent and tape imperfections are inherently inconsistent.

"better" is a matter of taste, some people like that shrill sound with lots of ringing overtones. The people that buy those guitars think this is the ideal guitar tone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikMB1CKztC4&t=3s
>>
>>72010891
that shrill sound in the vid is not due to guitar its due to amplifier or whatever they did with the guitar signal

The guitar plays a part of it though, as retarded as it sound aluminum neck guitars do have a specific "metallic overtone" type of thing going on. It's only amplified by having a hollowbody aluminum body too.

>>
>>72010080
It shouldn't be too hard unless you're listening to quartal harmony or something.

Listen for the highest note, the melody note. Once you have that, if the chord sounds sad, try the flat third and flat seventh. If the chord sounds funky or bittersweet, try the major third and flat seventh. If it sounds cheery, try the major third and natural seventh. If it sounds mysterious and somewhat dissonant, try the flat third, flat fifth, and flat seventh.

Also when you're listening to a progression, try to keep track of which notes stay the same, and which move from chord to chord.
>>
>>72009889
What the fuck? Are you saying Les Pauls have less resonance, thus less overtones?

Oh, and also learn to play chords and their inversions so you'll have an easier time finding them when you're looking.

Triads:

Major - 3 inversions
Minor - 3 inversions

If you want to get more in depth, also learn Diminished and Augmented triads.

Sevenths:

Major 7th - 4 inversions
Minor 7th - 4 inversions
Dominant 7th - 4 inversions
Half-Diminished - 4 inversions

Drop 3
>>
>>72012362
what does the b mean?
what does drop 3 mean?
>>
>>72012396
The b means "flat."

Drop 3 chords are built by taking the 3rd highest note in a closed position chord and lowering it by an octave.

This is how drop 3 chords get their name, because the 3rd note in a closed position chord has been “dropped.”

Everything in theory gets compared to The Major Scale as a template. The Major Scale is a 7 tone scale and the scale degrees are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

So if a chord is constructed as 1, b3, 5, b7, then you should start with the major scale as a base template and find the 1, 3, 5, and 7. Then lower the 3 and 7 a half-step.

They do break. They're only like 18% stronger than normal strings, although that's enough for most people. I know they wear out like other strings, but I don't know if they sound better for longer. I think the warranty is 90 days.
>>
>>72012727
A triad can be an arpeggio. An arpeggio isn't necessarily a triad.

An arpeggio is the notes of a chord played individually. It doesn't matter if the chord is a C Major Triad, or a Bb Dominant 7 Sharp 5, Flat 9. You find out what the notes are in the chord and stack them alphabetically and play them one at a time.

Is there something easier than to compose metal instrumentals? Actually full songs cause the lyrics part you just put something cheesy about dark themes like death and pain

>pick up a mode or key

I saw that some other anons have been answering this as well and they are also correct. The charts that were posted also have this information kind of.

The chart I have posted here contains the formulas I mentioned. I haven't checked it to see if it's right I just googled it real quick. It might not mean much now depending on how much you know of theory already, but you can use this to make almost every chord you want or could ever want.

I'm going to work with the major scale here.

The formula is some set of numbers 1-7. These correspond to the notes of the key. So say we're doing key of C.

The notes are C, D, E, F, G, A, B.

C is 1, D is 2, E is 3 and so on.

So for a C major chord (Formula 1 3 5) the notes we need are C (the 1), E (the 3), and G (the 5). You then make a chord using those notes. Different ways of arranging these notes are called voicings.

That's the basic idea behind it anyways.
>>
>>72015379
I forgot to mention it's very helpful and encouraged to start this while looking at chord charts too. It's strange to arrange a chord this way at first but you get the hang of how they're supposed to go.
>>
just had a like 8 hour guitar session, because im a neet right now

but i just wondered why im spending my time doing this
sure i could get really good
but why, im not the sort of person to go out and join a band and use this hobby for more than self enjoyment

i just feel empty now

>>
>>72015452
Take a break then. I get tons of self enjoyment from playing, if you aren't getting that you need to stop for a while. If you come back and still don't get anything from it then find something else to do.

that's really cool thanks

however most major chords have more than just three notes, would they just be repeats? for example two C notes?

also how do you make a dominant 13, im sure you can't get 7 different notes on a guitar?
>>
>>72015512
yeah bunkethead has his arcade button like that
>>
>>72015379
>some set of numbers 1-7

Also just realized I didn't touch on anything past 7. 8 is the octave so it is just C again.

Past 7 there are no new notes you are essentially just playing one of the original notes an octave up. This is where you get the rest of the numbers you see up to 13.

I'm very forgetful today...

Yes you are correct that most chords have multiples of notes.

Let's take the C major bar chord for example, that is a very common chord. You can see that we have 6 notes being played. Let's go from the 6th string up to the 1st. The root note is a C. The note on the 5th string is a G. The note on the 4th string is a C again (the octave). The note on the 3rd string is an E. 2nd String is a G and 1st string is another C.

As you can see the only notes we have played are C, E, and G. We just played some of them multiple times at once like you said. This is why you can take notes away and still keep the identity of a chord.

>>72015616
See my post here for an explanation of the dominant 13. You are essentially adding the 2nd, 4th, and 6th notes played up an octave to get the 9th, 11th, and 13th. That might have been confusing, but you can just keep counting up with your notes to 13. From C that would be an A.
>>
>>72015850
so triads are basically just major and minor chords? (or sus2, sus4, or even augmented or dimished)

so are triads just the chords that only need three notes?
but add duplicates, like the C major chord, and it isn't a triad anymore?

Pic related next to my new favorite amp rig: 1973 Sound City 200 Plus into a 1968 Traynor "Big B" 8x10. Sounds Massive
>>
>>72015544
Just checked what you were talking about with the 7 notes in the dominant 13. The chart is wrong, it shouldn't have a 9 or 11 in the formula. At least that's how I was taught. I'm not sure why it was included here. Looks like a mess of a chord.

Like I said, I didn't check to see if it was totally right when I googled it lol.
>>
>>72015975
na that's great it really condenses the ideas of theory for me
>>
>>72015922
Basically. Some chords are triads. It refers to being made of 3 notes. That is inevitably going to be 1 3 5 or something very similar (the sus chords in which the 3 is swapped with a 2 or 4). As soon as you add another note like a 7, it is no longer a triad.

The C major chord is a triad. C Major 7 is not.

>72016044
Dude no problem. Most of this stuff isn't too complicated, music teachers just suck ass most of the time. It takes a long time to gain mastery of the material though. Just having these formulas and playing with them is a great way to sound WAY better really fast.
>>
I've been used to playing acoustic all the time so I normally sit down when I play. I'm trying to play electric standing up with a strap right now, however, and I can't hit the chords. It feels like my wrist position is bad and it hurts the shit out of my hand and also makes me sloppier and a little slower overall.

How can I fix my form? Should I have the guitar a little higher?

Why the fuck are Steve via guitars so expensive?
>>
>>72016210
Yes he does use some triads. Easiest one to spot was an E major chord early on. I totally suck at looking at someone elses playing and going "hey that's G Major 6/9" though. He's mostly using the chords as a baseplate to improv from. Why?
>>
>>72016274
So its good to solo based on chords?
>>
>>72016120
okay finally, can i ask how you would go about figuring a chord by ear? do you find it easy?
>>
>>72016211
Kinda like why Gibson and Fender as so expensive despite being shitty guitars. You're paying for the name
>>
>>72006072
Yes, just restrung my 330 with flatwounds.
>>
>>72016310
If you just play a scale and nothing else, you are going to sound boring. So adding in chords is a good way to change it up and add some pizzazz during a solo. You don't want to just go back and forth awkwardly between chords and notes.

Knowing which notes are in which chord is a great way to streamline that transition in a solo. It makes it much easier to add a melody on top of the bare bones of a chord. or to forego chords completely but keep that tonal identity by only playing the notes of whatever chord you want to evoke. Knowing the intervals is very important.

See example below

>>72007507

This is actually me playing this. It's an example of using chords as a basis for a melody. Not a solo but it's a nice simple example. I play a C major 7 chord and G major 7 chord back and forth. I have my pinky free so I can play a melody over it. The notes I picked are the other notes in the key. So I'm essentially playing a bunch of different chord voicings back to back but it sounds good and I don't have to move more than a single finger to get that sound. This style makes it very easy to transition back and forth between chords and notes for a solo.

The video you linked is basically the same thing but he goes off on more musical tangents before coming back home to a chord.

>>72016339
To be honest I suck at this. I don't do a lot of copying other players so I haven't practiced it enough. That said, every chord has a distinct sound. As you practice them, you'll learn to recognize them. Then it's just a matter of finding the key you're in.

>>
>>72016706
It's basically arpeggios played as triplets over a 4/4 beat. So you could count it as a quick "1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3" accenting the "1" each time. I wouldn't recommend trying to count by 4s because of the sheer repetitiveness of the triplets reinforces the 1-2-3 counting over the drums. It kind of sounds like an attempt to superimpose a 3/4 guitar line over a 4/4 drum part, but idk for sure. I'm not great with analyzing rhythms.
