It seems to me like most of melon's criticisms for the album are for its vocals, and how "cheesy" they are.

While I don't disagree, were the lyrics on their past albums really any less cheesy? I've personally always listened for the instrumentation (and I think they knocked it out of the park in this regard on EoS), so I genuinely don't know.

I personally like 20 point systems the most (rating out of ten with .5 increments). I think there's enough of a difference between, say, a 6 and a 7 that the existence of a 6.5 is justified for me. There's definitely enough stuff I encounter where I feel a 6 is slightly too harsh and a 7 is slightly too generous.

If a decent three is around a 3.4 to a 3.6, then think of it was 34/100 or 36/100. a 6.7/10 is mathematically the same thing as a 67/100. I liked the hunter a lot actually. it was different in that all the members of mastodon seemed to explore their own ideas with help from their bandmates. as a result it was disjointed and didn't have an overarching theme but resulted in a lot of weird shit that I enjoyed (spaced out synths on Bedazzled Fingernails, a whole chorus on Creature Lives, gnarly ass riff on octopus has no friends, etc.) The only reason OMRTS did next to nothing for me is because it simply sounded like a continuation of the Hunter. I liked some of the songs but I felt like they already kind of did it. On this album it seems like they took everything they learned individually on those last two albums and applied it to an album with a shared vision and a common theme.

I think it's p dope.
Far from being one of their better albums but I consider it refreshing after OMRTS's pure meh and the hot shit that was Hunter.
Might buy it come payday.

The drums sounded amazing on the hunter, and EoS has the same producer as they had on Crack the Skye, which is the album this album reminds me of most. Still though, some of it sounds overly compressed.
