Greatest album of all time thread. It must fill these criteria:
>all songs must be good
>innovative for its time

modest mouse - moon and antarctica
brand new- devil and god are raging inside me
modest mouse - this is a long drive
carissa's wierd - ugly but honest
radiohead - amnesiac
Also mayonaise is the best song on siamese dream.

Mayonaise is dope

>all songs must be good
Disarm is easily one of the worst songs of the 90s
>innovative for its time
How delusional do you have to be to actually believe that this typical 90s alt rock with mild shoegaze influence (note that Loveless came out two whole years earlier) was in any way "innovative?"
The idea that Siamese Meme is a good album needs to fucking crawl into a hole and die.
>>71922150
low quality bait
Everyone loves Siamese Dream, my nigga
>>71921556
I'd say LCW over long drive
John Frusciante - Shadows Collide with People
REM - Murmur
QOTSA - Era Vulgaris (unpopular opinion ik)
>>71922325
Literally not bait, that's my true honest opinion.
Even if you like the album though, you should at least be able to admit that in no way is it "innovative."
>>71922364
I personally think that Billy Corgan was better at layering and mixing guitars than Kevin Shields ever was
>>71922396
Kevins guitars are put under so many swirling layers of masterful effects that are balanced perfectly and create a sound literally unlike any other in rock. Corgan hits a big muff plugged into a tube amp and calls it a day.
Regardless, whoever did it "better" is irrelevant. The main point is that Kevin did it first. Siamese Dream was not innovative whatsoever.
>>71922465
It doesn't matter who did it first, it matters who did it better.
Don't get me wrong, I love Loveless, but Corgan was able to make an album that didn't just have vacuum noises throughout.
>>71922495
>all songs are good
Nah, all alone is fucking trash. In fact theres a stretch of mediocre songs right through the middle of this album, between El Manana and Dare.
>innovative for its time
You're not even trying now you fucking retard.
This Reddit album full of 14 year old anthems is so fucking overrated it hurts.
>>71922520
What? My point of contention was that it wasnt innovative. So saying "It doesn't matter who did it first, it matters who did it better" is fucking bullshit.
Kevin was innovative. Corgan ripped him off. End of story. Smashing Pumpkins are demonstrably not innovative.
Gotchu
>>71922150
>Disarm is easily one of the worst songs of the 90s
You take that back right now.
>>71922623
Ok then, what about Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins? It came out before Loveless, so is it therefore innovative?
>>71922150
>>71922597
(You)
>>71922890
Have you even listened to Gish? It's nowhere near as shoegaze influenced as Siamese Dream, it's basically just a grunge album with some mild psychedelic elements thrown in. It was more influenced by Mudhoney than anything.
Regardless, this is irrelevant. You keep changing the subject. I will take this as you accepting the fact that Siamese Dream is not an innovative album, which was the original point which I have been arguing this entire time, despite your repeated attempts to derail me.
>>71922996
Damn dude, sheesh, you win.
But in your original post you mentioned that it is shit, which I was trying to say is objectionally wrong.
>>71922364
t bh I dont consider it innovative, I just really like it
>>71922996
this anon is right
SD is *unique* in many aspects, but it is not innovative (very little music is). kids on /mu/ seem to have trouble distinguishing between those two labels
>>71922817
i love the album but he's kinda right about that too, at least in regards to the album version. i vastly prefer its earphoria counterpart
>>71922623
"rip off" is a strong word
>>71923225
I get that the bells and strings in the studio version are a little over-the-top and Billy's voice is kinda grating, but that song just holds so much sentimental value for me seeing as how it was pretty much the soundtrack to my teen angst. The Pinkpop version is the best version IMO.
Primus - Frizzle Fry
>>71922150
siamese dream is a very good album but not great. I do enjoy every track on it though.
>>71922344
Shadows collide is a great album. John's solo work should get more recognition on /mu/

>Regardless, this is irrelevant. You keep changing the subject. I will take this as you accepting the fact that Siamese Dream is not an innovative album, which was the original point which I have been arguing this entire time, despite your repeated attempts to derail me.
Dude did you know that both albums use POWER CHORDS, and MAJOR and MINOR chords, and GUITARS, and DRUMS???
THE BEATLES DID THAT DECADES BEFORE.
NEITHER ONE IS ORIGINAL.
OH MY GOD.
MIND BLOWN.
Stop being a twat. Siamese Dream blew everyone's mind when it came out, myself included. My Bloody Valentine is generally unlistenable for lacking hooks or any memorable songwriting.
That's like saying Nirvana ripped off the Pixies, etc. Nirvana was way heavier than the Pixies and actually had songs people wanted to sing along to.
You don't have to be the first one to ever do something at all to be innovative.
All innovation is incremental.
Geek USA is the best song.
Fight me bro
>>71921500
I feel like if Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was more quality > quantity it'd be better than siamese dream.
>>71925822
a personal favorite, definitely rocks the hardest on the album and JCs drums fucking killin it. Corgan averred that it was more like the Gish sound than SD. A great way to start side 2.
>>71921500
this is just a bunch of shit shoegaze/dream pop already did but more accessible.

Laughing Stock is a cohesive concept album. In first person the lyrics bring you through a man's death all the way through his salvation and acceptance into heaven, and the last song is from God's perspective to the man giving him love and forgiveness. It's the most well done story I've ever seen in an album.
Musically, it combined jazz, rock elements, classical, and minimalism to create a beautiful, unique sound. The songs are amazing, and in Laughing Stock's wake it left a massive mark on a new genre.
>>71925724
This is the most obnoxious post I've ever seen on this entire board. You're way too fucking old to be typing like a snotty kid. No wonder you'll defend the tears in my diary angst anthems of Siamese Dream.
>My Bloody Valentine is generally unlistenable for lacking hooks or any memorable songwriting.
Got an honest laugh from this one.
>That's like saying Nirvana ripped off the Pixies, etc. Nirvana was way heavier than the Pixies and actually had songs people wanted to sing along to.
Nirvana DID rip off the Pixies, Kurt would even cop to that. Just because you say they did it slightly heavier (as if the Pixies didn't have plenty of heavy songs) does not mean shit. Mudhoney were equally as heavy as Nirvana (and followed the same basic song structure formula) and they came before, and they were basically just ripping off the Stooges who were the true innovators. Siamese Dream demonstrably wasn't innovative because you can trace the ideas it uses very clearly back through rock history. Was it a good album? Lots of people seem to think so and if you agree then that's all good. Was it innovative? Demonstrably not.
>You don't have to be the first one to ever do something at all to be innovative.
This is where I start to think this post might be bait. The definition of innovating is to introduce new ideas that haven't been done before i.e. to be the first to use these new ideas.
You're fucking retarded.

1973? I thought it was, like, 2003 when I first listened to it, all digital sampling and stuff. I could not believe one guy recorded this alone in his basement in the early '70s. What a wonderful world we live in.
Examine it honestly and give me a reason why it isn't. Best stripper music.
The stories are as great as the music. "The words will come again, but not to me." - lyrisist and former acid testee Robert Hunter

>Arrive at ER. Policeman becomes brother-in-law. Nurse is Sally Field. She says "Anon, are you okay? Your pupils are the size of saucers."

WHEN I CAN
>>71922150
It's a great album, but you are fucking right that it isn't innovative. It isn't innovative for shit. People should be more aware of that. It blatantly cobbles a bunch of shit, things that were trendy and stylistically calculated. But that doesn't make it bad music to me, it uses those elements amazingly, it's just not innovative.

All songs good? Yeah I'd agree, I could see a lot of people disagreeing with you tho
Innovative for its time? No not really at all. All it did was bring blending genres to the mainstream. Trip hop isn't innovative in 2005.

>Nirvana innovated by taking what the Pixies did and making it heavier and hookier.
Nirvana took the formula of the Pixies songwriting. They took the idea of making it heavier from other bands in their scene such as the Melvins. Where is the new idea here? seriously, name one new idea Nirvana brought to the table. You can't. Nirvana sounds nearly identical to Mudhoney except with way cleaner production. They did not innovate. They did not bring any new ideas to rock music or put anything in their music that essentially hadn't been done before somewhere else.
>It's not like The Pixies were the first band to use distortion and power chords.
Correct. The Pixies did not innovate distortion and power chords. They did innovate however with certain songwriting techniques that had never really been done before (especially in regards to their use of dynamic contrasts in their songwriting).
