He was probably referring to the period where he released Honest which was actually somewhat closer to his current sound. I'd rather just hear him rap on his current songs. Instead of a nauseating mix of half rap half singing. in 2012 he could put out a great rap song like same damn time and then a melodic song like turn on the lights and they would both be good.
