This seems to be mostly a criticism of the church, and priests, rather than music with Biblical themes. Is it supposed to also be a criticism of salvation through works? It's a nice song, but not really what I'm looking for.

jesus and the afterlife are both biblical so I think I was in the right to autism it into the thread but yes it's more about organized religion than the bible
"fun" fact it's the origin of the phrase "pie in the sky"

if you can handle some patrician freakfolk/avant garde
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moFpgCz33dU
its about the end of the world, sin, plagues, nukes, etc and the messiah returning as best I can tell

This might be a bit too patrician for me, but I don't understand how it could reference plagues and nukes, etc. if it's supposed to be about the rapture. That would set it in a specific time, which any respectable theologian would easily discredit, with stuff like Matthew 24 for example.
Had the musicians who wrote this read any theology, or even just the Bible? Or did they feel capable to handle the subject matter anyway?

Since no one posted the obvious yet - Bob Dylan and Nick Cave. Nick Cave often uses Bible verses as a lyrical method and he's not religious anymore.

I don't think that's inaccessible really. Vocals are pleasant and almost angelic at times.
