The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of thoughts.

why are all the trips i dont like winning in my tourney ugh

>Darklands (Scotland / England)
>PiL - Meal Box
a big step up from first edition, this is one hour of fun post punk experimental rock that dabbles with electronics sometimes. Albatross is amazing, sadly none of the tracks seem to be as well made or hit that level of goodness again. i guess its because the rest go towards the more wanky side of things, which is okay but not as great. this is so much better than the sex pistols, idk why this is the less popular lydon project.

this creates a weird dynamic
if yamir wants you to leave, he must let FISH win, and we all know their history
at the same time, it's very possible that yamir wants you to leave more than he cares about fish winning his tourney (unlikely)

i keep forgetting to post this

Cool Struttin' was fun, but simple

Something Else was pretty boring which was disappointing considering that lineup. Quite uneventful and I feel like there is nothing here that stands out from hundreds of other jazz albums out there

The Sermon was great, the organ complimented all the other players so wonderfully throughout. I wasn't expecting to like soul jazz, but this was p good

Moanin' didn't wow me on first listen, might have to revisit eventually. The drumming was great ofc.

>Paysage d'Hiver - Paysage d'Hiver

God this was amazing. I love how all the instrumentation seemed to melt together in this sort of stormy bleakness. Lo-fi worked perfect here, as did the vocals that clouded over in the background with the instrumentation. The keyboards that showed up were incredible. I teared up during the first track, the whole thing was jaw dropping. I wish I didn't suck at reviews so I could better articulate how much I loved this.

5/5
>Mayhem - De mysteriis dom Sathanas

Grew on me as the album progressed. The drums were perfectly evil, but I wasn't a huge fan of the vocals at parts.

>Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.

The Heart Pt. IV had my hopes up. It had a nice ass beat, disses to Big Sean, Drake and KD and had a Big Pub reference, what more could I want?

What I want is for Kendrick to stop doing whatever this shit is.

A bit of a hot take here, but this isn't even commercial to me. This beat is definitely reminiscent of an early 2000's/late 90's Southern Hip Hop style which is without a doubt not big in 2017, and it's just fucking weak.

His flow, the best part about Kendrick, is just okay. Just okay. Not something I thought I would use to describe him, it was always at least interesting.

Lyrics are nice, but it can't save this track.

>Jimmy Jazz (Poland / Czechia)
>Lukáš Grygar - Láska Bystrouška
subtle and beautiful czechian singer songwriter music, very heavy on the piano and uncommon chords. some of my favorite moments were the first tracks (especially the intro, which was basically steve reich on flute, which it had lasted a little more than a few seconds). there's also a lot of varied instrumentation, from drums to violins to flutes to a tinny sounding vibraphone? (or something from the xylophone family). as for the lyrics i dont know what he's saying who the fuck even speaks czech lol but im sure he put some effort into it or something you can feel it from the emotions he puts into singing. he has a great voice that's very fit for this kind of music. it's a cute little comfy album that i'll definitely be checking out again, my only real complaint is the tracks are really short and it can get a little bit weak in the middle of the album.

Lou Harrison - Serenado (Performed by David Tatenbaum)
>Classical, Gamelan

What new age wishes it was. This recording contains the exploratory guitar compositions of Lou Harrison spanning 50 years, and landing somewhere between hindustani classical and gamelan. The album is evidently centered around the guitar, but percussive elements are frequently supplemented in, including water bowls, finger cymbals sistra and drums; and a second guitarist accompanies for the closing track finale. David Tandenbaum showcases his effortless playing in 19 short tracks that seem to blend together as one, despite the long compositional span. The choice of steel guitar adds an air of openness to the recording, and really accentuates the player’s finesse. The delicate guitar playing puts you in a strong headspace despite being anything but simplistic or repetitive as many albums with similar scope fall back on. The passages here are about the journey, with no real starting state or destination; it’s the musical equivalent of lying in a canoe and letting the tide take you away. Great stuff.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares

Very nice choral work, and notably great recording quality considering the circumstances. Suprisingly doesn't get exhaustive and actually seems to get better as the record goes on. Sounds like a timepiece from the middle ages or something. Interesting and intriguing, with some stellar harmony and melody lines. Great compilation.

triangle cubed recs:
>John Fahey - The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick
This is a great showcase of Fahey's skills while also being deep and personal. These songs are hypnotic, emotional, and technical all at the same time. I don't have much to complain about music-wise. Hot take incoming: Fahey's ramblings and jokes aren't really that cute or charming, they just come off as annoying and they awkwardly break up the flow in the music (as Zappa once said: Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar).
8

some random trip recs:
>Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma
Pretty cool noise; this wasn't nearly as harsh as I was expecting it to be though. "The Inferno" is the highlight here; while it takes a bit too long to get going, once it does it's pretty glorious. The latter half of that track is something else. The other behemoth track is good too, but at times I just felt a little underwhelmed by the lack of variance in the 19 minute run time. Still very good as a noise album; one that doesn't beat you to death, but still SOUNDS like death.

Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi
>Jazz-Funk, Avant-Garde Jazz
I'm still tired and sick so this will be quick.
p funky and groovy, I liked it a lot. First song was especially great, almost a little kraut-y in how it kind of built and grew around one single monotonous groove.
I enjoyed the drumming on this quite a bit, and there were a lot of great synth tones & keyboards.

Animal Collective - People (2007)
>neo-psychedelia, experimental rock

Very obviously a companion to Feels, but lacking a lot of the characteristics that make Feels as good as it is. The title track (the studio version only, mind you) is a solid track, filled with Deakin's delayed guitar and Avey's yelped vocals, but it tries to hard to recapture the magic of it's parent album without the spark and sheer sense of childhood wonder. The other three tracks are okay, but really non-offensive and boring, which is something that AnCo really should never be.

2.0

Priests - Nothing Feels Natural (2017)
>post-punk

Pretty cool, shockingly enough. It's a lot more experimental than I thought it would be, and it's completely removed from "post-punk revival", in sound and execution it's practically a classic post-punk album. This might be a positive, but it also leads to the more standard-sounding songs coming off as really derivative, and it definitely doesn't help that some of the experimental tracks try way too hard to be weird. It also lacks a lot of originality and personality, but the solid songs and the nice, dark no wave elements mostly make up for that.

2.5-

Brave Little Abacus - Okumay (2012)
>midwest emo

Better than Just Got Back From the Discomfort..., for my money at least. I didn't expect much from the pretty generic beginning of the first track, filled with some typical midwest emo characteristics, but by the end of the track and especially by the second tracks it explodes into the most beautiful emo cacophany I've ever heard. It's sometimes far too busy, but the synths and chiptunes are integrated incredibly to the midwest emo song structures. It's one of the most inventive emo releases I've ever heard, and it's shockingly enjoyable.

Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi (1971)
>jazz fusion

Herbie's career trajectory fucking confuses me. He started off as a pretty standard Blue Note bop artist, went into batshit insane fusion after playing with Miles, got his first major taste of commercial success with some awesomely cheesy jazz-funk, experimented with electro/turntablism and had a huge hit, and now he seems perfectly content with making some Grammy-winning vocal jazz with obscene amounts of guest vocalists. From what I've heard I think I'll stick with his batshit fusion phase as my favorite. The first track here is fucking insane, every performer is on the top of their game and the slow-burning groove of the whole track is infectious. It's totally off-the-wall and experimental but it's rooted in this really dirty, repetitive groove, it's an awesome track. The remaining two tracks are too meandering for their own good, and they lack the sprawling immediacy of the first track, but they're still nicely groovy in their own right. Their grooves just take a bit more time to reveal themselves and they're kinda hidden under layers of soundscaping. Damn cool record, gotta check out Crossings and Sextant.

The Magnetic Fields - Holiday (1994)
>indie pop, synthpop

I still think that Susan Anway is a better fit for this sound than Merritt himself, frankly. The vocals might be this album's weakest point, but pretty much everything else is great. It has such an idiosyncratic sound, it experiments with so many different styles of synthpop, ranging from incredibly upbeat chiptune to very abrasive, noisy synthwork. Oftentimes the record can sound a bit too cheap, something that Distant Plastic Trees / The Wayward Bus avoids, but the songwriting shines through even the cheapest synths, and the synths totally have an incredible charm to them. Don't overlook this.

3.0+

Beach House - Devotion (2008)
>dream pop, indie pop

This sure is a Beach House record. They got better as their arrangements got fuller (Teen Dream is a good record, fight me) but they're probably at their comfiest here. Doesn't mean they're at their best, it's comfy but it's incredibly monotonous, especially with Scally's guitar work, and the songwriting is definitely not all that great, the best track here being a Daniel Johnston cover. The opener is real good though, mainly because the Hawaiian-influenced guitar is really nice. Fits this chart perfectly, doesn't do much else to impress.

Joyce Manor - Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired (2012)
>pop punk, indie rock

This band's debut is a charming little pop punk album filled with catchy hooks and crunchy guitar hooks. This is one of the most worthless records I've ever heard. Not a single second of it presents anything interesting or enjoyable to the listener, it's horribly derivative of thousands of other bands that do this style better, it's really thin-sounding, the best song is a bad cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star", the forays away from pop punk are terrible, the pop punk is even worse, it's just a really fucking bad album. The only good thing about it is that it's short, and 13 minutes might even be pushing it.

Yeah, Herbie's career has been all over the place but I think it shows he's been doing a great job at adapting to jazz as it changes.

If you haven't checked out Sextant, I'd definitely recommend it. It's right in the middle of his funk and weirded out fusion period so it's a very interesting listen imo. Thrust is also tight if you liked Head Hunters

Long time no see. I got in a funk for a while with music where my desire to listen to new things really stagnated and I didn't even feel like listening to old favorites.

So I blew a bunch of money finally getting a turntable and records. It feels nice to finally own music after being exclusively a digital piratescum for the past decade or so.

Received A Crow Looked at Me today in the mail, listened to it, got very sad, so now I'm listening to Ágætis byrjun for comfort. Ignore the fact that I've already literally run out of space after collecting for two months. I have a 2x2 kallax on the way.

wew what mess of bandcampcore elements. it's pretty much a made for /mu/ bandcamp album: lo-fi, indeh, reverb'd to FUCK vocals, beach boys influenced melodies, mediocre singer, fuzzy guitar, and noise. it does feel kinda genuine tho (and it probably is), so it's not a pain in the ass to sit through. a lot of times it sounds like the vocals were recorded really badly cause she seems to (forgive my terrible english explanation its my second language) like, max out the microphone's recording volume? like when you record something too loud and it turns into fuzzy incomprehensible noise? something like that, and it's kinda annoying how much it happens and how they simply mask it with reverb. this was probably intentional too so i'll stop complaining. as for good elements of this, it's a fairly serviceable collection of indeh songs, the noise tracks didn't do anything for me but the last three songs were quite enjoyable.

also it was like 4 in the morning or something when i listened to this and i had autoplay turned on on my ipod and i didnt realize the album was over until 3 minutes into some video of drunk fahey when he started playing guitar and i dont know what that says about me or the album

God, it's Friday night and I'm bored as.

I'm getting a bit bored of university routines now, it's not even remotely new and exciting anymore, and that's really grating. I need something fresh to spice up my life again, because the last year or so was the best time of my life so far, but I'm falling back into not-quite-so-great again.

On the upside, I received today the stack of DSM-5s I ordered from Amazon a bit back. It's fairly obvious they're cheap copies, not the real deal, but as long as the text inside is the same I'm fine with it. Didn't attend class today, figured it'll be fine because we're basically just going through the diagnostic criteria for select disorders, I can read that on my own and we get to bring the DSM to the exam anyway.

Unless I find better entertainment, I might just stay here to shitpost all evening.

Still didn't buy that book, and I'm a bit low on money this month since I bought a bike and a dishwasher. Might read Dune, since I started with a few pages just the other day. Really though, I ought to study, but I don't feel like it right now.

I finally got the grade for my sociology essay last night, and I got literally the lowest passing grade. Makes me pretty mad, because I thought it was a fairly decent essay considering the framework I had to work within, and I feel like I deserved at least a C. Especially considering that when I handed it in first time, the teacher said it's good and I've applied good sociological theories and analysis, it just needed to be a little bit longer.

Also I got a B in developmental psych II, where everyone else got an A, even though I was absolutely a lot fucking better with my presentation than most others were.

Fuck everything.

>I can't think of a more needless expense for a college student, what's wrong with ol' soap and water?
It creates a lot of friction in my relationship, since my partner doesn't do her dishes like she should and gets really upset every time I point it out. I'd rather just buy a dishwasher.

>D's get degrees my dude, I found I'm a much happier student after I banned myself from complaining about grades.
True, and I've been studying on that principle since semester one apart from classes I'm particularly interested in, I just feel like it's really unfair when I put some effort into this and was actually satisfied with what I handed in. I emailed the teacher asking him to motivate the grading, because I feel like I deserve higher than some of my classmates who got Bs. If he says "Nah" I'm not gonna bother taking it any higher, but I will be bitter.

idk i mean what was the point of the plot? to introduce vamp to his harem one by one and give each of them some quirks/nicknames, it's subordinate to the fanservice. or the long-ass stilted kind of conversations, i guess it's pretty much just pulp fiction
from what i've seen & heard the characters are weirdly inconsistent between different novels, and imo they're pretty uninteresting, it's just the style of the dialogue that makes them. designs are consistently whatever too
it definitely seems like a "moments" show rather than about any kind of story and i've been thinking maybe i should watch some more of it because that aligns with my music taste actually. didnt like the couple nise eps iv seen much either so fuck'd i know

mahmoud ahmed delivers some seriously passionate vocals on this album, and i really enjoy the jazz/funk/soul influences. this album has a kind of cryptic, dark feel to it, which i really enjoyed. i do wish i liked this more than i currently do, though. ill probably love this on further listens
3.0+
>Chico Buarque - Construcao
for some reason, i wasnt expecting this album to be as serious and hardhitting as it is. rym tags this as political, so id love to know what buarque is saying on all of these songs. the highlight is easily the title track, which is a lot more laid back, but has some really great horns and strings backing it up.

Theo Burt - Gloss
>Minimalism, Prog Electronic
Like Steve Reich, but looping synths instead of voices or actual instruments. Like Arca without soul. Like Lotic without punch.

Listen to any track, and you know what you're getting for the rest of the album. It has its moments, like in Tracks 6 (my favorite) and 4, but not enough to sustain itself. Perhaps if I had heard this album before the others in the chart, I might have enjoyed it a bit more for what it was.

Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Company
>Alt Country, Folk

I’ve dug everything I’ve heard by Songs Ohia/Jason Molina but hearing him go even more country was really a treat. His voice compliments country exceptionally well and the songwriting is on par, if not better than his previous albums. I still think I may like The Lioness slightly more than this release but it’s still a damn good album.

4/5

Judas Priest - Painkiller
>Heavy Metal, Speed Metal

Not sure how to feel here, very similar reaction as I had to Number of the Beast. There’s some gnarly riffs, sweet guitar work and cool drumming. It certainly has some fantastic moments, especially on the title track and “Between the Hammer and Anvil”. Didn’t love the singing style though and something about this felt a bit too dated and cheesy for me - but maybe that’s b/c I’m not heavy into metal. Feels too 80s at moments, if that makes sense.

2.5/5

Zion I - Mind Over Matter
>West Coast Hip-Hop, Conscious Hip-Hop

Oh dude, this is exactly what I was looking for in Bay area hip-hop. The production from Amp Live is ridiculously entertaining - with jazzy beats, nice record scratching and all sorts of East coast influence. Tracks like “Mysterious Wayz” scream Neptunes influence, with off-kilter percussion, flute sampling and an overall exotic feel. “Elevation” even manages to blend in some drum n bass production, which meshes shockingly well on a mellower cut. There’s a fair amount of electronic influence on the production too, without it sounding too poppy. The production floats around in this weird ambient haze, it’s superb. Both guys are great rappers as well, even though some of the political/philosophical material can come off as a bit awkward at times.

Hard to believe these are the same guys that made “Coastin” - this is something else all together. It’s 22 tracks but feels like it deserves the long runtime, most of these tracks are at least above average imo.

interesting, but badly organized. first two tracks are decent slightly good post-rock stuff, ya know kinda tiring but its alright. then Dans ses cheveux soixantes circuits kicks in, and it's a 2~ second riff played on for almost 18 minutes. it feels like it never ends but it's that good kind of never ending, like a drone album. great behemoth of a track, you'll love it if you liked the seer or the glowing man. bibi a nice was nice, if only i didnt have to wait through four minutes of static to get to the real song and then to have it awkwardly chopped off, and then start another riff for some reason, but both bits were fantastic so i'll let it slide. now, the closer is simply beautiful. fantastic riff, amazing drumming, bass on point, and towards the last minute a voice shows up and starts oohing a melody. that was the biggest highlight of the album and definitely worth checking out just for this.

Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble - Officium
>Gregorian Chants, ''''''''jazz''''''', ECM '''''''jazz''''''''

The opposite of jazz. Rather than having each instrument section as it’s own focal point, interacting with the other musicians, you have essentially two barely coordinating background parts strung together loosely. It’s as though two jazz musicians are comping (one happening to be playing the ‘choir’) throughout the entire set for a star musician that didn’t show at the studio that day, and they released the album anyways. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s good because it’s not. If you think it’s good, you’re wrong. It’s not good.
It's also not terrible though, because it takes no risks and tows the EXACT same line the entire runtime. If you're looking for this kind of excitement in your life just go to church fαm.

Bruce Haack - The Way-Out Record for Children
>Children's Music, Avant-garde, Electronic, Tape Manipulation

Welp, here I am. Curiosity got the better of me.

This thing must have churned out quite a few nihilists in the 60’s. The instrumental passages could easily be Residents outtakes, and don’t hold back on experimentation at all; frequently reaching Stockhausen and Cage levels of experimentation. Unfortunately the skits, instructions, teaching moments and nursery tales detract from the listening experience, which I suppose itn’t a valid critisism considering the scope of the album. I hadn’t considered that children’s music was a venue to explore dense early electronic and tape manipulation music, but I suppose young nimble minds allow for a lack of familiarity with musical norms; especially if they’re wacky and futuristic. Although I’m giving it a 6.5/10, it’s probably the dopest 6.5 I’ve given and is absolutely listening to once. I fucking want this LP, man.

6.5 /10

Yeah fuck it I'm giving it a 7.0, I'm probably going to listen to it like 10 more times this week

first reply picks what I spin tonight

also I didn't post my records last night and I've been too lazy to fill out discogs/rym. I have another shelf but it's mostly stuff from my father-in-law that I want to check out but don't really love it already like some stuff I got from him (Hot Rats, ITCOTCK, etc)
>>
>>71907677
Spin that L'Amour! It's such a good record.

Ah pick another, I've listened to it probably eight or nine times since I got it a week ago. I already loved it and LITA was out of stock so I had to pay $35 on discogs. :<
>>
>>71907721
o no! Do Pet Sounds instead.

btw, Marcos Valle's Garra is on sale for like 9 bucks on LITA's store. Solid stuff!
>>
>>71907257
lmao I don't know if you noticed but on Accents the guy missed a clap on the sets of 7 at around the 1:57 mark. You'd think they'd notice something like that.
This shit is bizarre.
>>
>>71907757
Yep, I caught that too. It's a creative decision goddammit.
>>
>>71906950
Bruce Haack actually was a pretty innovative pioneer in electronic-driven pop music, shame it was all kind of marred by kiddy-aesthetics

The Electronic Record for Children is p good as well
>>
>>71907799
Just finished it. It's certainly interesting as a relic of early electronic music experimentation, but musically there's not much worthwhile imo. And the spoken word parts (the majority of the record) were a slog to get through. One part I did quite enjoy was the tape loops on "Tools". I'd probably enjoy this album more on some drugs.

VA - Country Blues Collector's Items
Kind of a hodge-podge of different obscure artists. No real theme or connection between the artists other than the fact that they are lesser-known and pre-war.
Pretty good for the most part, a few piano blues that I wasn't too hyped on. Other than that it was pretty standard fare when it comes to early blues.
Lewis Black was the big standout for me, all his songs had some pretty sweet slide on it, and they were definitely the most emotionally powerful.

>Ulver - Bergtatt: Et eeventyr i 5 capitler

I liked Nattens madrigal better. I always feel like those folky vocals are cheesy, which they were here. However, it was still good, and the pure BM parts of it were awesome

3.5/5
>Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

Very impressive for `94. Enjoyable, but not amazing or anything.

Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
>East Coast Hip-Hop, Jazz Rap
This is my kind of party record. It's got great snappy drums and fun, repetitive loops you can really get down to. The sampling itself is really good, it's kind of what I'd like my own music to sound like. They basically exhaust a loop by squeezing as much as they can out of it, which isn't a bad thing. But it does mean on the less memorable tracks there's more of a chance of it getting dull.
All the MC's flows are really tight and super on time. I have to admit I didn't pay too much attention to the lyrics. What I did catch was mostly just kind of typical, boastful party stuff. They definitely have to good lines in there but nothing amazingly captivating.

very good album to end off on, I really enjoyed this chart.
looking forward to the next one!

>not much atmo left in the chart

Well, you should still have fun anyway. Thanks for (unintentionally) picking my second spin.
>>
>>71909186
I'm sure some non-atmo ones will be able to make that push across the 3.5-4.0 boundary.. even if not I'll still enjoy myself

And you're welcome
