Is there even such a thing as a rap/hip hop artist who makes songs that are instrumentally interesting, aren't mumbly or have an annoying voice, and talk about something other than the usual shit rappers are known for talking about, i.e. "the game" or "bitches and hoes and my dick is 10 inches long" or crime, or drugs, or the usual shit that knee-grows are known for rapping about?
I really want to give these generas are a fair chance, but most everything I've heard so far hasn't been that great (No, Kanye is not good), and I'm starting to uniroincally become that "only thing I don't like is rap and country" type of guy.
Examples of what I would consider good instrumentation would be 2pac's "California Love" or DMX's "Where the Hood at" or Glue70 in general

One thing to understand is that many rappers who praise those things you think are bad are doing it ironically. Kendrick might sound at first like he's talking about gangsta life or Chance might sound like he's talking about drugs or Earl might sound like he's talking about fucking bitches, but each one of them is going for a deeper concept.
>>
>>71878123
I hear that a lot, and I can appreciate the idea to an extent, but that still doesn't help the fact that I just get sick of hearing the same shit from every single rapper; ironically or not. Not to mention I never can really tell who is trying to be deep in any sense and who isn't
>>
>>71877948
Have you tried MF DOOM? Madvillainy is a pretty good album.
>>

Just seems played out senpai.

Outkast, obviously.

Uplifting hip-hop? That's something I think I can really get behind... Thanks for this, this is some real feel good shit.
>>71878504
Pretty good so far, I really like the piano on Raid, I think it was. Guess this really highlights my biggest problem with rap/hip-hop tho: there's such a big focus on the lyrics but I just can't understand what they're saying most of the time. Sure I could go look up lyrics but that would never be the same as hearing them in the moment. It doesn't help that his voice isn't all that pleasant on it's own. It sucks that a genera filled with people who want to mainly convey a message happens to also be filled with people who don't speak super clearly, and also speak really fast sometimes. Sure it can sound cool, but it's a bit of a deal breaker with me. Guess I need to just stick to instrumentals

try listening to kanye west again

So I guess you should check out backpacked/conscious shit then, like most things on Rhymesayers label. EVIDENCE is my fav

Eyedea is easier to follow I think

I don't know much about Atmosphere but he doesn't stick to the usual rap themes

Most of the stuff that doesn't talk about what you're saying is usually backpack-ish or for hipsters. Check out MF Doom, Aesop Rock, or basically any experimental outfit from the 2000s.
>>
Eminem post-relapse is pretty goat and raps about non-boring issues check em out. Recovery is my favorite
>>
>>71877948
Early Public Enemy. I haven't heard their later stuff and don't listen to a lot of hip hop, but albums 2, 3 and 4 are great.
>>
>>71880304
That first one is definitely easier to follow, but the instrumentation makes me want to gouge my ears out.
The second one was nice tho, thank you

I do in fact recognize this. Now question is, what's some more stuff like this that HAS rap but also has normal singing, and as much focus on actual music as this, not just some drone or simple beat while some guy raps?
Call me a fag if you feel like, but the only other bands that are like this that come to mind off the top of my head are le ebin 21 pilots and P.O.D. Not saying they sound alike, but that they incorporate rap and normal singing with pop/rock like instrumentation.

This falls into the field of "rappers talking about usual rapper shit", but the guy has a decent voice, and the instrumental is pretty fly, not bad.
>>71883357
This is pretty tight, but I can't take the lyrics seriously when he literately says shit like "THE MINIMUM WAGE IS TOO LOW". All I can think of is those min wage patty flippers in California who were replaced by computers. Tho I do like how it sounds kinda like I could play a guitar to this.
>>71883293
>whiney nigger who can't sing with simple loop beat made in FL
no thanks
>>71882645
Honestly, the instrumental to that is the kind of shit I would listen to on it's own, but I like the subdue'd tone the rapper takes with it for most of it
