Do any of you sing/vocalize on your tracks? I really just want to use my voice as an additional instrument to be processed, but it's something I've never done before and to be completely honest, I get embarrassed when other people hear my voice on a recording (or any of my work for that matter).

the vocals are just sorta wonked out into a rhythm different enough from their sample that it's not being totally bitten

your playing is good, but you bounced your track with only the Left wave. So it's only coming out one side. Make sure to stereo bounce.

>the warped and wobbled chords leading into the drop is great. Mix sounds balanced and full, love the sparatic pauses, and chops. Fun beat.

>>71844883
I'm making a house tune too - please give me some feedback. you need more pump in that kick, it's too soft and piddly. Bass sounds full, but your build up could be a little more interesting - i found myself waiting for something to happen. (robotic effect on vocals - neat). It all sounds nice and you're for sure on the right track, but i found myself bored half way through because after 45 seconds i heard pretty much everything. However, i know traditional house is much like this so if you were going for that, and that alone, you did it! Overall great work, but keep making stuff.

>>71844960
Not sure what advice or criticism you are looking for - but I'll just give my two cents i guess? Bass is nice in the drop, but i felt like the overall drop shoulda hit harder. I think vocals could be the tiniest bit more present. clap also sounds stuck in the background. maybe a little more side chain on that bass because it seems to be eating up most of the mix. Cool sound you got going on though. It's intimidating and mean.

>>71845164
Uhhmm..... I don't really know what you're trying to make here. :l there's so much going on without much musical aspect.

>>71845200
Not OP, but when you choose to upload is all on you. I havent uploaded nothing to soundcloud, just clyp for you /mu/fags. I don't think i am ready yet, and I feel that first impressions last especially with music. If you post a track and nobody likes it, you could post a second track thats amazing and most people wont even click it to give it a chance. wait till your tracks are great - share it with friends and other producers (probably other than here because we are all kinda shit and rude to one another)

>>71845577
not sure what that long pause was at the start for, but when the track started it scared the fuck out of me. you should watch your levels while recording a lot of it sounds like it's clipping. the raw piano into the drum and bass is a good idea, but again it all sounds so "in your face" and not in a good way. try re-recording and get a better overall mix.

>>71845703
I needed that mellow vibe after bitsnake (jk bitsnake <3) .can't really suggest too much, other than maybe some retro vocal samples to slide in there to add some human characteristics.

>>71845934
Just keep making stuff. You'll improve, don't quit! (:

>>71845958
Kick sounds a little distorted but not fully outta place. You should look up a Slynk (spelling?) tutorial on how to write swing drums with midi. it will help this track advance a lot, trust me! Good work!

Here's my clyp WIP.

https://clyp.it/p5aey2hs?token=5ac58b683b6d624fe02a3b7de378f00a

I just finished a rough arrangement, and now hoping to get right into the mixing phase of the project. Just a generic house track, but I am really enjoying the vibe. I am going to add a lot more variation to the drums. I am Just curious on general thoughts, criticisms, and anything you hear that doesn't really work. All feedback welcomed. (:
>>
>>71847217
house that has no power is not house. Compression and transient shapers are your friend. I'm probably saying so because your kick is shit and everything sounds pretty dry and hi-heavy. Also, a common beginner mistake, there's a lot of shit that's overly stereo wide. Mono is your friend.

More like if you master FL you only master FL. I take college classes in music production and film sound with professionals in the industry and they all passionately despise it because its so inapplicable and impertinent. It's the most backwards, least transitive, least intuitive of any DAW. This has been known for a long time.

Hello, Perufag here.
I mostly play the keyboards and do some backing vocals in collab with local bands/artists and make some covers by myself to practice with Ableton, hoping to be able to record and produce songs by myself (have basic guitar and bass notions, abysmal at drums, but i can just write them in MIDI)

Quick question: Would this setup work for a (sans the vocalist) silent band rehearsal?

Well, I still have to sing over it and then EQ.

I've already added some comp to the snares/claps and the main melodic line.
I hadn't really thought about where it'll be played before but I'm looking to do live venues (clubs, outdoor gigs etc) and eventually hop on a touring circuit. That's the dream at least!!

Thanks and good ear! I'll fix it right now.

>>71856927
Aww thank you man. I find if I spend enough time selecting sounds that work well together naturally and limit the amount of processing I do to a sound, then it's relatively easy to have a clear mix.

Try mixing or re-mixing a track of yours by messing with the levels first. Try to make things work without having to using FX.

its very hard to get music like this to sound good without the inflections of a real piano. nothing against the composition, which is fine, but still.
>>71857249
well, I'd imagine for house such as this, you'd definitely need more rise than just the tiny bit of modulation on your arpeggio you have now. truthfully, the mix is fine, beyond that arp being too loud and killing the kick/clap. it's just boring. the arp is generic, the bass is slightly out of tune sounding,a nd really, it just sounds like you used sample packs for "generic house"

Just hit V and the volume automation envelope comes up. Shift click to add points, right click to change point shape or set default shape. As for other automations there is a button on the track (usually under the track name) that brings up all your effects parameters so you can choose which ones you want envelopes for, the 'show last touched parameters only' function is handy.

Do you just mean at the beginning? Because grating was the effect I was aiming for in that first part, like it starts a little harsh then gets to the point of being too much so it sounds better when the main beat drops.

If you mean the whole track I may have to tweak some things though.

Thanks for the feedback too I'm glad you liked it.

The bass is out of time, tidy that shit up.

The vocals sound like a dude in his bedroom just talking in a stupid voice into a microphone, which I assume is exactly what it is. I'm going by Ableton logic here, but I'd expect Reaper to have the same feature - instead of dragging the entire red line up and down wouldn't you just double-click at points on the line to create nodes that allow you to reduce the level of chosen parts of the waveform by dragging the nodes?

I recently found some of my first digital recordings on an old hard drive. couple decent beats, but lots of teen angst and cringey stuff

miss some of that gear though
>>
>>71865510
this is dope as fuck i never could afford to get into production until a few years ago
>>
>>71865510
I had some of these original samson resolv as well
what a crappy pair of speakers, but the greatest thing as a teen back then
>>
>>71865510
PLAY THEM TO US

Sweet setup you had there man.
>>
>>71865510
That's a serious workstation for what I assume a teenager at the time.

Guessing you're a professional producer or audio engineer now?
>>
>>71865510
>>71864342
yeah show us your old recordings
>>
>>71866132
Tried but the USB port doesn't work. I'll pick up a blank disc tomorrow and write off some appalling tracks for your entertainment though.

For those of us who've blown way too much money on physical VSTs, what's your favorite gear?

Been mostly fiddling around with this setup lately and holy shit it feels good
>>
Hi I want to start making music but I'm inexperienced.
Can I ask stupid questions here?
>>
https://clyp.it/qk1fvqi2

something ive been working on for a while
feel free to critique the mixing and arrangement
>>
>>71866339
Sure.
>>
>>71866339
Yes.
>>
>>71856200
That sounds mushy and too saturated. Remixing it from scratch.

https://clyp.it/k52irm1o

Drums, bass. then acoustics then rhythm electrics. Missing organ, vocals and guitar solo.

Feels like Reaper is making mix better lol
Has the wet/mix for each vst which i wanted to use before and Cubase didnt have (or i didnt know of)
>>
What is the mid-side technique
>>
>>71866709
Mid signal = Common signal in both left and right channels
Side signal = Signal that only exists in left or right channel

mid-side techniques are thus used for stereoshaping
>>
>>71866837
i suppose youre just guessing it from the name
>>
i searched it on google but i cant go past that, cant chose a link to click
>>
>>71866856
It depends man, mid-side "technique" can refer to a lot of things, mid-side micing, mid-side EQing, mid-side compression etc
>>
>>71866934
Do you know what each one of these means
I think its the recording one that i'm about
midside recording technique

This is the intro to a prog metal thing i'm doing. Is there anything maybe production-wise it may be missing?
>>
how do you master your track so everything sounds tight and almost distorted sounding? Hard to explain but i hear some songs that are slightly buried in static or distortion and it prevents the song from feeling "empty" or "too clean"

does anyone know what im talking about?
>>
>>71867269
use slate digital plugins they saturate stuff just like you want
you can also buy a cheap cassette recorder and put it to tape and back to pc yourself
would do the same thing plus add vintage feelings
>>
>>71867304
you can also use reverb for that purpose
but it might kill the sound depending on what youre going for

try the slate digital's virtual mix rack and virtual tape machines
they have multiple analog stuff saturation which also compresses the sound
and has compressors
>>
>>71866338
nice, how is that 0coast?

na music just remained as a hobby for me.
All of the guitar center credit card debt i acquired pushed me away lol

Here are some of the better ones, but last one is definitely cringe.

Hello everybody, me and my bois did a cover of AC/DC's "Back in Black." I'm the fellow who sings. Some intonation is a little rough but you know, what are you gonna do when it's take three and your throat has been screeched out. Hope you like.

why do people spend hours in front of FL or Ableton producing electronic music
in the end you had spent hours just to make a cool kick + snare beat
if these hours were spent with a band youd have create much more variated stuff

cant speak for myself though, i do the same thing
>>
>>71867724
cringing. Don't try imitating brian johnson
>>
>>71867787
i dont know
i used to play in bands and we would spend hours not coming up with anything good
>>
>>71867787
i dont really like to work with other people i have been in a few bands playing guitar and it didnt work out with the other members

being able to record your own music is a good option
>>
>>71867837
Aye aye cap'n
>>
Trying my hand at lofi for the first time.

Made in Audition. Samples only. Thoughts?
>>
>>71867787
If you have to spend hours on your kick and snare, your doing something wrong
>>
>>71867787
>>71867841
>>71867858
If you look at most bands songs are fully composed by only one member anyway, usually the lead guitarist. Co-writing music can be quite restrictive.
>>
>>71867944
im lead guitarist fuck yeah

kek
>>

in the last band i was in, we would practise for one hour, then go to the supermarket and hang for the other two kek
>>
>>71866709
>>71866709
depends what you're referring to. You mean the microphone technique? That's a stereo recording technique that involves one cardioid microphone and one figure 8 microphone.

>>71868024
my band were shite. probably spent more time messing about and jamming rubbish than rehearsing despite paying by the hour.
>>
>>71868109
You paid your band?
>>
>>71868109
Our singer volunteered at out practise space, so we just bummed around for free

nah we had to rent a practice room out of town. expensive but they provided top tier amps, drum kits etc.

Pls ignore how long this loop is, it's in phase one of me working out the levels and sounds of everything as a whole. Is the tambourine grating as fuck? Is there too much fake tape delay? new to this pls no bully.

>>71868733
add some variations in the melody and drums
also what type of bass is that?
>>
>>71868633
>tfw a guy I knew at college has recorded at abbey road

like fuck, i'd give my right arm for a session there
>>
>>71868769
It's just a loop of one bar atm, working out how to make sounds mesh together, going to record guitar and vocals then edit the fills and shit around that, dunno if that makes sense.

it's a free moog sample from Samples from Mars just pitch shifted and fuck with a little.
>>
>>71868870
Sounds good, i like what you've got going on so far anywho
Aight cheers
>>
>>71868924
Thanks I guess. I'm kinda new to this and was hoping for tips on what im fucking up mixing wise etc. :/
>>
>>71869081
Just listened to it again on some headphones and there's nothing wrong with it, maybe lower the tamb and increase the melody but other than that, there's nothing else to say cause its the same loop over
>>
how could i make the lead synth at the very start of this song? sounds like detuned saw but i cant get it to sound close to it

that song sounds like party
>>
>>71870323
party?
>>
>>71870346
yes
>>
>>71870346
it means a social gathering of invited guests, typically involving eating, drinking, and entertainment
