Does anyone else instantly drop an artist when they find out they don't (primarily) write their own songs? I mean a cover or a song by someone else here and there is ok, but I can't take and artist who only plays songs written by other people seriously.
I'm not saying that they're objectively bad, but they're ruined for me at that point.
Elton John doesn't write any of his songs, fucking good piano and player and singer though so he gets a pass.

That's not even true.

Pic unrelated? He's done covers, but he's also written timeless classics himself.

Which part, that Bernie Taupin writes all his lyrics or you think he's shit?
He famously said he has no idea what he's singing about.
>>71845902
he writes a lot of verses and lyrics but mostly throws them over classic american folk and blues songs. especialy his first few

For sure, I absolutely dig sincerity. It's magical.. So when it isn't there I can't stomach the tunes.

Elton doesn't write the lyrics, but he writes all of the melodies and more recently he's started writing his own lyrics. So he is definitely talented.
>>71845902
yea obviously Dylan is a great songwriter.
>>71845916
He writes the music at least. That isn't so bad. I'm talking about like Celine Dion or someone who just performs other people's music.
>>71845916
you think writing lyrics is songwriting? faggot the greatest most complex musical works of all time usually take their lyrics ver batem from religious texts or important literature. lyric writing isnt composing or songwriting.

Oh yeah I only meant the lyrics.
Just find it odd that one of the biggest ballad artists ever is singing classics he never penned. Obviously talented with melody like all piano masters all.

This isn't some rock band m8, it's all about him and millions of people resonate with what he sings. Disappointing when he's just going from a script don't you think?
melody>lyrics

>mostly
wow
>>71846126
No shit, I'm not arguing that. He's a musical genius.
But it takes away a big part of his artistry.

It's not a big part. Lyrics are mostly inconsequential, in my opinion.
Not really. Arrangement and interpretation fascinate me.
