What does indie mean in 2017? It sure as hell doesn't refer to music released on independent labels anymore.

Is it now just an umbrella term for any sort of guitar or synth based pop/rock/folk music made by white people that tries to walk the line between being slightly "experimental" while not offending anyone?

Based on the awful bands I see it applied to (Grizzly Bear, AnCo, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire), that's the only way I can think of to define it.
