I actually didn't like SFTBC much but I do quite enjoy The Hurting.

It could be argued that it's too self-indulgent and melodramatic but that in and of itself lends it a sort of catharsis. Still, I think the songcraft on it is quite strong regardless of how reliably its mood hits with the listener. Even if SFTBC is their true claim to fame, The Hurting is proof enough that that record was no fluke. They knew what they were doing.
