Rebelles Européens left a mark on the world between all their 45s and LPs. The label came to the forefront of the European Nationalist skinhead music scene, putting out records from its native France and abroad. Founders Gaël Bodilis and law student Brigitte Maljak, both active in the Front National Jeunesse as well as Troisieme Voie and Parti nationaliste français et européen (PNFE), managed Brutal Combat and brought Légion 88, Chauves Pourris, Bunker 84 and Kontingent 88 to lead France's nationalist scene.

Rebelles Européens produced nationalist music almost exclusively* from its inception until its untimely demise. Distinctive of the label was the open display of the Hakenkreuz on some of their releases. French law allowed Third Reich symbolism to be printed and sold publicly until 1994, which dovetailed with the label permanently closing its doors. There have been unsubstantiated rumors the French government forcibly closed the label after a police raid.

*Amusingly, a Dieppe-based 2 Tone Ska band named Machtoc released an LP on this label, apparently unaware of the political leanings. So too did the Italian anti-racist band Klasse Kriminale release their debut LP, although I suspect this could've been the work of Antonella Cavanna, who was active in the band at that time and is known to keep cozy with far-right skinheads.

Prior to the shared dominance of Neofolk, Martial Industrial and Folk Metal within the far-right music scene, evocative and melodically harmonious music rarely found itself manifested in Rock Against Communism. For over three decades, RAC, lyrically and musically, sounded primitive and thuggish; even the ballads of Ian Stuart and his contemporaries channel their working class frustration with a gruff timbre. Kontingent’s Générations futures proves an outstanding exception. Graduating from primordial Oi! origins, their sophomore’s minor key riffs played in unison with acoustics and quality Hard Rock a la The Cult all culminate in producing France’s finest RAC offerings. Only one of two records released on Rebelles Européens’s ill-fated imprint White Metal Records, Générations futures saw Kontingent’s last studio release before breaking up some time afterward, remembered by true believers and weirdoes like me.

A cleaner production marks the first improvement on Générations futures. Although a bit thin, the music here is much more listenable than on the predecessors. The metallic Hard Rock still recurs here, but it’s executed with much better precision and songwriting. The tracks run decent lengths which never overstay their welcome, and the enjoyable soloing breaks up the monotony as well as highlight the guitarist’s flourishes. Also highlighting the album is Laurent Malley’s performance as a vocalist. Abandoning the croaky grunts, he sings with a soothing timbre which only occasionally stumbles over some sour notes. He’s no Bruce Dickinson, but he conveys the albums themes with conviction that's worthier than the vast majority of his contemporaries, including the goat-voiced Saga. His singing certainly redeems his other role on bass; serviceable, but completely pedestrian.
>>
As with the production, the guitars highlight the album’s songwriting. Brooding minor key riffs comprise the entire album’s length. The guitar tone is thick, heavy and a bit fuzzy, but not overbearingly so. The album’s Hard Rock reminisces of The Cult, but “Victoire” channels NWOBHM-inspired Heavy Metal with unhindered prowess. Also adding to the album’s aesthete are acoustic guitars played in unison with the riffage on two separate occasions. You'd assume the two would clash unpleasantly and compete with each other for dominance in the mix, but they mesh together in a balanced, evocative harmony.

I never expected the same band which produced shoddy predecessors like 1789 and Au service de nos ancêtres to leapfrog on their final studio release. I even questioned whether these two were the same band, but the rear pressing of this release and some shoddy live performances of these songs confirmed it. Whether or not your personal views diametrically oppose band’s message, the album is just a joy to listen to. A shame this would be their final studio release.

Ah, the magic of French RAC. Nouvelle Croisade has quite a bit of history in Paris's skinhead scene. The band started in 1984 as Malades Mentales before changing their name to Donald Doc. I can only presume the band in those days were apolitical, because after meeting up with the boys behind Légion 88 in 1987, they became Nouvelle Croisade. The band hit the studio and recorded five songs, two of which were released as a single and the other three appearing on Debout Vol. 3. Their guitarist Bruno would later join Alain and company to record Thulé. Around that time, the band called it quits with the drummer Thierry joining Ultime Assaut and then 9ème Panzer Symphonie.

Everything ever recorded, from demos to the studio sessions, would make it to this nifty compilation. Unlike the crude drawings or photographs gracing the covers of most Rebelles Européens's releases, Nouvelle Croisade features a well-rendered illustration of a sword and flag-bearing Teutonic knight standing over a slain Saracen. Thankfully, the production values are a step up from most of their countrymen's records. The guitar sounds beefy with a bit of reverb driving the footstomping rhythms. Everything is balanced, so no instrument is mixed too loud or soft. The biggest drawback here is our lead vocalist, who has that intoxicated off-key moan quite like Robert from Ultime Assaut. God bless you if you can stand his "belting." On this compilation are a few demo songs that didn't make it to the studio.

Fans of French RAC will enjoy this document of the Paris skinhead scene.

Battle Zone have a sense of musical sophistication and songcraft that far outstrips other RAC bands of the era like No Remorse and English Rose. Indeed, some of these songs are so good it makes me wonder why this band are relative unknowns, but I suppose they were playing in a crowded market. It’s a sophistication that sadly doesn't cross over into the lyrics department but ho hum. Battle Zone are a bit of a funny band in this sense with vocalist Alex Ellui later renouncing racism (and politics of any kind) when he formed two new international versions of the band: Battle Zone Peru based in Peru where he currently lives and Battle Zone USA with Phil and Perry of The Templars, two projects that sadly for Oi! fans haven’t amounted to any new records. You gotta feel a bit bad for the guy really, it must be hard fighting to keep the spirit of your old band alive all the while kicking yourself for some regrettable lyrics you wrote back in the day. Not that he needs my sympathy or anything…

Things get head achingly confusing here when the band whip out a cover of Bob and Marcia’s old reggae tune ‘Young, Gifted and Black’ entitled ‘Young, Gifted and White’ complete with saxophone. Most amusing to me is ‘Rent Boy’, bashing gay skinhead fetishists - ‘You claim to get turned on by our style of dress!’

The opening track strikes me the most; it's hard hitting with bulldog power and with Alex’s gravelly bark at the forefront, it makes you feel ready for war. Throughout the quality never wavers - this is as hard as Close Shave but boasting tighter musical arrangement. You gotta dig that rather surreal album cover too.

Put simply, "This Time the World" is hate with a beat. The principle of evil made musical. This is an 100% scuzz classic. RAC is something many people listen to out of morbid curiosity, and "This Time The World" has to be one of the ugliest albums ever cut to wax. The liner notes claim that leftist campaigners tried to have this banned; truth be told, I don't blame them! I wince listening to stuff like "Bloodsucker" and "Hate Your Face," though the lyric about Rastas pushing drugs on kids is morbidly amusing.

How can rock ‘n’ roll be more fucked up? No Remorse may not be as hard as, say, Condemned 84 but they are twice as ugly. These songs are vicious, degenerate, violent and just downright nasty pieces of work. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth but you’ll be hard pressed to find hate rock that can match the imposing power of something like "Hail the Order."

Apart from the admittedly badass title track and the all-time favourite "Smash The Reds" many of these songs are probably too intimidating to approach again. But this album is just so horrifyingly, disturbingly evocative - read the lyrics to "Mother England". "Tree of Life", full of imagery depicting a virtuous and almost innocent 'Aryan' family (presumably after an apocalyptic race war) would be creepy... if it wasn't so poorly played. Thankfully, that would be fixed on the rerecording for "The Best of No Remorse"

This album is as memorable as they come, for the worst and best reasons. Has to be heard to be believed.

In case it wasn't screamingly obvious, Public Enemy is completely unrelated to the rap group of the same name, though I'd imagine both bands would find a few things to agree on. The first wave RAC band of the same name called it quits shortly after releasing their only studio album "England's Glory" in 1986. One year later, American Hip-Hop legends would drop "Yo! Bum Rush the Show," but rather than take it lying down, Paul Burnley hit the studios with a new line-up to record an album flipping the bird at the Long Island rappers.

The original band packed such a punch with their aggressive brand of Oi!, so hearing this downtempo lo-fi Hard Rock wasn't expected. Burnley's Public Enemy grew on me, for the music here is both exciting and disappointing. The drumming is seriously propulsive, giving that footstomping energy to the rhythm driven songs and intensity to the campy love ballads. The riffs sound like your standard fare Hard Rock, but the guitar tone has a distinct crunch due to the lo-fi production values.

The two flaws working against the listening experience is the rough shod production and unrehearsed musicianship. Tellingly, Burnley had stated in an interview the first album "There Is Only One Public Enemy" was practiced and recorded in exactly one week. For the sake of appealing to the romantically-inclined segment of his audience, Paul has these creepy racial love songs where he hits sour notes promising to save his English maiden from all that imperil their race and nation. They're contrived and chuckleworthy at best, more often than acceptable, they come across as grating and disingenuous.

Public Enemy would improve dramatically for the sophomore "Our Weapon Is Truth," where the production values are given a much-needed upgrade and the riffs hit hard. Burnley still couldn't avoid showering us with sappy love ballads, but at least they hit their mark for the heavier tracks.

From the very start, far right groups had tried to make their way into the punk scene like the National Front and their (silly) Punk Front zine, but it wasn’t until the development of Oi! and its skinhead fan base that such organisations had a true force they could mobilise. The NF promoted neo-Nazi Oi! bands such as Skrewdriver and this spawned the Rock Against Communism (or RAC) movement in proper. The ‘British Justice’ EP actually predates any ‘political’ releases by Skrewdriver, making it one of the earliest known RAC records of all time. It must be the only thing ever that’s dedicated to both Adolf Hitler and Splodgenessabounds (alongside ‘all groupies’ and ‘Nigger & Chris’).

I think there's a part in all of us that wants to be massively ignorant and reactionary at times - and that's why this kind of stuff is so bloody appealing! I can relate to the lyrics too, my nice white daughter became a disco whore and repeatedly listening to this was part of the therapy I had to go through to cope with the grief. I'm nearly there.

But really this is more appealing in terms of the aesthetic (I use that word in every review now and the Ovaltinees would kick me in the bollocks if I uttered it in their presence) than in terms of the songwriting. At times it seems like they're putting the message before the music, but "Argentina" will make Sean Penn cry when he hears it and the thought of that... keeps me alive.

Abandoning the mixture of New Wave and Oi! the played between 1984 and 1990, Ultima Thule reinvented themselves on their debut LP, creating a new style in the process, viking rock (a folk punk sub-genre mixing Scandinavian folk music and themes with punk and/or its related genres). Though the band never made much of an impression outside of their native Sweden, they did have a huge impact in their homeland, with this LPs two follow-ups För fäderneslandet and Vikingabalk going gold domestically, selling around 100,000 copies each; and though they are good CDs, I personally find this release to be superior.

From the reverb heavy spoken word introduction and majestic opening notes of "Ragnarök" through the last four songs (sung in English for us yanks and Brits), this is album is a winner. "Protect and Preserve" and "Election Day" are the standouts, the former is punk, the latter is folk, and both are staunchly nationalist. They drop the politics, but not the excellence for "The Story of a Witch" and "Ravens" to close the album strongly. As for the Swedish language tracks, I can't comment on the lyrics, but "En skägglös dundergud" and "Kring Sveriges fana" have the coolest music, and "Mitt land" with its pretty, catchy, acoustic sound is the most interesting. By the 1990s very few rock bands were creating new styles or doing anything original, and I salute these guys for trying something different and making it work.

Swedish RAC's own AC/DC, complete with a cheesy impersonation of Bon Scott. "White Power Rock'n'Roll" is Dirlewanger's heaviest album with the bluesy rock 'n' roll and rockabilly from previous releases taking a backseat to footstomping Hard Rock hooks. The production values here do the sound justice unlike their less fortunate label mates. In spite of the corniness, our vocalist is still endearing and the guitars bring some memorable riffs.

One of the crown jewels of French RAC revered by veteran skinheads of all ages. Those looking for unbridled aggression will enjoy the pagan thundering of these runed louts. The album has some tragic history as the sleeve commemorates their fallen comrade and original vocalist Jean-Christophe "Géno" Mâm. His untimely doom was purportedly caused by a heavily intoxicated decision to go for a swim wearing combat boots, predictably leading to his drowning.

The songs follow midtempo with foot-stomping beats, croaky shouts and scuzzy guitars. Part and parcel with most Rebelles Européens bands is the hollow guitar tone present on most of the songs. These guys overcome limitations which normally hinder my enjoyment of the experience with a few creative ideas, including some campy angelic choruses and Post-Punk flourishes on the title track and "Jávais un kamarade". While far from inimitable, Légion 88 still delivers unforgettable Oi! with occasional Hardcore outbursts fueling their uptempo songs.

After awhile, the mystique turns to tedium as it becomes apparent by the filler tracks they ran thin on ideas. Even so, the music aptly provides the much cherished invigorating experience.

A shit-fi torrent of racial slurs, snarling croaks and fuzzy guitars. ‘Front Line Fighters’, split between sorta-kinda Oi! and unsophisticated hardcore, really is a nasty piece of work and everyone’s nightmare of National Socialism is let loose as these Aryan degenerates fight for the great New Australian Reich (*holds in a laugh*).

White Noise, who had a more pleasingly old school sound and more tolerable (but not necessarily tolerant) lyrics, will always be the finest of Aussie RAC and the genre in general but Open Season must be praised for their hypnotic unpleasantness. Care for some Post-Punk with your Oi!?

Before getting elected to the Front National's central committee in 1997, Robert Ottaviani began his career here as Ultime Assaut's lead vocalist.

Decking the cover is a crude illustration of an Arno Breker statue raising a sword in front of a blazing silhouette and some classical architecture.

Gritty reverbed rhythms drive the music like their fellow countrymen Légion 88 or Chauves Pourris. The songs here are consistently midtempo and have a strangely ethereal quality which ends up soundling like a French version of "Second Empire Justice" by Blitz. The mostly Oi! A-side is a complete drag, and all too many songs string you along with a few neat intros, but then drag you down in the conventional third-rate Oi! you're tired of hearing.

The music becomes much more interesting when the album delves deeper into Post-Punk on the B-side. The closer "L.V.F." has some neat Ska strokes while "Chômeur 80" bursts forward with blazing Hardcore energy. Unlike the French pirate vocals of Légion 88's Alain or Kontingent's Laurent, Robert has this intoxicated, off-key moan which ranges from tolerable to grating. "Segneur Barbare" is perhaps his best performance since he keeps it at a volume just above a whisper. The instrumentation helps, too.

Highlights: "Guerriers Païens," "Chômeur 80," "Paris," "Segneur Barbare," "Les Cosaques," "L.V.F"
