My favorite meme guitars
>>
I wanna start a pickups&pedals company, would you buy my shit /gg/?
Also what should I call it?
>>
Thought I'd just post a couple things I don't like:

1)Most active pickups (Davy G sure rocked a set though, so I have to give them some credit): In general, they just sound lifeless and 2 dimensional to me, and they almost never have any even remotely usable sounds beyond super high gain

2) Most high output (especially ceramic magnet) humbuckers in general: I don't like the cleans on most of these because they either sound dead or ice-picky and brittle in the case of ceramic magnet pickups, and while they do get nice tight, thick tones under high gain, I actually prefer the sound of vintage voiced PAF style humbuckers under the same amount of gain. There are some exceptions (some PRS pickups or Bare Knuckle Rebel Yells), but in most situation I find that PAFs suit my taste better for pretty much every sound

3) Sticky gloss finishes: I prefer the overall feel of a nitro finish if I'm going for gloss just because it's smoother to me, and I'm okay with the feel of some poly finishes as well, I just can't stand anything that's sticky or hard to run your hand across
>>
>>71814923

>>71815015
Meme but looks so comfy no lie
>>
>>71815037

4) Aggressively brightly colored guitars: I'm all about flashy guitars-- my main guitar is cherry red with gold hardware, I own a black sparkly one, and the one I'm looking at getting now is a metallic oxblood with a matching headstock-- but the second that thing is a neon green or pink you can come find me throwing up out back
Sharp, pointy things around the edges: I neither like their looks nor their feel. I'm regretful to say that I do, however, like the look of a Rhoads style V

5) Richlite (and other synthetic material) fretboards: Ebony is my favorite fretboard wood, so the second I saw this stuff used in its place on some newer Gibson models I felt a piece of myself die a little inside. I absolutely support the preservation of rare or endangered wood species, but there are plenty of under- or completely non-utilized fretboard wood options that could be used instead of synthetics (i.e. some other breed of ebony besides true ebony or Macassar or different breeds of rosewood). I'm not making this argument based on any sort of concern with whether or not the fretboard affects the tone of the guitar, I'm making it out of a belief in authenticity in guitar building (also synthetic materials don't feel as nice to play to me)

6) Bad hardware, especially bridges: I'M LOOKING AT YOU, JAZZMASTER. That's my favorite Fender guitar, and yet after all these years they still haven't fixed the bridge saddles. I don't see any reason why they don't license or outright buy the rights to something like the Staytrem (which they have on the Troy van Leeuwen Jazzmaster-- my next purchase simply because of that, its aesthetics, and the fact that it's the best sounding Jazzmaster I've ever played), or at least design saddles like that to go on their Jazzmaster and Jaguar bridges to fix the string slippage problem

1) agree about actives vs passives. kind of like fluorescent light bulbs to incandescent

5) yeah ebony is the most even in my view. I don't know about authenticity in guitar building... it's how you decide to make it. wood has a voice that is its own though. Gibson has those baked maple ones (or did) and they weren't terrible. They weren't great but they weren't terrible.

A few years ago I bought some cocobolo for fingerboards as an alternative to brazilian (which is isn't but close enough and less strain on brazilian). Couldn't believe rcently that cocobolo is now on CITES. I mean in like 3 or 4 years there is now so little that they have to limit it. That's so fucked. In my view, just use good wood if you are gonna make a good guitar.

Chickenhead knob is just functional. The rotary switch has a lot of resistance and the knob I was using previously was annoying. Anyways changing the knob is easy so if you have any suggestions, I'm open to them. I don't really have any design skills so I'd appreciate knowing anything you guys think would look good, for any of the knobs for that matter. Pic related is the previous knob from a jazz bass.

I think I like how the black knob is like the original pickup switch. It might look better with one of those numbered plastic bits under it.

>but the second that thing is a neon green or pink you can come find me throwing up

When youll be gigging at an amateur concert, with 10 other band, believe me you would want anything that makes people remember you.

Literraly no one will remember "that guy #521 with a red strat" or "Gold les paul #28" on the next day no matter how skilled.

However if you have some JEM colored or chavel NEON believe me they all remember you in the next gig.

Is it for Ego ? No.

But people cheers for the band they know/remember (as long as you dont suck) and organizers give their chances to many, but they have staples woth bands that get cheered a lot/asked for more.

Its not ONLY about the $$$ which nobody can make. Its about enjoying going to 6 gig a months vs 1 gig a month actually playing on front of people with the tube amp louder than ever.

A band I know called TANK is now gigging and becoming professional just because they were wearing pink fluo "Star" sunglasses and playing metalcore.

Music is about Marketing.
The "stairway to heaven" Fender guitar + Marshall amp cover """band""" will NEVER grow.0

I don't think a pleb ones a bass that costs approx. $6000 new.

Additionally, tonal characteristics of wood are due mainly to density, as that effects how sound waves pass through an object. It still sounds good, as there a two main densities present, just like in a normal neck. Fingerboard, and neck.

Sorry flipped fuck me

Rate my meme guitars. I got a G400 today, had a coupon so it came out to $270. At that price its great so far, the action is all whacked out, I'll get to that tomorrow probs. Really I just got it to take back to school and have a guitar I don't care about throwing around. It's got pretty terminal neckdive, unfortunately - doesn't matter bc I play sitting, crosslegged, 90% of the time, but when I use it for backyard shows I'll probably tape a dumbbell to the body to balance it out.

Mememaster is 10/10 btw, trem is ridiculous, neck plays itself. The American pro is missing all those extra sliders but I don't mind so much, I play it through loads of pedals so most of my tone tweaks occur in the board, no on the guitar

You're killing yourself, why would you care if people "deserve it" or not? Just let it sit in your house for relatives to sell or sell them for cheap to anons. Or don't kill yourself. Lots of options. I'd probably choose the last one, but that's just me

Muting is the first thing to master. It's the difference between a shit bassist and a mediocre bassist.

>>71818339
Learn how to play well with your fingers first. There are some things that are easier to play with fingers, and some that are easier to play with a pick. In time you should be able to do both without issue.

The ibanez gio basses are great. I wish I still had mine.

Man, I want one of those Mexican Standard SSS Strats in Lake Placid.

Amerian Standards are over $2k here in Aus, but these go for around a grand so they are more in my price range. I will have to save up for one.

They look real nice man.

Yeah. I suppose it could be used well but I don't think it was in this demo.

Should I learn scales first or memorize riffs from songs? I feel like improvising on a scale is the ultimate skill on a guitar, but it really fucking sucks to learn

I've got the experience to tell you all sorts of shit. Some of this may not apply to your situation but I am sure someone can get some use out of it.

>1. Maintain your everyday diet
Eating crap everyday of the tour and eating at odd times compared to when you normally do will mess you up for the next day and make you feel crap. You have to be a special kind of person or have a pretty high metabolism to be able to deal with that lifestyle and few of us do, regardless it's not very healthy.
>2. Take a bunch of daily multi-vitamins with you and keep them up
You are going to encounter lots of germs with the crowd right there screaming and signing at you and probably throwing gods know what, on top of that you're going to be in close proximity. Immunity boosting syrups, multivitamins, Vitamin C particular, Ginseng. You are going to come into contact with a lot of germs. I definitely have noticed a difference.
>3. Rest after the show
If you're the vocalist, do meet greets before the show, don't plan on partying after. Avoid talking altogether and get to bed and rest that voice. Teas and lozenges are great, but sleep is the best healer.
>4. Never go above 90%
If you're the vocalist, never go above 90%. Sure you can give it your all on recording sessions, but you can't keep that level of intensity up for several hours, multiple days in a row for an elongated tour. You are going to fuck your voice up, so dial it back 10%.
>5. Bring games, toys and video games if you have the facilities to play them
There will be an absurd amount of waiting around and if you've nothing to do, time will stand still and it will be horrible. Once or twice, this is more than bearable, but you do even a small 30 day tour and have to put up with 4-6 hours a day or nothing to do but sit in a trailer, it gets to you and you will be at each other's throats.

>6. If you are traveling by tour bus, sleep in the middle and sleep feet first in the direction of travel.
It's gonna be easier to get up in the night to take a piss and a sudden stop or a nasty accident will mean your legs bend and cushion forces your head would have to endure if you were sleeping the other way around.
>7. After a couple gigs your forearm and string hand will get a lot stronger unless you are practicing 6-10 hours a day anyway
Bring higher string gauges as your current preference may feel too loose and thin into the tour.
>8. Seriously consider picking up a small head and running that into a decent cabinet
Unless you have roadies (doubtful), big heads are heavy, back breaking, fight starting pains in the arse and are often way too loud anyway
>9. Bring picks by the bag full
You and your band mates are gonna throw them out to the audience, give them away and generally lose them.
>10. Bring a guitar for every tuning you're playing and a backup of each, preferably one that is hard-tailed
You just need HTs as a backup incase something goes wrong, whether you are a trem signature player or not, unless you have a dedicated tech on standby.

>11. Bring recording equipment
Touring is very creative and you never know when an idea or inspiration is going to hit you because you are with your friends, doing what you love so you want to capture that as quickly and easiest as you can.
>12. Bring some decent cameras
It's often an after-thought. Crap why didn't we film this? Good for building a fan base and additives for social media and whatever you have going.
>13. Always bring a toolkit
Including things you don't think you're gonna need incase the others, or another
14. Always make sure hire cars/vans are in good condition before you leave the hire yard
I can't stress this enough
>15. Bring much more merchandise than you think youre gonna sell
Every single amateur band I've seen has sold out of merch way before the end of the tour. Underestimating how much fans love them and want their crap.

And that's it. Good luck, stay safe and stay healthy. It's gonna be the time of your life.

>>
>>71816575
Make sure you are 100% happy with the gear you are bringing along before heading out. I stupidly brought a telecaster along as a backup to my les paul and it sounded like utter shit when I had to use it through the same stuff. It was a decent guitar and stupidly thought it would be a better option than my MIM HSS Strat because it was american. I came really close to smashing the fucking thing and sold it out of frustration as soon as I got back.

Didn't spoil the tour as I only had to use it a couple of times, but still. If I was doing it again I would bring something closer to my LP.

Didn't Stephen O'Malley help design some?

Had something to do with using those pedals as a backup in case they couldn't find nearby Model T's.

some other Sunn clones
>http://www.midnightamplification.com/product/giant-sound

Before you buy any, try looking up some used Sunn amps. Sunn wasn't entirely know for their preamp section of there amps, what made them standout was the power section with enough headroom for days on end.

With that being said, I do like the 2 channel option those Beta preamps offered can run parallel. That alone is what interest me as a nice used of blend is always worth the price.
>>

Damn that Zazen Boys track was funky.

For the actual question, any regular amp should do it. Just dial the highs and mids close enough and then drop the lows as far as you dare.

All of those examples give a lot of room for the bass. I'd start with that.

but roto has loads of options in their catalog, i think that is why you see lot of people preferring them

what gauge set are you looking to get?
>>
>>71825270
>frequency wise it's pretty balanced for what it is
You mean the "clean" recording or the Slate processed? Or both?
The clean one has an excess from 2Khz up, comparing to the SRV recording ( https://clyp.it/2szsz5nd ), thats a fact, and that frequency range is known for being tiring to the ears if excessive

thanks

so i found the some sunn amps online... might pick up a concert bass just like dixie's >>71821931 or the other option is picking up a coliseum slave unit and using one of those preamps listed in >>71824038 but i'm preferring just to use my tronographic rusty box as the preamp

any of you want to share thoughts on past experiences with either amp?

just one? post more pics.

How important is playing with a pick when Im learning bass?

Just starting to learn (~4 months) and have been playing just with my fingers. I love it, I love the sound and the feeling.
Is it important to learn to play with a pick? I feel like the bass starts feeling much similar to a guitar once I start picking
>>
>>71825797
Fuck dude, that's one nasty bridge. If it were me I'd take it off and polish it good.
>>
>>71826392
I will next thread. Im at the gym.
>>
>>71825726
Medium chromes for life. God, they're comfy, and they can totally rock a round-wound vibe if you play them right. So much dynamic control you will find yourself considering whether your index finger or middle finger is in the sweet spot for harmonics. I shit you not. Not to mention they slap really well for flats.

How many watts is enough for a guitar to be heard over just the drums?

How the fuck can I play barre chords for an extended period without my hand getting exhausted and hurting like shit? I can tremolo pick all day with no problem but 10 minutes of barre chords and I have to rest my fretting hand
>>
>>71826880
Play more.

Itll get easier
>>
>>71826765
I've done it with a 20w but you'll want to go higher if you can
>>
>>71826765
Depends on speakers and whatnot but honestly guitar just cuts though the mix pretty good. There are even 30 watt amps that can do it, so you should just look at it by a case by case basis.
>>
>>71826880
cleanish? 40w fender combo works
distorted? orange tiny terror with a sensitive cab can do it
>>

>>
>>71826493
It's important because you don't want to suck or hate practicing it when you DO want that tone. But, it's not like it'll affect the rest of your playing much. But, since the only downside to putting it off is basically emotional, it's no big deal if you don't want to.
>>
>>71827313
Clearly just replied to the wrong post, calm down you autist

I plan to learn, just wanted to focus on fingers for now

Are there any benefits to pick besides a different tone?

Orion is a great guitar song if you take out kirk hammetts tracks.

>>71827394
Same for most Metallica.

Are there any other bands where the rhythm guitarist is just like... objectively far better than the lead guitarist.

Believe it or not some shit is just too hard to play with fingers. Well, same goes for pick really. There's stuff I've written for bass that can't be played without a pick, and it's not even gaudy stuff. Also, you can palm mute to get a different tone with pick, which you pretty much need to use a piece of foam for with fingers.
>>
>>71827676
I disagree. I've played bass for 13 years and never used a pick. You can mute the strings and play with your thumbs if need be. I am not saying you should or should not play with a pick, but I've learned to deal with it.
>>
>>71820388
im a crosdresser.

>>71820727
a sample and hold circuit that involved CV control, LFO control, and envelope control, coupled to a low pass filter, a fuzz and a delay that shared the modulation controls to achieve vibrato and chorus. i think there are more complex ive done, but i liked that one.

Anyone play slide? What is the best tuning for it?
>>
>>71827729
It's not like you can't mute without a pick, but you can't mute some crazy fast melody without foam or a pick. With foam or a pick the muting doesn't even make a difference in difficulty, just using your fingers is without a doubt harder.
