Why
Gorillaz peaked with Demon Days

>>
>needing to animated themselves to sell copies
>>
fuck off, The Fall was good
>>
>>71803300
good if you don't compare it to literally any other gorillaz project include the B-Side albums
>>
>>71803299
They've been transparent in saying that's exactly what the Gorillaz experiment was about, it was due to how "manufactured" they felt pop groups were so they felt that manufacturing a pop group completely from scratch would be the ultimate conclusion to the way pop culture was heading and would be hugely successful and they were right. It also allows them to get away with changing singers constantly between albums to artists like Yukimi Nagano and Miho Hatori to represent the different characters
>>
>making music on a large smartphone with shitty digital synths and drum machines instead of using real instruments and samples like their old shit.
Fucking Damon why

>Ascension is Hallelujah Money 2.0
>Saturnz Barz features a shittily autotuned Jamaican
>We Got the Power is generic feel good
>Andromeda is the only decent song shown and it's a filler song
>>
>>71803561
>Ascension is Hallelujah Money 2.0
In what way?
>>
>>71803561
Saturnz Barz is good, Andromeda is ok, Ascension is kind off a generic hip-hop track with nothing distinct, We Got the Power is a great sort of transition/filler track.
>>
>>71803756
Political shit
>MUH OBAMA GLOCKS NIGGA KILL WHITE MAN
>>
>>71803349
I don't know, I really enjoyed the minimal and intimate sort of feel The Fall had. However, judging by the new songs, Humanz won't have any of that, which is a shame.
>>
>>71803561
They're all really good except We Got the Power tho
>>
>>71803774
>>71803825
>Saturnz Barz is good
People keep saying this and I still don't understand why. Only the last third of the song with 2D is decent. When it's just Popcaan it sucks.
>>
>>71803835
>Only the last third of the song with 2D is decent
High School white boy pls go
>>
>>71804018
Isn't it high schoolers that love autotune shit though
>>
>>71803478
It makes no difference anyway, if they didn't have the marketing they would've failed.
>>
I wish they did songs where the "band members" were more prominently featured. in their older stuff it was usually "2D" or "noodle" singing and sometimes a rapper would do a couple verses.
now gorillaz just seems to be beats with random rappers and singers over them.
>>
>>71804018
High school white boys would be into the rapping more likely.
>>
I can understand Gorillaz featuring artists, and I love it when they do but this album really sounds like they went "how many people can we feature in a single album". Andromeda is the only one that sounds good right now
>>
>>71804945
>now gorillaz just seems to be beats with random rappers and singers over them.
This so fucking much.
>>
>>71803756
he doesn't like it
>>
>>71804945
>older songs featured the band members but the featured rapper would start thus making the song great and memorable
I have a feeling they had the idea that older songs having this would mean that the new ones would be instantly good if they have each one with a featured rapper
>>
>>71803800
Gorillaz has always been political
>>
>>71803278
I thought he just demo'd out the songs on ipads, no? He has been working in real studios with legitimate artists for months.

Reminder that self titled was their best album and Gorillaz will never reach this peak again and all media interest in them will die out since their quality has been going on a steady decline since the release of Demon Days

I'm gettin' the fuck on, I'm aggrivated
I know I'll make it, Im in a place full of hatred
Treatin' my life like a sacrred
Try to check me, I break your neck
Disrespect me you get injected
It's hectic with some bullshit that happen
You least expected
We just don't accept it nigga
I go ahead, lift my trigger
Get rid of bitches, pay you a visit, then get your shit lit
I'm a nitwit with a big dick, and big balls
I don't miss shit
I hit all, whoever that did this
We Gonna Getch'all
Now whether its Sadam or Bin Laden
Thats been startin all this trouble for us
Creepin horrors doin show after show, sleepin on the tour bus
We lost Aaliyah, lost our families, it takes no Tenges
You dont need us to say the world is fucked up dawgs can see it
Now it seems the public needs this shit to calm its kids
Cuz they findin out how you lied about your twisted sins
They say we bad for you but shit our music is your friend
They cant deter you from the truth cause we the helping hand

Why are brits so intriugued with American politics
>>
>>71806183
because they don't have anything good or interesting in their own country
>>
>>71806183
because the politics in their country aren't nearly as much of a mess and, therefore, less interesting
>>
>>71806183
Because 9/11 is hilarious
>>
>>71803278
Because Everyday Robots and The Magic Whip only sold like 20 copies.

Damon's a hack, bro.
>>
>>71806818
Is Blur worth getting into?
>>
>>71805982
Plastic Beach was p good. It's a shame they never put out a b sides album for it because the b-sides clips that have been released sounded even better than the album itself. I agree that s/t and semen days are the best
>>
>>71805304
They did this in Plastic Beach and that turned out fine though.
What spoils it is if the styles of their guests take over the songs.
>>
>>71805982
Do ya Thing is the best thing the Gorillaz have ever done. It's a shame Andre and James Murphy aren't featured on this album
>>
>>71803478
Think Yukimi was just on as herself on PB, like the tracks were down as 'ft. Little Dragon' which is a shame as I would have liked it better if her bits were supposed to be Noodle singing.
>>
>>71807440
Didn't the Miho Hatori tracks also say feat Miho? I thought Yukimi was supposed to be an older Noodle
>>
>>71806183
Because they want to sell records to Americans.
>>
>>71807494
Miho was credited in the booklet, but not the song titles
>>
>>71806484
Wrong. I love how Americans are divided between those who think their country is the best, and those who think their country is the worst. One way or another, the world is always about them. Other countries only exist to be compared to America.
>>
>>71807892
that doesn't mean their politics aren't a fucking mess
>>
>>71803478
Not to mention the huge range their songs cover, they introduced me to a lot of types of music I wouldn't bother to look at when I was 10 years old
>>
>>71806921
not really. worth a few listens but gets old fast

Going back to the older albums and songs, a fair bit of them sound like they have more care and quality to them compared to the newer ones by a lot, especially because it's more Damon's work and his sound.

Since no one I saw said it, here's the reason you dont really care for latter day Gorillaz as much: Damon Albarn produced it. The reason the s/t and Demon Dayz are good rely heavily on their producers. Dan the Automator has made some of the best back packer hip hop ever. Danger Mouse is a versatile producer that can handle various genres. Damon Albarn is a britpop writer and a lite version of Oasis. He doesn't know how to emulate either producer, so we end up with a bunch of shit generic stuff that hipsters pick up and say is good. Its not a coincidence that the Magic Whip was bad. The only good song to come out of Gorillaz was saved by another good producer: James Murphy, working with a huge rapper: Andre 3000 and only kinda features Damon basically. Why Damon now insists on doing everything, Ill never know.

You're really playing up DM role as a producer. DD was Danger Mouse's first time working with an artist that big (he was mostly working from his bedroom and produced a couple indie projects) and he admitted that he learned the ropes from damon

>>71803561
>i copied anthony fantano's opinions and i think i'm smart
>>
>>71803278
idk what you're all bitching about. I think all the new tracks are good. Saturn Barz bumps once Damon joins in, the Jamaican dude's verse is growing on me too. Andromeda is catchy af. We Got the Power is just a short throw away pop song, nothing too memorable but pretty inoffensive. Only song I'm not a big fan of is Ascension, but I've never really like Vince Staples and that beat is awful.

I'm optimistic about the new album.

Its true though, its were music is headed, the future of music are fake cartoon characters, holograms, teams of musicians changing and collaborating, automation.
The characters never age, you can sell merch, make movies, tv shows.
Piracy has bit into the music industries profits.
Damon has created a system where one could reap more profits if they were more greedy.

The creation of gorillaz while cynical is actually the end point of pop music.

I remember liking Demon Days when I was 16 and it had just come out. Now it doesn't really hold my attention anymore. Everything they've done since hasn't been notably worse, though.

I saw the haunted house video with the dancehall guest the other day and while it was kind of fun to watch the music seemed to continue the trend of further decline. I have no interest in downloading this album when it comes out.
>>
>>71803349
If you do comparisons literally every Gorillaz project aside from Demon Days is shit tier. Look at each album on its own.
>>
They're not awful, except for the initial track they released which was trash, but they aren't good either.

Two of the tracks are just outright rap songs, even though they ofc did rap before it meshed well with the rest of the song, these don't. That shit doesn't appeal to me as it does the mainstream normie audience who they're going for. Nothing interesting or unique about it.

Anyway I'm sure if Plastic Beach released just now I'd be saying something similar, and that took a while to grow on me but I like it now.

gorrlliaz was a creation of damons, so he is a permanent fixture, i can see some dystopian future world where a record company creates their own virtual band were they could easily replace the lead singer behind the cartoon.

I think the whole point of saturnz barz was that popcaan took over the track, he even references it as a popcaans track in the lyrics and the way the gorillaz act in the video implies possesion as a theme.

Just downloaded the new songs from SoulSeek and Saturnz Barz is not the released version but more of a sort-of unfinished version with some different instruments and vocal textures.

Anyone else has this?

How could you put the Fall above anything ?

This. Couldn't even finish it. What a load of bollocks.

>it has to be photoshopped to be more green to be a Pepe
I wish they'd have made Muds look more monstrous again. The human skin doesn't suit him so well.

maybe its just my autism but rus being normal sized after the do ya thang music video and murdoc being almost white after the stylo vid bothers me. Like yeah i get it they wanna go in a different direction but the timeline is fucked up even with the comic things they put up on twitter.

Have you retards literally not even looked at the track order yet?

01 Ascension feat. Vince Staples
02 Strobelite feat. Peven Everett
03 Saturnz Barz feat. Popcaan
04 Momentz feat. De La Soul
05 Submission feat. Danny Brown and Kelela
06 Charger feat. Grace Jones
07 Andromeda feat. D.R.A.M.
08 Busted and Blue
09 Carnival feat. Anthony Hamilton
10 Let Me Out feat. Mavis Staples and Pusha T
11 Sex Murder Party feat. Jamie Principle and Zebra Katz
12 She’s My Collar feat. Kali Uchis
13 Hallelujah Money feat. Benjamin Clementine
14 We Got The Power feat. Jehnny Beth

--------------------------------

You got Ascension starting it up and setting the initial tone for the album. Heavy focus on the rapper, relatively high excitement song compared to others they've done.

Strobelite has much more of disco/funk feel to it. Imagine a higher energy Cloud of Unknowing.

That in turn blends really well into the Jamican sound that Popcaan puts out in Saturnz Barz

Haven't heard the rest, so can't comment until we get to the end which has Uchis and Clementine tracks back to back finishing with We Got the Power. Both Uchis and Clementine focus more on lyrics and story telling. It's likely the end of the album is attempting to pay tribute to Demon Days and their outro tracks (I believe Hallelujah Money is supposed to be this albums version of Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head)

Half of this shit is just call backs to older albums.

Saturnz Barz is literally just a modern spin of Clint Eastwood. The gang arrives somewhere kinda spooky to setup new phase, its haunted by a rapper. Rapper created a sick track for them.

Oh god, same. I want Rus to be big, this pissed me off too.
>>
>>71821346
I get that but in clint eastwood it was only rus that got possesed, might just be my autsim though. also popcaan referencing himself just seems odd, like on clint he refferenced possesing russ, not giving himself a shout-out.

Cose this board already
>>
>>71821384

Because it's different. It's still a horror story, but this time its not a possession.

He doesn't refer to Russ as himself because he's not possessing Russ, he's haunting the house and he wants the intruders to know this is his turf.

Thats sorta what im sayin, just that damon is kinda aware how much popcaans takes over the track, which i think helps put it in a different light. I get that ghosts have been a thing for gorillaz since forever, i just think its never been this on the nose before about the artist portraying the paranormal entity

How does it feel to know that the Beatles of the Millenials are a make believe band /mu/?

How does it feel to know that long after your favorite bands have fallen into obscurity, the last copies of their song lost to landfills and rotting card box in damp basements over boiling attics, that the Gorillaz will still be relevant.

It won't really matter whether or not it was good or innovative. It was simply the fact that it was good enough to get most people to enjoy it.

Anybody got the link to the leaked album

i listened to Hallelujah money on release, it was meh.

What the fuck is this shit? Ascension is fucking aids.

This is the weakest Gorrilaz shit I've ever heard. And I LIKED Plastic Beach.

>>71821616
I really wish Damon would've put the English version on the album, it's infinitely better

Saw them perform Demon Days at the Apollo Theater. They brought on local choirs from Harlem to perform and they sounded way better than the Manchester performance, which was just a bunch of little brit kids screeching.

The best part of it was their opening band was an entire episode of Looney Tunes followed by a Waldorf and Statler puppet bit. That and Damon came out front at the very end to perform Hong Kong, shit was magical.

Pretty sure my life peaked after that show.
>>
Album's shaping up to be a clusterfuck at best at this point.

Might come up with a handful of good songs tho.
>>
>>71809306
Oh yes, this song was so pretty.
>>
>>71821326
Why doesn't anyone ever list the interludes.

Also, it's bullshit that 1/14 actual tracks are just Gorillaz. I just want Gorillaz god dammit.
>>
>>71821727
I love Gorillaz, but I sure as fuck wouldn't compare them to the Beatles.

You just had to make me look.

I will now hate myself and Damon Albarn for the rest of my life. After the Humanz shit this is a huge breath of fresh air, yet I know there will never be a full version.
>>
>>71821736
I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist.
>>
>>71822981
Damn straight.

Gorillaz has at least one decent song.
>>
>>71822993
And that's song in Seattle -motherfucking- Yodel
>>
>>71812935
And it was originally a free album for the fan club, and pretty obviously the record label forced them to sell it at a later time because the tour was costing them money.
