I didn't know Seinfeld played guitar.

Fuck ya. Knopfler is left handed but learned on a RH guitar, uses his fingers 99% of the time, and didn't start playing an electric til he actually knew what he was doing on acoustic first. Easily in my top 3 guitarists. Watched this recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27OT_FSWrIE&t=172s

I enjoy Knopfler's style, but Dire Straits aren't a good enough band for me to consider him underrated as a guitarist.

underrated? really? he is the public face of one of the best selling music groups in history.
i don't think there is any generalized discrediting of his work, in fact i would say he is widely revered as a great musician beyond his ability as a guitarist.
