why is this album so weird? the production almost feels like

Listened to a few tracks before posting this, but it seems like they just made some relaxing music and made sure they toned down everything with the right EQ and reverb. This isnt exactly atmospheric ambient more of like a slow alt-rock album with super heavy ambient influences. Ill probably give it a better listen one day

come softly is my favorite song of all time

I'd honestly describe it as dreamlike. It just sort of drifts from one melody to the other, to the point where it's hard to definethe song. kinda like how dreams are transient and indescribable.

because it's an album of soft folk songs that have been turned into ambient by boatloads of reverb and other production choices. it's not pure ambient so much as it's like a singer-songwriter thing filtered through a sleep-deprived, narcotic lens.

I think I understand why it seemed so anachronistic to me. the melodies remind me of some madrigals and renaissance music

It's just basically really slow acoustic guitar ballads, except played on electric guitar with loads of delay and reverb and most importantly layered vocals

It doesn't really have an ambient music approach. Also my favorite album of hers.
I remember reading an interview about how she grew up in some kind of cult and had a really weird childhood

ehhhh, sonically it's pretty much exclusively an ambient approach
the songwriting and melodies are what distinguish it, but those effects on her guitar and voice you mentioned are rooted in ambient, as is grouper's work in general

whatever, this is a meaningless discussion since we all seem to like her anyway
