Why is Grimes great? What is essential Grimes? If I want to get into it, which albums should I start with, and is there any albums I shouldn't listen to until later? Anything new and exciting happening with Grimes? Any upcoming shows or festivals or whatever? And do you really need a trip for this?

If you just say "grime thread go! pls be nice" you're not going to get a lot of replies.

Follow the chart. Look for the thing that sounds most palatable to you to listen to first. Then try other releases if you're still interested. Her music tends to complement music/genres postiviely that you are already familiar with.

I'm listening to Grimes for the first time now (only like fourth track into Art Angels).

I don't understand the hate. Pretty catchy.
>>
>>71747697
Grimes hatred is a meme. She's a hugely talented indie (as in truly independent) who actually managed to avoid selling out when she went commercial. Ergo a LARGE part of the misdirected hatred she gets from pretentious pools of people like /mu. People with her kind of talent normally only ever manage to get true mainstream success if they play the establishment's game - which she pointedly doesn't do.
>>
>>71743671

>Didn't she get snippy with /mu/ and other people sexualizing her on the internet?
Pretty sure you're thinking of Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES.

Grimes did have a bit of a public freakout over how both Internet internet message boards (presumably including /mu) members of the professional music press were treating her like meat after she first started making headway in the popular scene, but she's publicly stated that she's grown out of taking that sort of thing too seriously anymore.
>>
have you noticed she doesn't follow many of her montreal friends on twitter? but most of them follow her

>The mixtape takes Charli’s well-tread blend of Jock Jams and bubblegum pop and runs it through PC Music’s internet-based aesthetic. The result is a bit like Grimes without Claire Boucher’s distinct vocals and art-damaged lyrics. It’s Art Angels with a lower killer/filler ratio. But then again, that’s not fair to Charli. This is just a stop-gap mixtape, and few pop albums measure up to Angels.

>>71753817
A close friend of hers commiting suicide is what motivated her to start seriously pursuing Grimes, so obviously quite a lot.

Also, fwiw, virtually all music ever written is about one of the following three things:
1. Love (presence or lack thereof)
2. Sex (presence or lack thereof)
3. Death (presence or lack thereof)

Pop music tends to be about sex, with a little love thrown in for good measure. Grimes' music is something like 60/40 death/love, which is one of the reasons it makes for such interesting pop music.

>>
>>71758123
Christ how old is this frog meme now?
>>
>>71758341
Pretty good quick breakdown, but you should add this:

4. Wealth (presence or lack thereof)

It's a pretty common theme. Not saying it's relevant to Grimes at all though.
>>
>>71758582
>You idiots talk about her like she's Maria Callas or something
Lol... Did you you know that Maria Callas was famous (EXACTLY like Claire Boucher) for having a contriversally unique-sounding voice and imperfect vocal technique? She was also famous for publicly disparaging the sound of her own voice in interviews - also just like Claire.

Now that you mention it, there's probably a very good case to be made that Grimes is the Maria Callas of pop music.
>>
>>71758585

The first time I listened to a recording of my singing was when we were recording San Giovanni Battista by Stradella in a church in Perugia in 1949. They made me listen to the tape and I cried my eyes out. I wanted to stop everything, to give up singing... Also now even though I don't like my voice, I've become able to accept it and to be detached and objective about it so I can say, "Oh, that was really well sung," or "It was nearly perfect."

>CORNISH: In a way, do you feel like you have been both rewarded and penalized for your voice?
>BOUCHER: Yeah. I mean, I think my voice is very - it definitely bothers some people. Some people really like it. People hate my lisp. When I was in high school, I remember people would be, like, uh, I don't want to talk to you. You have a lisp. It's so annoying. But I don't know. I like having a weird voice. All my favorite singers - you know, even if they're not the best, but they have a voice that you can immediately recognize, I think that's a really awesome trait.

Generally I like things with interesting melodies/baroque style melodies. And things with great harmonies. Vocal harmonies are some of my favorite. I also like good lyrics. So I don't mind listening to a melodically simple song if the lyrics are compelling.

I also like sincerity. Style doesn't matter too much but I prefer acoustic instruments.

Fwiw if you move around her backlog things can get VERY different, so I wouldn't call these two songs representative of her entire discography by any means - just the portion of it that imo sounded like it would fit your taste.

>She reminds me a lot of what Thom Yorke did with Atoms for Peace.
Amok is - by far - my favorite Thom Yorke project to date. Fwiw I'm fairly certain that Grimes' music had a direct impact on its eventual sound (Nigel Godrich was apparently staying up late at night watching Grimes live performances on Youtube while he was in the midst of producing it - https://twitter.com/nigelgod/status/202661679966859264 )

>>
>>71764353
Based on your previous reactions, I'd say try Visions. Slso see pic related >>71746317 - it might be of some use to you.

Imo her music/art in general is particularly unusual in that you can find the whole thing strange (in a bad way) and simply not to your taste up until you come across one song that happens to appeal to you, and - presto! Your feelings about everything you've already heard of hers can change in a heartbeat.

That's what happened to me. I happened across some of her Visions-era music videos and (like you) simply wasn't into it - although I could still appreciate what I was seeing/hearing. Years went by without me putting another thought to it. Then, one day, I randomly clicked on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5XUw4qHZo and seeing/hearing her perform that first song in partcular (Symphonia IX) radically changed my whole perspective on both her and her music (I originally had no idea she was anything more than just a random face some record execs had recruited from somewhere in northern Europe to be the figurehead of the Grimes project.)

It actually took me several months to even realize that I had actually already heard some of her music prior to that, because my musical perception of everything with her was changed so drastically.

And AA B-sides, please.

Grimes is the only person who can do Grimes' tastes well
>>
>>71765217
Grimes' music is actually very insular in nature. Which is to say that it is very specifically tailored to satisfy the musical interests of its author (for a more historical example of someone else like this, go check out the works of the 20th century composer Benjamin Britten.) This means that in order for anyone else to fully appreciate such an artist's music, a person must first develop a taste for it.

The most effective way of doing this is to find that one song from the artist's discography that most easily speaks to you already (e.g. the one that most resembles the sound of music that you already genuinely like) and then gradually expanding your listening habits from there. Which can prove to be quite a chore (essentially listening to an artist's entire discography) for people to accomplish for an artist who they have yet to decide they actually like or not.

Hence the clear difficulty many have in "getting" in to her music - both on /mu and on other places.
>>
>>71767665
That wasn't my point. I'm not denying that there are lots of people who post in the Grimes threads but these generals are kept alive by one anti-social and lonely faggot. Other threads like this get a lot of replies quickly then die out.

Nah, that's just the angle her head is at. Apart from that, though, you're probably right. Although shooting outside in natural light like this with a decent makeup artist makes photoshopping pretty much unnecessary (imperfections get washed out/hidden naturally.) Fwiw the moment in that song to which you are referring is known as an abrupt key modulation - in this case a vi chord in the original key (meaning a C#m chord, since the song starts in the key of E Major) which then drops down by a half-step to form the tonic chord of the new key (C Major.) The keys of E Major and C Major are about as distantly related as you can get. Which is why that abrupt transition sounds so striking. It was a very Impressionistic move on Grimes' part.

I'm quite fond of the last minute or so of Urban Twilight, where her voice comes back into the background instrumentals as a wordless, hollow echo. That whole song in general, actually is filled with very cool musical ideas. Imo it's majorly underrated.

I managed to give myself a very slight case of tinnitus (no regrets btw) by listening to her entire discography (up to and including Art Angels) on almost constant repeat for 2.5 months when I first discovered her music early last year.

My standard practice when I discover a fresh artist is to stress test their entire discography in chronological order until I can't stand most of it anymore, then add the best bits into my general listening playlist and move on. With Grimes I was never able to eliminate anything. I eventually had to just stop listening to her music cold turkey for a while because I reqlized that I was never gonna listen to anything else again, and that just isn't healthy.
>>
>>71792677
That's a really cool key-change. She knows how to maintain the listener's attention during every second of her songs.

Funny thing, on my first listen of Halfaxa I deleted its last 2 songs because I couldn't stand them. Soon, I put them back in my library after I realized that I wasn't simply accustomed to her weird style. The thing is that her music could stand massive overplay, it's that well done. The fact she added so many little details in her songs and the fact she polished the melodies to perfection are a guarantee that her music will remain interesting every single time it's played.
