started working on this today, what do you guys think?
>>
>>71694611
>https://clyp.it/hciuv33p
Not bad but it felt like different genres mashed into to one song

0-26 seconds felt like it was going to be a slow song

then 26-54 it was glitch step

then the rest of the song was dubstep

It wasn't bad but I think you need a better build up
>>
>>71694534
Kinda cool. Reminds me of Yves Tumor. The guitar line gets a bit repetitive after a while tho. Personally I would take what you have at the 1:40 mark and write a new song around that.
>>
>>71694611
I agree with what the other guy said. The intro with the guitar is a little out of place. The main drop part is phenomenal tho. The mix sounds perfect.
>>
https://clyp.it/q4f3xcda

Anyone have any recommendations as far as the mix?

I'm gonna get this mastered soon. Will that improve it much? Will that give it a professional sound?

Also I feel like the snare really juts out of mix and kinda grate on the ears. Compared to >>71694611 where the snare sounds absolutely huge and sits perfectly in the mix. How would I go about fixing that?

hey man, I think you posted this yesterday as well. I really fuckin like this. about the snare, I think yours sits pretty well in the mix and suits the vibe, mine is a bit more bombastic because I was going for that feel but it ultimately depends on the sample you start with. and yeah mastering will definitely bring this up although you can do it yourself, it's mainly loudness that this track lacks.

ending really really reminds me of Blank Banshee

Thoughts on this jazz bit I just made about an hour ago? Intended to sound 50s with hard panning and that tape hiss boiz.
>>
>>71696133
The chords don't flow well, also the double bass sounds very muddy.

>>71696295
Well it basically does the same thing the whole time... needs movement my dude.
>>
>>71694534
it's cool (love the noisy bg), but the melody never goes anywhere. listen to some guitar based instrumental prog/post rock and you'll get exactly what I'm saying (king crimson's discipline (the song) sums it up)

>>71695267
i think you need to add something else... a flute in the bg would do nicely from 1:49 to 3:08 IMO. the snare's ok, maybe a bit too loud

>>71695472
it's nice as it is desu

>>71696275
>>71696133
bass was meh except 2:27-2:45, there you got it

I'm just starting to learn how to use a DAW, and I'm having some trouble routing MIDI to different VSTs. I've got all my instruments on different tracks but I can't figure out how to have them all on separate MIDI channels. Every time I try to add more than two instruments it turns into a clusterfuck. So I'm thinking of doing some sort of 70's rock EP for my dad who grew up in the 70's and love deep purple, led zeppelin so on, just so he can have some music of mine to call his own.

Trying to nail that 70's rock mixing sound, but need some pointers if any of you have any experience in that are.

One of my own is that I need another snare, something more jazzy as this one is way to modern for that era.

theres actually a bass in there, but point noted, it needs to cut clearer through the mix.
This was just a a short idea I threw together last night to work around with the sound on. Guitar work is sloppy as hell, but so is it in 70's rock songs as they usually played it live in studio usually after a few beers, so I guess it works to the advantage of the sound i'm trying to get which is Made In Japan by Deep Purple .

Generally the best place to start with PT is to actually record musicians, its the quickest way to learn the workflow (which IMO is simpler and a lot more efficient than other DAWs). Once you're done with that start playing around with your instruments same as ever. And what the other anon said, if you're feeling lost lynda.com is your friend.

What do you guys use to clean up the low end at the end? My shit sounds too boomy in the final mix I need to let it breathe

>>71713174
Get your mix right as you go. Identify where there's 200Hz buildups in your mix and do some more careful EQ. Alternatively be super lazy and just put in a high-pass or shelf, this is gonna sound like shit most of the time however.

very cool, but you have some mix issues. Kick is way to hot baked now, pull that back a fair amount of db on both sections, distorts in a bad way.

Your bass sounds out of tune.

The bass hit roll will put off any rapper as it is distracting and sounds off beat.

I applaud your attempt, but it isnt quite there yet. Your production is a bit lacking, the choir in the begging is a bit out of tune (melodyne? maybe hard with those portamentos)

You have the creativity, but you lack the experience. Give it a year or two, play with more genres not only EDM, absorb as much as possible and you will get there.
>>
How do I know when to invert a chord or in general what voicings to use?
>>
>>71715394
Bingo!
Thanks for the FB, that's pretty much what i was feeling with this. I was gonna add some strings or pads in the background. But i ended up just noodlin around with my guitar and messing with omnisphere. I dont really wanna spend anymore time on it
>>
>>71715434

>>
>>71714517
really good, you need some more ambience/foley in the background to make it sound fuller, also the chord instrument sounds a bit too static and nasal at points, might wanna rewrite some more open voicings and modulate it a bit.

>>71714730
generic aimless trap but lil yachty would probably use this lmao

>>71715205
not bad, but there's issues, the snare is very dull/muffled. the kick around 1:40 gets way too loud, also these tom fills are very loud too. the sub is inaudible, might wanna use something with a bit more harmonics

>>71715434
Chord at 0:55 is wrong, I don't think you want a minor there. Overall not bad but it doesn't sound like those fully blown bombastic tracks, everything is kinda average/dull. it's a matter of time until you get there like the other anon said.

>>71715618
learn chords then use them according to your taste and what you have in mind. it's all about serving the ideas in your head, not aimlessly putting notes on the piano roll.
>>

when your piano roll starts looking like a roller coaster, you idealy want to keep in as much as possibe within a certain area of the keyboard to not clash with other instruments in the piece. That is probably as basic as your going to get it.

It's not an absolute rule as exceptions can have cool effects.

>>
Just face it, you'll never be famous.

You aren't special, no matter what your mommy tells you when you finish showing her ur shitty track and she has to lie to stop you from killing yourself.

You will never be a rockstar, you will never pioneer into new genres, you will never get the cars, the money, the women, or the attention.

You will never have young girls getting wet when they are in your mere presence.

But it's not like you had a chance to begin with? Martin Garrix went to an elite school of musicianship and has been producing for over 10 years, and he's only 20. At 18 he was touring the world, fucking bitches and getting money for producing child's play, whilst you fail to produce a musically coherent 4 bar loop.

There are 1000's of producers like this, child prodigies just itching for a chance to show off their amazing work, and you honestly think you stood a chance? No, you don't even have the intellect required to be a producer, so even if you "grind"(cringe) you will get no where and will never finish anything.

By all means, keep feeding money to Native instruments and cymatics, but keep in mind your going to have to work 9-5 for the rest of your life, and probably put in a few extra hours a week to pay back your debts.

>inb4 Martin Garrix is bad.

Although GarageBand is often joked about it is still a worthy daw to make music on. It's basically a cut down version of Logic Pro and has plenty enough features to make music on.
I started making music 20 years ago when daws were far worse feature wise than GarageBand is now. It's all about ideas and learning your software. Burial is known for making his music with Soundforge which is a audio editor not even a daw.

I can stand by this, I use fucking Mixcraft of all things, mixcraft used to be a garage band knockoff for windows, but have evolved into a more of a sophisticated stand alone daw. mixcraft 7 is actually pretty decent and I have a great workflow with it (which is one of the reason I have stuck with it, tried ableton and cubase, but felt everything was so heavy handed in comparison to mixcraft that I couldnt bother with the switch) and it has taken every vst I've thrown on it from lightweight freeware to 20 gig kontakt libraries.

Your selection of DAW will have little to no impact on the quality of your music imo.

That's all true but Garageband is designed in a way in which new producers are encouraged to just drag and drop premade loops together.
You can make good things on it, it's just that you probably won't.

So I've got myself a nice little DAW, a cheap but good enough MIDI keyboard, I got myself some knowledge about music theory and a couple of the best synths you can get for free. But what's next? I don't quite seem to be able to do the supposedly fun part of the whole thing, namely the music itself. How the hell do I approach this?

The fun part is the process of turning a simple idea into a fully fleshed out song. If I'm honest I've bought a lot more software than I need, but I still use basically everything a little bit. Just hum a line into a mic if you think of one, then put pitch correction on it and convert it to MIDI. Build it from there. You'll get there anon!
>>
>>71719888
>>71719621
In relation to your compression, try a 2A clone. Its meant for limiting but I use it across a lot of stuff for some nice transient control. Throw it on those extra vocal tracks and dial in your GR until they're not quite as obvious (they sound a bit out of key too).

>>71716507
You know what else. When I started out making music my studio computer was an Atari st running CuBeat which was the light (cheaper) version of Cubase, it had no audio capabilitys and just ran midi to my hardware sampler that had a few seconds (4 I think) worth of sample time , I had a cheap rackmounted zoom effects unit and that was it. I'm not gonna lie and say my music was good back then but it was certainly creative and I did make music.
Most Jungle/Drum&Bass from that era was made using simular setups. So again mix raft and GarageBand are light years ahead than the sample capabilitys of old hardware samplers and the audio editing and vst instruments are incredible compared to back then.
Over the years I've used most of the daws available and now I pretty much just use Maschine as I really like the simplicity of it. I've not touched my proper daws in over 2 years now.

>>71725406
The learning curve when you start out with very little is really quite amazing. Some of the stuff I made back then was the most creative I've ever made. It's easy now to get stuck in the same workflows and whatnot whereas back then every sound was new to me.
I'd borrow a friends mics and portable DAT recorder and spend a whole weekend collecting sounds for my sampler then weeks editing the sounds on a tiny screen with no waveform display so it was all done by ear. It seems that now people think that working like that is a waste of time as you can load a sample into an editor and it'll chop it all up for you within seconds, but spending a few hours with a sample, editing and chopping it gives you some quality time to really listen to it and get to know it. Plus I'm in no hurry I'll sit and drink a beer while I wait for a sample to load up off a floppy disk

Focusrite 18i20 if you want a good value for money interface that you won't grow out of for awhile. Something better if you have the extra cash and want top quality.

>it's not, it's a vital part of playing with samples
yeah definitely but the thing is, you sort of try various samples and see what fits, playing around, yeah? so i imagine one would find a situation were you get a song warped perfectly after a while and realize theres a sample that fits better, and you gotta warp that one all from the start. so the process sort of goes against this idea of "put a sample there and see if it fits"

do you warp small stuff like a hi-hat or a kick sample, or only these 10+ second sounds are the ones that sound off?

If you mean a booth for a guitar amp, the room matters less in that case because mics are generally pretty close to the amp and will pick up very little room sound. If you mean acoustic guitar, a vocal booth style booth wouldn't be great for that. It'll suck the live out of the guitar. An acoustic would generally be recorded in a live room.

I think the more recent notions of using these type of plugins in parallel and even band limited can really have some benefits over slapping some tape simulation on every channel into some analog bus modeller hoping that everything magically glues together
because it does not
the changes usually are subtle as fuck (just as with good analog gear the headroom is huge and it's pretty clean actually) and if they're not then the plugin is exaggerating these effects which is fine and really typical for waves and similar but then you need a way of controlling it, that's where parallel and multiband processing comes in
if you're experienced enough with what kind of distortion and grit you can get out of what processors and how to use that in the mix then you can certainly benefit from some loudness, more interesting textures and whatnot
just don't be one of that guys who thinks everything is warmer and more magical just because it says tape somewhere on the interface

This song tells the stoy of the epic battle FLAMINGO vs. CRAB. It´s fucking brutal. The Flamingo has eaten so many crabs it turned pink. The crab is represented by the castagnettes.

boring, generic, but good. the vocals get slightly buried at some points.

>>71744400
this is awesome. I love the vocals. did you record them?
>>
>>71744400
really good senpai
maybe try removing all the percussion for that part after 1:05 as the focus turns to just the sriings/horns... i think it might make that transition more alluring.

what did you use for samples/rompler?
>>
>>71744552
Thank you! I used a vst called "Voices of passion" from east west! I do however plan to replace them with real vocals once I find someone who can sing!

>>71744572
Hmm, I'll try that! Atleast reducing the amount of percussion, and replace some of it with something else! Thank ya!
I used many of the vst's from east west!

This is the track I had to make for my university's songwriting and production course. Overall I'm happy with the writing and arrangement and the lyrics, and the vocals are killer. But the drums weren't performed brilliantly and this is my first attempt at production so it's a bit pants.

The guitars don't sound great, but the bass is decent, and there are a few awkward edits which I tried to hide as best I could. All my EQ settings are pretty much following YouTube tutorials and guessing. The levels are alright I think. It's s-supposed to sound lo-fi, g-guys.

music for a top-down shooter game - the modest group of soldiers the player controls are infiltrating the main enemy fortress so the feeling should be of "getting pumped up, no looking back, ready to kill" with the player immediately encountering hostile enemy targets to shoot at.

that's the general idea of it, it's nowhere near finished, but i would appreciate any input. break my heart if you must

I like this, reminds me of Cassegrain/Tin man. With like a fourtet vocal.

This is the first tune I've done after a 6 month break, it's a bit moody classic electro

I really, really fucking want to collab with someone who can rap.

I just started making beats and I'm giving them away, but I can't for the life of me find someone to rap over them.

Any of you kind anons wanna collaborate?

>mfw I'll always be a shitty producer with no one to actually use what I make.
