Jello Biafra's voice is what I imagine comic sans would sound like.

In the off chance you're earnestly interested in quality RAC, I have several suggestions for you.

Nouvelle Croisade:
https://youtu.be/D2AGMIr73c8

The band started in 1984 as Malades Mentales before changing their name to Donald Doc. After meeting up with the boys behind Légion 88 in 1987, they became Nouvelle Croisade. The band hit the studio and recorded five songs, two of which were released as a single and the other three appearing on Debout Vol. 3. Their guitarist Bruno would later join Alain and company to record Légion 88's "Thulé." The band called it quits with the drummer Thierry joining Ultime Assaut and then 9ème Panzer Symphonie.

Everything ever recorded, from demos to the studio sessions, would make it to this nifty compilation. Nouvelle Croisade features a well-rendered illustration of a sword and flag-bearing Teutonic knight standing over a slain Saracen. Thankfully, the production values are a step up from most of their countrymen's records. The guitar sounds beefy with a bit of reverb driving the footstomping rhythms. Everything is balanced, so no instrument is mixed too loud or soft. The biggest drawback here is our lead vocalist, who has that intoxicated off-key moan quite like Robert from Ultime Assaut. God bless you if you can stand his "belting." On this compilation are a few demo songs that didn't make it to the studio.

Fans of French RAC will enjoy this document of the Paris skinhead scene.

Speaking of Ultime Assaut, care for some Post-Punk with your Oi!?

Before getting elected to the Front National's central committee in 1997, Robert Ottaviani began his career here as Ultime Assaut's lead vocalist.

Decking the cover is a crude illustration of an Arno Breker statue raising a sword in front of a blazing silhouette and some classical architecture.

Gritty reverbed rhythms drive the music like their fellow countrymen Légion 88 or Chauves Pourris. The songs here are consistently midtempo and have a strangely ethereal quality which ends up soundling like a French version of "Second Empire Justice" by Blitz. The mostly Oi! A-side is a complete drag, and all too many songs string you along with a few neat intros, but then drag you down in the conventional third-rate Oi! you're tired of hearing.

The music becomes much more interesting when the album delves deeper into Post-Punk on the B-side. The closer "L.V.F." has some neat Ska strokes while "Chômeur 80" bursts forward with blazing Hardcore energy. Unlike the French pirate vocals of Légion 88's Alain or Kontingent's Laurent, Robert has this intoxicated, off-key moan which ranges from tolerable to grating. "Segneur Barbare" is perhaps his best performance since he keeps it at a volume just above a whisper. The instrumentation helps, too.

Highlights: "Guerriers Païens," "Chômeur 80," "Paris," "Segneur Barbare," "Les Cosaques," "L.V.F"

If you like Ultime Assaut, then you'll love Above the Ruins. They have Ultime Assaut beat by a mile.

After leaving Death in June, Tony Wakeford formed a band called Above the Ruins which released "Songs of the Wolf", the band's sole full-length musical recording. The band enjoyed a brief existence promoted by the British National Party. Apart from his presence, the line-up of the band behind Songs of the Wolf was never revealed due to the band's open political deployment. Rumors about the identities of the members proliferated, but none of them were ever confirmed.

The record was first circulating on tape as a demo in 1984, but was then reprinted on vinyl in 1986, with "Storm Clouds Over Europe" missing and now presumably lost. No one has ever found and released the tape online. Considering its short length, you'd be forgiven if you thought of this as an EP or mini-LP.

Above the Ruin's music is within the vein of early Death in June, but the approach is much more straightforward, less clumsy and more akin to darkwave not unlike Joy Division, Warsaw or Killing Joke. Despite the production being very rough shod (keep in mind this was originally recorded as a demo) and Wakeford's clumsy performance (especially those nearly atonal vocals on "Under Western Skies"), the band manages to sound professional. The "kicking" songs like Waiting, the title-track and Progress are quite enjoyable even if a pinch awkward.

The lyrics are obviously committed, but have some good meaning even apart from the National Front propaganda: in fact this is the first attempt done by Wakeford to capture the esoteric and regal doctrine indirectly implied in his political choice of the time.

New Glory:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP8vraSTJSk

"Backlash" stands out as some of the best American Oi! ever put to record. A gruff melange of melodic riffs played at mid-tempo with shouted lyrics eschewing baldfaced bigotry in favor of American patriotism and white skinhead unity define these Philadelphia bootboys' sound. Too many highlights to choose from, but I'm particularly fond of "New Glory", "Red, White, and Blue", "Robin Hood" and "Backlash". The song "Loyal and Brave", which begins with echoed acoustics before upping the tempo to quicker paced Oi!, breaks the formula we're so used to on many skinhead Oi! records; the track concludes just as it preludes, but that's no mark against it.

While these guys were unapologetically white power, their music is executed with so much passion, conviction and good taste that this album must find its way in anyone's Punk collection, Nazi or not.

Skullhead, ever the thinking man’s Nazis (just don’t call them Nazis), belt out the closest RAC came to an anthem of interracial solidarity, via good old anti-capitalism. "Blame the Bosses" is pretty awkward and ironically enough it is this yearning to be ‘intelligent’ that leaves the band perhaps even more open to criticism than simply relying on crude sloganeering. In this age of post-fact politics many wouldn't bat an eye at the latter option. The line about how the reds are ‘worse than the bosses’ seems counter-productive in a song that makes criticizing the bosses its main focus, especially when said reds find something agreeable in the song’s anti-big business fervour and critique of the exploitation of cheap labor. That said, it's is one hell of a song with that dark, simplistic riffing enveloping you like Tyneside fog and Kev Turner’s Geordie terrier-like yap never failing to send a tingle up my spine.

As for Violent Storm, ‘Celtic Warrior’ is the same ancient warrior spirit attested to in black metal only expressed in brittle, manic punk rock. ‘Unemployed Voice’, meanwhile, keeps the punk rock but momentarily ditches the mysticism for something that musically and lyrically sounds like it could have been on one of the No Future ‘Country Fit For Heroes’ comps. Violent Storm were so into anti-capitalism, at one point they even accused Skrewdriver and Blood & Honour of holding on to capitalist tendencies. Above all, "Third Way" is evidence of a period – a short one at that – when UK RAC was actually a flourishing scene with an active political consciousness rather than just the flatulent Ian Stuart personality cult it has been since the ‘90s. The songs are ripping and it’s certainly interesting politically – this is a good one.

From the very start, far right groups had tried to make their way into the punk scene like the National Front and their (silly) Punk Front zine, but it wasn’t until the development of Oi! and its skinhead fan base that such organisations had a true force they could mobilise. The NF promoted neo-Nazi Oi! bands such as Skrewdriver and this spawned the Rock Against Communism (or RAC) movement in proper. The ‘British Justice’ EP actually predates any ‘political’ releases by Skrewdriver, making it one of the earliest known RAC records of all time. It must be the only thing ever that’s dedicated to both Adolf Hitler and Splodgenessabounds (alongside ‘all groupies’ and ‘Nigger & Chris’).

I think there's a part in all of us that wants to be massively ignorant and reactionary at times - and that's why this kind of stuff is so bloody appealing! I can relate to the lyrics too, my nice white daughter became a disco whore and repeatedly listening to this was part of the therapy I had to go through to cope with the grief. I'm nearly there.

But really this is more appealing in terms of the aesthetic (I use that word in every review now and the Ovaltinees would kick me in the bollocks if I uttered it in their presence) than in terms of the songwriting. At times it seems like they're putting the message before the music, but "Argentina" will make Sean Penn cry when he hears it and the thought of that... keeps me alive.

‘This Time the World’ is essentially hate with a beat. The principle of evil made musical. This is an 100% scuzz classic. RAC is something many people listen to out of morbid curiosity, and "This Time The World" has to be one of the ugliest albums ever cut to wax. The liner notes claim that leftist campaigners tried to have this banned - truth is I don't blame them! I wince listening to stuff like "Bloodsucker" and "Hate Your Face" - though the lyric about Rastas pushing drugs on kids is morbidly amusing. Gimme "Ganja Smuggling" by Eek-A-Mouse. How can rock ‘n’ roll be more fucked up? No Remorse may not be as hard as, say, Condemned 84 but they are twice as ugly. These songs are vicious, degenerate, violent and just downright nasty pieces of work. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth but you’ll be hard pressed to find hate rock that can match the imposing power of something like "Hail the Order."

Apart from the admittedly badass title track and the all-time favourite "Smash The Reds" many of these songs are probably too intimidating to approach again. But this album is just so horrifyingly, disturbingly evocative - read the lyrics to "Mother England". "Tree of Life", full of imagery depicting a virtuous and almost innocent 'Aryan' family (presumably after an apocalyptic race war) would be creepy... if it wasn't so poorly played. That track is the album's only real misstep, musically speaking.

This album is as memorable as they come, for the worst and best reasons. Has to be heard to be believed.

In case it wasn't screamingly obvious, Public Enemy is completely unrelated to the rap group of the same name, though I'd imagine both bands would find a few things to agree on. The first wave RAC band of the same name called it quits shortly after releasing their only studio album "England's Glory" in 1986. One year later, American Hip-Hop legends would drop "Yo! Bum Rush the Show," but rather than take it lying down, Paul Burnley hit the studios with a new line-up to record an album flipping the bird at the Long Island rappers.

The original band packed such a punch with their aggressive brand of Oi!, so hearing this downtempo lo-fi Hard Rock wasn't expected. Burnley's Public Enemy grew on me, for the music here is both exciting and disappointing. The drumming is seriously propulsive, giving that footstomping energy to the rhythm driven songs and intensity to the campy love ballads. The riffs sound like your standard fare Hard Rock, but the guitar tone has a distinct crunch due to the lo-fi production values.

The two flaws working against the listening experience is the rough shod production and unrehearsed musicianship. Tellingly, Burnley had stated in an interview the first album "There Is Only One Public Enemy" was practiced and recorded in exactly one week. For the sake of appealing to the romantically-inclined segment of his audience, Paul has these creepy racial love songs where he hits sour notes promising to save his English maiden from all that imperil their race and nation. They're contrived and chuckleworthy at best, more often than acceptable, they come across as grating and disingenuous.

Public Enemy would improve dramatically for the sophomore "Our Weapon Is Truth," where the production values are given a much-needed upgrade and the riffs hit hard. Burnley still couldn't avoid showering us with sappy love ballads, but at least they hit their mark for the heavier tracks.

If you've heard one album by Razors Edge you're heard them all. Hell, if you've heard one song by Razors Edge you've heard them all, but these ridiculous levels of repetitiveness doesn't stop their RAC ravings from being somewhat compelling. I'd say this album is so bad it's good, except it's actually just genuinely good! Covering "White Riot" was a rather clever choice, as the lyrics morbidly work in an RAC context, something Joe Strummer wouldn't be best pleased to hear (though, as a side point, it's weird to think he was still walking around when this was released). "Streets of Oldham" and the Mosley tribute "Blackshirts & Roses" would be the overall highlights, meanwhile the obligatory Ian Stuart cover in "Red Flags are Burning" wasn't particularly necessary. Particularly considering earlier on the album is a rip-off of said song called "Tearing Down the Flag", which really makes you wonder why they bothered... but then you can't really expect this to make sense. And that's why I like it.

Punk will never produce anything this hilarious ever again no thanks to the scene today. Who would've thought three bumfucks from St. Louis would've confused and offended the fuck out of the entire Punk scene?

I am Woman, hear me bitch
God, this kotex makes me itch
Men just don't seem to see
We gotta wipe it when we pee
We gotta douche when we fuck
To get rid of the goo and the muck
We're all liberal and on the pill
Don't have children, never will
We won't suck, we're all dykes
Hear us bitch about our rights
I'm a MAN, hear me ROAR
On your knees slut, on the floor

Stop your moaning and you bitching
You'll do better in the kitchen
Stop your tries at safe seduction
Our future lies in reproduction
Cunt!!
Burning bras just makes me crazy
You're only good for making babies

Now that we've got all these women
Who say they won't suck cock for a living
They want to work in the Real Mans world
I say we should fuck those girls!

You all talk about the ERA
You're only here for a real good lay
These feminist ladies that you follow
They don't suck, they don't swallow
Suck me!!
You'll never get your equal rights
Suck my cock you lousy dykes

Now that we've got all these women
Who say they won't suck cock for a living
They want to work in the Real Mans world
I say we should fuck those girls!

The ERA will never pass
You're nothing but a piece of ass
Stop listening to how those dykes sigh
Get on your back and spread your thighs
Bitch!!
The way you bitch just makes me sick
All you need is a good stiff dick

Now that we've got all these women
Who say they won't suck cock for a living
They want to work in the Real Mans world
I say we should fuck those girls!

Up the ass!!!!!
