Exodus, Kreator, Testament, ... all have good albums, but none of them ever had a groundbreaking album, or even a great albums that were both critically acclaimed, sold well or were fan favorites.

Also they lack some universal appeal originality/some gimmick sound that would have sold more concert tickets. That's pretty much the reason why.

You may argue that thisandthat band is great and thisandthat album is a masterpiece but, that's like your opinion, man and the numbers just don't back up the claim for being great.

Bonded By Blood was groundbreaking. Slayer admitted that it was opening for Exodus in 1983 that they decided to stop wearing make-up on stage and play full thrash metal. Their bootlegs were spread all over the world and you had bands like Kreator ripping them off when Exodus was still struggling to get their record out due to contractual bullshit.

Because you probably weren't alive back then to know that these were the 4 most well known thrash bands at the time. That doesn't necessarily mean they were the best at their craft. They were just the 4 bands that literally EVERY thrash metal fan knew about & owned albums by them.

I'd say, from my personal experience, that there was a big drop-off in popularity between these 4 bands and other thrash metal bands at the time.

I'd say Suicidal Tendencies & DRI were 5 & 6, if you want to count them as "thrash metal" and not whatever label they've been given now, but fans of the big 4 generally were fans of both ST & DRI as well. Then you had another big dropoff where bands like Exodus, Testament, Nuclear Assault & Billy Milano's meme-bands SOD & MOD were in the next tier of popularity.

But really, that's the only reason why they were considered the Big 4 of thrash metal, because of popularity and sales, that doesn't mean that they were the best or even most innovative thrash bands of their time. I'm sure if I went through all of my old cassette tapes of various thrash bands of that time, I would find some hidden gem that I didn't appreciate at the time because "muh Slayer rules" etc.

Also, Exodus is very overrated. Metallica may suck now, but RTL, MOP, and AJFA are untouchable. Also, shittalking Anthrax means you have shit taste.

Also, Overkill is the best fringe 4 thrash band, and the only one still making great thrash.

True, money and sales are terrible measure of a bands worth, but that's very related to why it's called "the big 4".
Pleb.sales.matter. Marketing matters. That's how you get ridiculous hyperbole like "big 4" attached to your name and get people to swarm your concerts even when you are 10 years past prime and singing about being a table. That's not to say the other bands weren't good or even better. And sometimes the terrible truth is that they just haven't made a album that sold enough at launch or was tight enough.
