It depends grunge isn't a thing so you'd have to name drop some bands I think most "grunge" bands in the day though were not butt rock since they delivered something new and fresh. Buttrock is essentially just really generic rock n roll have you ever just listened to a song and you already know where it's going or it's so boring you just go "meh" that's butt rock.

Over produced, overly commercialized harder rock music with a "we so badass" vibe. U2 and Oasis don't count. Closer to pussyrock.
Think of simplistic riffs played loudly over fairly basic and loud drum grooves (https://youtu.be/1bPHtCBqdLg & https://youtu.be/aVPSHhEJ8vA). Think of raspy vocals that's overcompensating for lack of power (https://youtu.be/u9Dg-g7t2l4?t=3m11s though not all cases of raspy vocals qualify. Nirvana and Pearl Jam are just a bit harsh but lack the epic douchey ego presence or the "we so badass" vibe that buttrock has. Grunge, if anything, comes off as more whiny). Think of bands featuring braindead vocalists from old punk groups that for some reason sound like the mouse from Barnyard nowadays (https://youtu.be/QcIN2a5UMCM?t=37s). Think of a vocalist's voice sounding like it is on the verge of breaking at any given moment, man so deep and emotional :'^( (https://youtu.be/fV4DiAyExN0?t=27s). Diction is also altered to evoke this and sound more epic and deep (https://youtu.be/1HUr9UKAxiY?t=37s). Sometimes a purely breathy tone is adopted (https://youtu.be/yz_j7nVCJJ0?t=18s). This is honestly hard. It's easy for me to label buttrock songs but not describe them.
Metal is not inherently buttrock though it is oftentimes buttcore. Half of what goes into buttrock is just the overly commercial aspect. A7X, Nickelback, Creed, Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Disturbed, just bands playing loud, juvenile compositions with that edge to their voice and attitude like they're "badass" and "deep" when it comes to ballads. Just think of how flavors and emotions shine best through music in subtleties, and buttrock takes everything that should be subtle and plays it loudly while not really saying much at all.

When I think about butt rock, nobody embodies it as good as Zakk Wylde. I'm not even talking about the music (there are probably better examples), but the persona.

In the 90's Butt Rock were the Hair Metal bands like Poison, Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Motley Crüe, etc because they were played in radio stations that used the tagline "Rock. Nothing but Rock." and obviously it was changed to "nothing butt rock" to make fun of it.

The rule of thumb is that if you can imagine Guy Fieri rocking out to it, it's buttrock.

I'm not convinced Twisted Sister was getting a lot of airplay in the 90s.
Pop rock that takes a lot of cues from grunge and hard rock, basically. If hair metal was just metal distilled down to its purest, most cynical, most marketable, essence, then buttrock was that for 90's bands like Soundgarden
>>71648127
Mainstream rock derived from grunge starting in the mid-late 90s. Stone Temple Pilots is proto-buttrock.
