Their technical ability, and ideas are all GOAT. Only one in the band who may not be a GOAT is Phil. But even Phils steady, tight playing makes him one of my favorite drummers to listen to.

bass, guitar and drums, I like Radiohead and would agree they're one of the most influential acts in modern music, but I wouldn't call their bass/guitar combo GOAT at all, considering other alternative bands like Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Kyuss, Cap n Jazz, Fugazi and Polvo exist.

As a pianist, vocalist, drummer, and sonwriter I believe technical ability is half the battle. Things such as tone, conceptualness, innate feeling, blend, and overall balance within a combo is what creates a unit/band. I think Radiohead does the latter things better than anybody, and because of how well they blend together (a chemistry I have never heard in any group before), I would have to nod my head to them as the greatest musicians I know.

I don't really think the bands I posted are technical at all, closest thing is probably Cap n Jazz and it is more fundamental than anything. I get what you're saying and I believe Greenwood is a great songwriter/guitar player, however I feel he does best when avoiding the whole rock bass/guitar combo thing.

I agree with what you are saying about Johnny but I don't understand how you could listen to a song like "Wierd Fishes" or "Bodysnatchers" or "Nude" and think he doesn't do as well in bass/guitar scenarios. Also he completely redefines what it means to play guitar, which is why it's even harder to compare his work to other contemporary guitarists.

As for the bands you mentioned, I think Fugazi, Kyuss, even Cap Jazz have fantastic lineups and arrangements for guitar/bass. But it's nothing new, doesn't redefine the wheel, and also if we are name dropping, I think none of those hold a torch to a group like Gang of Four in terms of how tight and ferocious the rhythm section is.

To be honest, I've been limited to late 80s-early 90s alternative rock when taking into consideration examples of better rock/bass combos. If I were to think of overall better rock guitar/bass combos, Primus (*tips*) and Duran Duran are acts hard to top.

Also, not much of a band's body of work, but the album Focus by Cynic is really underrated when it comes to Guitar/Bass combos. Then again, I'm a Sean Malone follower, so I might be biased.

Very true. I do like me some Thurston. I may like Lee Ronaldo more but it's hard to compare. Sonic Youth is just one of those groups that seems like they are always on the same page sonically
